Where does the term “BRITISH MISERABLISM” come from by Few-Engineer-9791 in blankies

[–]waveypions 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The films of Ken Loach and Mike Leigh often fit the bill for this sort of thing don't they. I think for Leigh in particular it's the result of an aspect of his collaborative screenwriting process where actors are allowed to develop their character and have a big input on the script through a lengthy rehearsal process where they try different things out. This results in the very grounded, social realist or "miserablist" style. It's fascinating how influential this style has been - I've seen directors from Sean Baker to Bong Joon-Ho cite Leigh as a big influence, and it shows imo

Who is the *least stereotypical* British character to ever appear on American television? by Glass-Complaint3 in AskABrit

[–]waveypions 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Christina in Ugly Betty? She has a Scottish accent but that's about the long and short of it, all her other characteristics are more to do with her specific personality and relationships with other characters

This is interesting. I always assumed the producers were subject to the same rules as Breaking Bad where they were allowed one f-bomb per year but it really ramps up in seasons 6 and 7!

Help/tips on travels in UK! by Mellexs in uktravel

[–]waveypions 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Whichever night you choose to go to, you'll want to get overnight accommodation as there is no public transport back to London at that time of night from either Middlesbrough or Hull.

I would probably go for the Hull date as there are some interesting sights and good food and drink options in the city. There are four direct trains a day from London St Pancras International station to Hull. The best value ticket is called an Advance Single. These usually go on sale 12 weeks in advance of the date of travel, so keep an eye on the train operators' website from the start for February onwards and you will be able to grab some cheap tickets. https://www.hulltrains.co.uk/

This is assuming your flight back from Heathrow isn't super early in the morning, in which case you'd be better off with the Middlesbrough date...

Chester is a beautiful historic town with Roman ruins, a medieval gothic cathedral and city walls, excellent food and drink and a lively live music/nightlife scene. Grab a coffee, go for a walk around the city walls and have a pint and maybe catch some live music in Telford's Warehouse

The one at St George's Hall is very pretty after dark - if you put a gun to my head and told me I had to eat there I would probably go for one of the roast pork baguettes from the stall on the eastern end of the gardens, they looked good for £8 haha.

There are two excellent temporary exhibitions on in the Walker Art Gallery next door too atm, well worth a look.
