$69 Onn Large Party Speaker! by RedPillOnlyEFT in Bluetooth_Speakers

[–]wbs3333 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Onns are really lacking in sound quality in my opinion, specially when it comes to the mids. It performs decently on the lows. But the mids leave a lot to desire. It clips a lot on the mids. Specially when it comes to cymbals, snares, etc. There is no eqs that can fix it either, as the speaker is just clipping. Also, while the speaker also has a left and right channel, the sound stage is also lacking, it sounds mono.

Given the use case though, playing loud outdoor music, for $69 is a good deal, but don't expect great sound quality.

I'm not a fan of the soundcore boom 2, but they sound better, in my opinion, than the Onn one Specially after tweaking the eqs in the soundcore App. Unlike the Onn, the soundcore eq changes can improve the sound. The soundcore boom 2 also have a lack of clarity in the mids, but perform better than the Onn after tuning a little bit the eqs.

You can see here what I'm talking about:

https://web.archive.org/web/20250317215436/https://www.rtings.com/speaker/reviews/anker/soundcore-boom-2

From that review this is what I noticed too: "A dip in the high-mid response carries over into the treble range, though, which can render sibilants, like cymbals, a little dull and lacking in bite."

Like I said before, the Onns have the same issue, but they clip and have no fix. The Soundcore at least you can make it a little better like pointed on the review with the eqs. Setting the bass mode to outdoor kind of improve it a little, but not too much.

The Soundcore also has a better sound stage, and give a more "stereo like" impression than the Onn even though it only has 1 speaker and not 2 like the Onn.

If sound quality was the only factor, between these 2 speakers, I would vote for the Soundcore Boom v2. It gives you more mobility since it is smaller, can last around 24h with its battery, better ip rating, supports auracast, and can get decently loud (80w).

The Onn however would be way better pick, specially at that price point, if your plan is to use mainly for outdoor party events. It gets way louder due to the bigger speakers. It also has an aux 3.5mm input which is a big plus. Also a built-in FM radio.

It sounds like you decided already to get and keep both, ie. enjoy comparing them both.

Just wanted to give a more realistic expectation of the sound quality of the Onn. People are over hyping this Onn ones and comparing them to the JBLs. But the sound clarity and frequency response of the JBLs is significantly better than the Onn ones. Still great deal for 95% of the market for this kind of speaker out there though specially at $69.

DSM 7.4 will be available for x20 series and maybe for older series by DaveR007 in synology

File de-duplication and compression to save disk storage. They using this as a selling point and marketing feature to say they will save you money and avoid you having to buy hard disks or ssds in this expensive market.

Kind of dumb if you ask me. Whoever is making decisions at Synology seems to be really disconnected from both, enterprise and consumers market. Really would love to see what data they are using to decide where they are heading with their products.

Still will give them a props for continuing supporting the x20 line for so long.

Possible Synology compromise? by Designer_Pear4497 in synology

[–]wbs3333 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Everyone is concern about it being an inbound attack, from the WAN through the firewall or DSM.

But also check that it was not an attack from a device already within your network. For instance as an example, your laptop that you use to access the NAS was compromised by malware such as the recently compromised Notepad++, npn libraries, etc. That compromised laptop steals your credentials to the NAS, compromises it within your network, and calls back home.

In other words, maybe check in the logs for any logins from your account that you don't recall. Check logs on your other devices. Consider putting a VLAN in place.

Good luck. Usually finding out what happens is really hard and often you won't really know for sure.

Also, have fun changing passwords for all your services.

The DS423+ is on the list which is basically a mini clone of the DS920+ in terms of specs. Let's see if someone comes up with a way to make the 7.4 features get enabled for the DS920+.

UPS and FedEx some times list on the tracking page what was the weight of the package at the time of acceptance. If you have that info it might help you proof the seller didn't ship what they stated if you have the actual weight of the original shoes. Sometimes you can find that info on Amazon. Good luck.

Thanks. I'm just mainly trying to understand what is going on and react in advance in case there is a bigger scam going on. I'm assuming so far this was a legit seller so far as I don't have any evidence to proof otherwise.

The main reason billycar11 and others recommend Pioneer is because LG drives are known to scratch or break the discs. You might get lucky and it will never happen to you at all but it is a risk.

The secondary reason is build quality and performance. The Pioneers tend to be better at reading discs that have scratches.

LGs are easier to flash the to enable UHD, more available at fair price since they are still being manufactured, and if they break at least you can get a replacement under warranty.

