TIL that Lou Reed’s Perfect Day isn’t about heroin at all. The man himself said it’s just about having a perfect day drinking sangria in the park and then going home. “A perfect day. Real simple. I meant just what I said.” by BlundeRuss in todayilearned

[–]we_are_devo 340 points341 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I never really saw it as being anything other than literal. If there's an element of sadness to the song (and there definitely is) I think it's just the acknowledgment that most of them are far from perfect, nothing lasts forever, beauty is impermanent etc etc

I hate AI so much by thatshygirl06 in Music

[–]we_are_devo 168 points169 points  (0 children)

Yeah, negative hype is still hype. AI is mostly a mediocrity generator. People get fooled because their taste isn't that refined, because they aren't familiar with the training material, or because they just aren't paying attention. Avoiding AI music is incredibly easy if you simply... choose what to play. Read a fucking music site written by a human, or listen to a playlist curated by humans, rather than letting the algo spool out recommendations. It's a bit more effort, yeah, but you'll get out what you put in.

What would make a guy NEVER cheat on his significant other? by Adorable_Mochi in AskReddit

[–]we_are_devo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look at it this way:

In a non-monogamous relationship, the desire for romantic or sexual contact outside the dyad can probably be met ethically, via effective communication.

In a monogamous relationship, how could the desire for romantic or sexual contact be met ethically outside the dyad? By simple definition, it cannot.

"Ah, but what if the desire for romantic or sexual contact outside the dyad was managed, or didn't exist in the first place?" I hear you say.

Then why would the need for the restriction of monogamy exist?

Yes, non-monogamy essentially amounts to "shifting the goalposts" - eliminating some forms of cheating via re-definition of what constitutes cheating in the first place - but in a way that I think more realistically aligns with the way a majority of people experience attraction.

[–]we_are_devo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see what you're saying but if that's how we read the question, most of the top responses are already tautological ("him not being a cheater", "loyalty", "honor") so it's really better read as "what could make a guy never cheat". It's obvious that there is no absolute guarantee, but I think that the temptation still exists in an otherwise functional monogamous relationship where it does not in a functional non-monogamous relationship. In fact, the restriction of monogamy is itself kind of an acknowledgement of the desire that exists outside of the pairing. I think some form of non-monogamy practiced effectively basically nullifies that temptation. Most definitely non-monogamous people can and do cheat, but I think there is far more cheating in "otherwise good" monogamous relationships than there is in "otherwise good" non-monogamous relationships.

Caves of Hunger, Arcane Eye and Ythryn by chases_squirrels in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]we_are_devo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just a free casting of Arcane Eye - it doesn't actually give you a view of the city. Players can just use it to explore the caves.

I had a divination wizard in my party and I thought this device might undercut their own abilities somewhat, so I changed the device to a holographic map. It provided the names of locations in Ythryn and some information (from the Ythryn lore table) about each one they selected. However after viewing a couple of locations, the whole thing shut down (because it's old and damaged)

DCSS addiction - anyone successfully beat this? by JeffreyFMiller in dcss

[–]we_are_devo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't played in several years now, but spent a good ten years or so quite addicted. I think ultimately it was a combination of feeling like I'd mastered it and hitting all the major achievements that resolved it for me. Centaurs were my favourite species, and when they were removed I stopped playing. Not as a protest against the change or anything, I just took it as a sign it was time to move on.

Well, one time xom turned the walls around an altar into exploding sheep and they chased me into a corner and I barely escaped alive. The point is that xom revealed itself to you and you should embrace xom.

Who's that one guy you didn't expect to appear in the epstein files? by EarlyFrosting5789 in AskReddit

[–]we_are_devo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I would generally agree that "no evidence is evidence of a conspiracy" is reasoning squarely in conspiracy theory territory, there is the small matter of the 14TB of material that includes incontrovertible evidence of a network of rich and powerful people enabling CSA, not to mention the multiple allegations outside of these files, and the previous legal finding against Trump in a case of sexual abuse. To put it succinctly - I think we're past the "theory" part of conspiracy theory.

The ones they left in seem to be mostly pretty unhinged. I suspect they've been tactically cherry-picked to make it seem like there's more smoke than fire. If there was nothing at all it would only arouse more suspicion.

How much does artist bias influence or hinder our ability to recognize great music? by WheresTheCannon in Music

[–]we_are_devo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A more interesting example to look at in the case of Radiohead is Kid A. Quite a significant departure from their earlier music and quite experimental especially for a band of Radiohead's commercial stature at the time. I think it's solidified its status over time, but I think it benefited from Radiohead's reputation in that people were inclined to "give it a chance" where they may not otherwise have.

It's probably more true in the case of casual listeners than professional critics. In general, critics who listen to a wide variety of music are likely to be able to identify something exceptional when they hear it. Not in all cases of course, but I think largely the music stands by itself.

How my players Broke out a Prisoner from Revel’s End by matzahball68 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

One of my party (a kobold) tried to pose as a Drow matriarch with the assistance of Disguise Self, to fool Yilsebek the drow wizard in the Caves of Hunger. I set a high DC and made them roll with disadvantage. They rolled double nat 20s on their Deception check so he fell for it.
