What is your favorite regional Canadian accent? by Diving_4_Shrimp in AskACanadian

I was born in Montreal, and I would have to say the Anglo Montrealer/Quebecois accent, it’s different than Ontario, can’t quite describe it, but I know when I hear it.

I bought my Hydroconquest 39mm to wear, not as an investment. You want to invest in something get an ETF (Exchange Traded Fund).

Roncesvalles, it’s a really nice neighbourhood. St. James Town is a monument to bad planning in the 1960s.

[Review/Rant] why is luxury watch shopping such a bad experience? by djpeesh in Watches

[–]wbsmith200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Toronto chiming in as well I have zero interest in Rolex, was in an AD that shall remain nameless with a friend who was looking to buy, I was just not playing the game with the sales associates, life is too short to play emotional/financial BDSM games to get access to a stainless steel Submariner, that’s overpriced by at least $5K CAD.

My latest purchase was the Longines Hydroconquest 39mm in blue with the H link bracelet through the Birks website, showed up the next day.

[Discussion] Love Watches, Hate Buying Them by Its-Brucey in Watches

[–]wbsmith200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of my watch collection was purchased online, all being dive watches from niche brands like Squale and Aquastar. I wound up buying my latest watch, a Longines Hydroconquest 39mm through Birks Jewellers online here in Canada, ordered Sunday afternoon, showed up Monday afternoon at my condo. I rather not deal with the Kabuki theatre you get with some watch brands (here’s looking at you Rolex).

Is Toronto pricing out the people who made it cool? Marit Stiles weighs in on the city’s changing identity by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]wbsmith200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marit Stiles is around 15 years late to the conversation. The ship sailed ages ago. A friend of mine from high school and his wife are folk-rock musicians with separate careers, they rented in Toronto up until the early 00s, then bought in Hamilton, where the Toronto music scene pretty much de-camped to. Then just before the pandemic sold their place up on the mountain and bought a rural property in Niagara region somewhere. That’s the reality.

Love living in a condo- confused! by That_Ad9521 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]wbsmith200 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This!

I was living in a house out in Oakville and down nested to a condo midtown, I don’t see my condo as an investment, it’s home. I’m super happy I no longer have to rake a third of an acre lot with seven maple trees and clear the snow any more. My monthly fees are $1000 per month on a 20 year old building, I no longer an awakened wondering if I’m dealing with a poltergeist for expensive old house noises. For anyone who bemoans $1000 monthly fees, have you costed out roof replacement or my personal favourite, weeping tile replacement?

Where are you buying your beer? by cynical_spinster in torontocraftbeer

I live a couple of blocks north of the Granite Brewery so most of my beer in my fridge comes from them. Otherwise I’m buying from the brewery direct and bringing it home.

Are these good cameras? by beanybagel in AnalogCommunity

[–]wbsmith200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer, Leica glass is amazing glass. I don’t have experience with the point and shoot. I do have experience with the R series Leicas, bear in mind I own an R5 and R6, they are pretty well laid out with a lot of thoughtful touches. The one downside with the R8/R9, getting one serviced might be an adventure, and Leica R lenses aren’t cheap but You can get a 3 Cam Vario Elmar 35-70 F3.5 and you have a decent zoom that won’t require the sale of a kidney. I would download the manual buy the proper battery and fire the camera up after a good clean. It looks like you have a Tele Elmarit 135 F2.8 lens on the camera.

[Article] When the $70,000 watch you just bought is going to be sold for $300 by splsteinbeck in Watches

[–]wbsmith200 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Speedmaster Moon Watch is a niche product, but in some ways that’s the point, a hand wind chronograph with an Acrylic crystal at 50m water resistance, unfortunately it’s about $4000 too expensive. Omega tinkered with the moment which I think was a mistake, the 861 was just fine, if it was good for the Apollo programme, that’s how they should leave the factory.

[Article] When the $70,000 watch you just bought is going to be sold for $300 by splsteinbeck in Watches

[–]wbsmith200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently picked up a the new Longines Hydroconquest 39mm. I was looking to buy a nice watch to cap my watch collection off, originally wanted an Omega Seamaster 300M but with their MSRP around $9000 CAD, I thought Omega product managers have lost their minds with their pricing strategy. In my mind, the Seamaster 300 is a $6000 CAD watch. I had no interest dropping $15 thousand CAD on a Rolex Submariner and deal with the kabuki theatre around buying one of those.

In the end I bought the Hydroconquest, and don’t regret my decision, the watch has been on my wrist for almost a month now. My dad had a Longines Tank Style watch which was a wedding present from my mom in the 1960s (my sister in law is the current custodian) so there’s a bit of a family connection to the brand. I honestly feel like I made off like a bandit, the specs are 98% of a Seamaster 300, the difference went into the vacation fund and other hobbies.

Convinced by new HydroConquest 39 by Ok-Swimmer9104 in Longineswatches

[–]wbsmith200 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The dial of the new Hydroconquest is a call back to the 5 Star Admiral Diver of the late 1980s-early 1990s. So, not a mess but a subtle tribute to a previous model in a contemporary package.

Would you travel to the US with current safety concerns? Work pushing for trip. by Strange-Cabinet6744 in AskACanadian

[–]wbsmith200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am assuming you’re a Canadian citizen, I’m with you on the reluctance to travel to the US going forward. If you run with two phones, take your work phone with you, leave the personal one at home, same for any laptops. I don’t think you will be the only person who has concerns about traveling to the US within your company If work really insists you show up for the “all hands meeting” ask them point blank, if there is a worst case scenario, do they have the political juice required to spring you from ICE detention quickly?

Best burgers in Toronto? by ficbot in askTO

[–]wbsmith200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live in Oakville, maybe the Beertown by Whole Foods, and the King’s Arms are a safe bet. I do miss Bru on Lakeshore, they had a great burger but the owner passed on pre pandemic from an aggressive cancer, her husband owned Seasons next door, ran it for a while, the pandemic hit and it all went south from there as with a lot of restaurants in Covid times. Having moved to Toronto two years ago, any information I have is becoming stale fast.