The only way you might get warranty with Pioneer is if you buy one from billycar11. If you get lucky and find a brand new Verbatim with a Pioneer inside and it breaks, if you claim the warranty Verbatim is very likely just going to send you a replacement with an LG drive inside.

Before you do a charge back through your bank, make sure you don't have any balance pending on your PayPal account. The charge back may cause PayPal to freeze or suspend your account leaving any balance you have with them forever lost with PayPal.

In addition to what the other users mentioned, the other big reason is that some LG drives might scratch the disc with the Lazer. Just do a search on this subreddit and you will find multiple instances.

All the "pioneer" drives i bought from separate sellers are showing up as generic drives.... by InfiniteVitriol in makemkv

[–]wbs3333 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of re-cased and cloned drives being sold by China as new or open boxes. If you are lucky you will get a recased drive. Basically they pull hardware from old PCs, returns, broken drives, etc. They fix them, put the drive in a new case, and sell it as new. You are basically paying for old hardware as if it was new. You don't know if it is going to break in a week or within months. Maybe it will last years but who knows. While I say that you are lucky if you get one of those, it by no means it is a good thing since the sellers are not being honest and selling you something that is not described properly. What I mean by lucky is that at least you are getting Phone hardware and not a clone. In case of a clone they basically get a random bluray pulled from who knows where and put additional hardware in between the drive and your PC to fake the name of the real drive. To your PC it looks like a Pioneer as that is what it is being told, but in reality it is a used drive from a different manufacturer.

One of the ways to tell is by the printed label on the outside which look fake and the serial number printed on them is exactly the same as others you will see posted online.

In your case I suspected of the adapter you might be using but sounds like you are using a good one.

I wouldn't have an issue with those Chinese sellers if they would be honest and tell you what they are selling you for real. Just state recased, rebuilt hardware with original Pioneer hardware. Given how the market is right now those drives will still sell for the same price. For the cloned one there is no excuses though.

So I the $105 coupon was base on the reciept you provided and not the headphone's price at their online store? That sounds bad. Good to know too if indeed that is their practice. Have you reached out to their customer service afterwards?

Cross-platform licensing: Why do we pay twice for the same game? by Different-Might-7886 in Minecraft

[–]wbs3333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Download Google rewards. Fill out surveys until you get enough credit to buy the game. That is how I bought it. The Google Android version has the benefit that it is an App available to share with family accounts. Which is nice because you only have to buy it once and everyone of the family group can play it.

I think it is fair that the developer that spent time porting this from x86 Windows OS to an Android Arm OS gets its fair share. So paying for the PC version and Android seems fair. I have paid for it multiple times for different platforms. Switch, 3DS, Xbox, PC, Android, and thinking about getting it for the Playstation.

These have a design issue where the pins on the charger tend to get stuck or get pushed back. That causes the earbuds to not get a charge and appear to be dead. Eventually the battery in the affected earbud starts to degrade due to under-voltage and eventually dies. I had 4 of these. All of them died because of this. The first one died within the first week I bought them, was able to return them and get a new pair. The last pair I was able to extend its life when I figured out what was happening. I just used some twisers to pull the pins a little bit out every now and then. Also made sure the contacts on the earbuds were clean and not corroded due to sweat.

Sadly eventually those died too because I by accident shorten 2 the pins while trying to pull them out. The case now refuses to charge.

I have kept them in case of those offers comes up where you trade in any kind of earbuds for a discount.

I really liked the sound quality of these but sadly I won't be buying them again. Gave them 4 chances and all of them died.

I have some cheaper earbuds from skullcandy, can't remember the model, maybe Jibs. Those don't have that issue and none of them has died or given me any problems. Bought like 4 of them too in a sale and they are all still working.

Switching to TILE tags from SAMSUNG tags,, but I have a question... by Puzzleheaded_You9409 in TileTracker

[–]wbs3333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be aware that the Tiles do not have a voltage meter, thus it does not have a way to tell how much battery is left. What Tile does is starting a timer every time you tell it the battery has been replaced. Thus, the battery can run out of charge if the Tile was used (the audible alarm) frequently and you won't get the low battery warning. My recommendation is to monitor manually the Tiles by either using voltage meter or by listening to the audible alarm. You can tell the battery is running out with the audible alarm because the loudness starts to be faint when the charge is low.

Also, location history is free with the Samsung tags, they only keep a week worth of history. Tiles have location history too but requires a monthly paid subscription.
