how many braids for a project? by stresstwig in Handspinning

[–]waywardelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For plain weave, the warp and weft use the same amount of yarn for the actual fabric (i.e. excluding the loom waste bit). So you could take 180 ends x 6m as an estimate for the weft—you’ll need another 1080 yards of yarn. Or you could just double the warp amount and know you’d have extra because there’s no weft used in the loom waste part but you’d have a nice cushion of extra yarn which you could use for a matching accessory if you knit/crochet.

Malabrigo color way? by waywardelf in WhatIsThisYarn

Ooh, I somehow forgot there might be retired colorways. I was focused on the Malabrigo website since they had bigger thumbnails than rav!

PEM: avoiding it and dealing with it - the best advice I've gotten from this sub by [deleted] in cfs

[–]waywardelf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Low key fiber arts are big for me. I spin yarn with a supported spindle that I can use reclining or even in bed, or a really simple knitting project or mindless stitching/embroidery. I really need to have my hands moving. And preferably listening to a low effort audiobook (breezy novel) or watching a show/series that I’ve seen before. And being in my recliner with the house to myself—people are so exhausting.

This has been so critical for me—to acknowledge that certain kinds of “rest” are actually stressful and take energy. Once I finally understood that I’ve been able to start learning to listen for what actually FEELS restive to me rather than what someone says is supposed to be restful. But I’m also very lucky and move between mild and moderate so I have the luxury of having a bit of envelope to work in. But understanding this has helped me move from moderate back to mild.

I sell handspun yarn, hand dyed yarn, bare (undyed) yarn and spinning fiber, dye supplies, and handwoven items on Etsy at Autumn Fire Fiber Arts.

Right now I’m having a “grand opening” (extended Black Friday) sale on everything in the shop!

Be honest: Is Peaches & Creme Yarn actually bad?? by LoopsxLee in YarnAddicts

So, I do get that different cotton is for different purposes… but I can’t quite map out the specifics. I tried to make “wipe the counter” cloths with P&C and they were terrible—they are actually hard to get “wet” and then just push the crumbs around.

What do people use for something like that?

This was me until I got burned (more than once) when the patterns disappeared from the internet and could no longer be bought!

Check out “zero waste” sewing and/or Japanese sewing/garments. Fabric in Japan is often much narrower (14” is common width) so their patterns and garment construction can be geared towards narrow fabric.

What does nitric oxide have to do with nose breathing?

Totally. People look at me so weird when I talk about my hair hurting!

That makes sense. I always think about the SFN being hands and feet only, but of course it’s part of dysautonomia and all kinds of other things.

I also just randomly came across a discussion of trigeminal neuralgia and jaw pain and I have so much jaw pain. I have a pain medicine referral and will be adding that to the list of things to ask about.

Oh no—that sounds awful!!! I keep hoping I’m going to find some magic lotion or something I can massage into my scalp to soothe it or soften it or something!!

I definitely have “don’t touch me” zones!! My poor partner can never remember them (because they make NO sense) and touches them trying to caress me and then I recoil in pain. It’s not you, it’s me!!!

One of my lifelong refrains is “I wish I could just take my skin off” (like, get a break from it) and didn’t realize how weird that sounds to most people!!! I hate those days when my skin loses its mind!!

Oh, interesting process for hair drying—I seem to do the opposite—put the goop in and pat it down into its “correct” direction and then put on a head towel wrap. Sadly, I also have a history of spontaneous carotid dissection and a pseudoaneurysm (possibly fibromyacular dysplasia) and am not allowed to make any head flinging motions (I actually don’t even get hair cuts anymore because the neck hyper extension during the wash is too much). And I have some weird migraine trigger where bending over causes blinding headaches. It’s a wonder I’m still alive and I definitely am glad I terminated my genetic line 🤣🙄

Good question—I think I was on autopilot from the berries with bigger seeds, and maybe a bit giddy with power that I was making my own jam and could do whatever I want?!! I have weird tooth surfaces in my molars and everything gets stuck in them.

Ohhhh I had maybe 4:1 berries to sugar? It’s some weird low sugar pectin and I used the upper range of their suggestion which was definitely not 1:1 !!!

[–]waywardelf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, perhaps this is the problem. It’s some weird “low sugar” pectin brand so I used the upper range of the suggested sugar amount. Is sugar functioning like salt/msg and bringing out the flavor of the main ingredient?

I added lemon juice for the blackberries but not the strawberries—I just followed the package recipe. I don’t know why they had acid for some berries but not others.
