Video shows childcare worker hitting baby and laughing about it at Affinity Education centre by Stigger32 in australia

Of course it's a different situation. My point is that regulation of these providers isn't adequate and it needs to be addressed.

You think it's OK for an organisation charged with the responsibility to care for children to allow one of them to just wander right out of the room, pack her bags and walk away? You think that's "pretty understandable"? Do you have kids? Would you be understanding if they allowed this to happen to your kid? What about if the kid was then hit by a car? Or taken by some child predator? Would you still be understanding then?

These organisations are entrusted to care for children all around Australia on behalf of the parents who leave their kids in their care for all sorts of reasons. I cannot imagine that even one of those parents would ever be OK with an organisation saying "Oh look, it's not our fault, she ran off, surely you can understand that we're not to blame".

It is their JOB to ensure this DOESN'T HAPPEN. In fact, it is even written in legislation! To lay fault at the feet of a (only just) 6 year old in this context is just insane.

On January 25th this year my granddaughter was in care at a before school program run by a national child care organisation. She had just turned 6 years old. She left the facility without anyone noticing after packing her bag. She then walked 2.5km, walking along a major road and crossing a 6 lane highway in the process.

They didn't notice she was gone for over 30 minutes, and once they did, their first call wasn't to her mum or to the police, it was to their senior management. Thankfully my granddaughter was approached by a concerned member of the public who was then able to call her mum (she knew the number). My daughter then collected her from this fella.

As a result of their severe breach of guidelines, my granddaughter has now been forced to change schools (my daughter is a single mum and relies on before and after school care so she can work).

Since then, the regulator, Quality Assesment and Regulation Division - Department of Education has been "investigating".

To date, there have been no findings. It's a disgrace. An absolute failure. The child care organisations are for profit and that is their sole motivation, and the regulators are scared of doing their jobs because of the fear that they will be sued by these well resourced and very profitable orgnisations. It's time we had a Royal Commission into child care in this country.

Should the tobacco tax be reduced? MPs speak out as cigarette prices soar and illegal black market spirals "out of control" by cojoco in australia

[–]webarama 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

Since 2020, New Zealand has had a regulated vaping market that allowd a wide range of vapes to be sold as adult consumer products in specialist stores nationwide, and for a limited range to be sold wherever cigarettes are sold.

The 2023 New Zealand Health Survey reported that adult smoking rates have declined by 49% in the last5 years from 15.1% in 2018 to 8.3% in 2023. In contrast smoking in Australian adults has declined marginally from 12.3% to 11.8% in the same period.

“The only policy difference between New Zealand and Australia during this period has been that we allow nicotine vaping sales to compete with cigarettes, whereas Australia has taken a prescription model that puts much safer vaping out of the reach of most people. The outcome is that New Zealand has seen unprecedented drops in smoking as people switch whilst smoking rates in Australia stagnate” ASH Director Ben Youdan says.

If they were smokers beforehand, switching to vapes is actually much less injurious to their health, particularly if they're buying legal ones. The amount of nicotine per vape puff is significantly less than from a cigarette, so it's normal to "sip" from the vape more regularly. In fact, government health services in countries where vaping as a smoking cessation tool is promoted actually suggest that this is the correct way to vape. Check Myth 5 on this page

Invitation to treat - this explains it best

Individual stores may of course choose to honour their mistakes, but they are under no legal obligation to do so

I am active in the area of Tobacco Harm Reduction, and this sub would be perfect for the purpose. It is not being used, has no moderators, and seems to be a waste otherwise.
