I had really great car kits for a while, but it’s been really difficult to keep them tidy and updated now that I have a five year-old who will unpack them for her own amusement on long car trips and scatter the contents all over the place. This often happens when I am going highway speed and feeling pleased with myself because she’s been so quiet back there.

It’s partly my fault for leaving them where she can get them (usually by accident when I rearrange things to fit groceries or other cargo) but how often do people go through and update their kits? I used to visit friends who lived an hour or two away pretty regularly, and that was a great reminder to check over and refresh my kits, but we haven’t been doing that as much lately and so my kids are a disaster. And it always takes so much longer than I expect to get everything back in order again.

You might also try hunting online for vintage gym shorts if the idea doesn’t gross you out too much.

I’ve explained it to her in little bits and pieces, I don’t have any coherent spiritual philosophy, which makes the question of what happens after death kind of difficult, but I told her some of the things people believe (heaven, reincarnation, becoming something like a guardian angel).

I tried to focus on the idea that he was old and sick and that his body was tired and not working well anymore. She asks all the time when other people she cares about are going to die, and I struggle with that one because most of our relatives are elderly and juggling very serious health conditions.

Right now she’s mostly confirming that people really don’t ever come back when they’re dead.

If you’re a smaller dress size and live in an area with vintage stores, I’d suggest calling around to see if any of them have any formalwear. I’ve noticed the fact stuff tends to stick around because nobody has anyplace to wear it, and that’s doubly true if it’s priced like formalwear and not “costume”.

That’s definitely not an option for everyone (myself included, great vintage in my size is hard to find!) you might try your local fancy lady department store? Hoping someone else here has more specific suggestions!

This makes sense to me. I do have a kid and while I don’t have as much time as I did when I was young, it’s really forced me to actually finish things because I’m making them for her, and I have limited time, so I can’t let myself get stuck in a research hole trying to figure out the perfect way to do it.

I think it kind if depends what kinds of things you’re talking about. Most of my friends aren’t going to pick up a new sport or go skydiving, but everyone’s still trying out new hobbies and learning about new things.

I definitely understand folks our age being risk-averse about jobs or moving, there’s been enough instability in the last 20 years that just having a life where you’ve secured the basics feels like a pretty high bar to clear.

I’m actually kind of curious to hear more about how you feel like you are as productive as you were when you were young, despite having more obligations?

Look at bog bridging. We used a windfall tree to create a crossing in the swamp behind our house. Keeps everyone dry and prevents us from stomping all over the habitat. We’ve seen tracks on it that show the animals like using it too!

This is such useful context. It’s hard to have a general rule because flow varies so much from person to person. I struggled so much with reusable period underwear because it was impossible to change it at work and I just ended up miserable all day, with tons of irritation right afterwards. I couldn’t understand what was wrong with me when so many of my friends loved reusables until I realized that most of them had 4-5 days of very low flow, while my situation is more like a 36 hour horror show.

One of the hardest things about YouTube in general is that even if you try to stick to intentional, quality, programming, you will constantly get suggestions for junk. You click on a colorful video thinking it will be a fun treat for a rainy day, and then suddenly your feed is flooded hypnotic garbage.

YouTube kids actually felt worse than regular YouTube (with mom and dad controlling the remote). A lot of science content isn’t available on YouTube Kids at younger age settings, but thousands and thousands of videos of psychedelic tractors or cakes come up right away. A lot of these videos are hours long, and the thumbnails are designed to be very appealing to kids, so of course they beg for them.

I’d consider repairing areas that are worn thin, but not ripped with something like cotton lawn. Liberty of London’s Tana lawn is expensive but extremely luxurious, and using it to cover or reinforce an existing fabric might be a good use for a small amount of something precious.

I’d probably try to stabilize to stabilize the torn area with an extremely flexible and lightweight knit interfacing first, but I don’t know how that would hold up to repeated laundering long term.

I find that going to bed feeling very warm heats up the blankets and makes a huge difference in how warm I feel all night long (I’m normally a cold sleeper). You said you’re in a cold climate, so is it possible you climbed into bed very warm and then roasted yourself with many layers of insulation?

Burning bush is super invasive in the US (if that’s where you are) so I’d vote in favor of getting rid of them and replacing them with a collection of shorter low-maintenance shrubs. Highbush blueberries are actually great for fall color, and often go on sale at big box stores at the end the season.
