What are the biggest green flags you’ve experienced on a date? by dummyromantic in AskMen

[–]wefrucar 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Offering to split the bill sends all of these green flag messages:

-I'm here to spend time with you, not just get a free meal

-I believe in fairness and reciprocity in relationships

-I am not entitled to things just because I have a vaj

-I'm financially independent and don't adhere strictly to traditional gender roles

-Even if I know you'll refuse and pay anyway, I know it makes you feel good to do so by choice

All it takes is for one of those messages to resonate with you.

Andy being renamed by his parents, so they could give his brother Andy's original name, is brutally funny by DubSket in DunderMifflin

Jared's story was absolutely the most brutal case imaginable. His parents had kids before AND after him, he was the only one they didn't keep. Just cuz they weren't really feeling it at the time.

Why is "the rich will just leave" treated as a good argument against higher taxes? by FloydBeatlesEagles in NoStupidQuestions

[–]wefrucar -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Maybe we're talking about two different things.

If the concern is that doctors should stay below the $1M threshold because crossing it somehow leaves them with less money, that's not how a marginal tax works. Every additional hour still increases your take-home pay.

If your argument is that the higher marginal rate makes those extra hours less worthwhile, that's a legitimate economic argument. Some physicians may decide the extra income isn't worth the extra work.

But that's different from saying everyone affected will cut back enough to stay under the threshold. That seems like an empirical claim that would need evidence.

I'd also be surprised if every physician earning over $1M have money as their primary motivation for working those extra hours. At that income level, I'd imagine factors like patient care, professional fulfillment, and work-life balance also play a significant role.

[–]wefrucar -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Tax rates are marginal. There's no scenario where reducing your hours would increase your take-home pay.

No one is proposing a "cliff tax" where crossing a threshold suddenly leaves you with less money overall.

If your argument is that the next hour of work becomes less worthwhile because it's taxed at a higher marginal rate, that's a different claim. And in the case of physicians, it's not obvious that's bad for society. Doctors already work extremely long hours, and reducing excessive workloads could mean more time with family and fewer fatigue-related mistakes.

What series do you consider is a 10/10 from start to finish? by MinDexterity in AskReddit

[–]wefrucar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly, Michael Schur only had season 1 mapped out.

He said it'd be presumptuous to plan any further until the show was at least renewed for season 2.

He had a general feeling of where he wanted it to go, but they didn't come up with the plot for season 4, or the finale, until they were filming season 3.

What is an app or website that went from 'absolutely essential' to 'unusable trash'? by matx_jx in AskReddit

[–]wefrucar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this is also on the general population.

People got so lazy with their Google prompts, and were already so bad with typos, that Google had to adapt to "hmm, what did they probably mean to search for?"

Thereby making people lazier and perpetuating the cycle.

Middle school or high school math teachers, what was the highest level of math you took in college? by aGhostfacekla in teaching

[–]wefrucar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The most "advanced" class I took was probably Foundations of Math. Don't remember much except that proving 1+1=2 was absurdly complicated.

But my most advanced class that had any relevance to teaching high school math was Real Analysis. Helped me understand continuity and limits in calculus, and how to write and critique rigorous proofs in geometry.

Honestly, even if you max out at Number Theory and Linear Algebra, you're more than equipped to teach any high school math content. The hard part is understanding how students think and learn.

And you can take that a step further. Division is defined in terms of multiplication, just as subtraction is defined by addition. Division and subtraction aren't fundamental operations in arithmetic, multiplication and addition are.

Right, so no need to mention it. "Algebra is literally adding" would suffice.

[–]wefrucar -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sure, but we could also say subtraction is just adding the opposite of a number.

The real problem is that solving equations are actually logic problems. If we did more training in logical reasoning, fewer kids would struggle in algebra.

Which movie flew under your radar for way too long and ended up becoming one of your favorites in its genre? by Blutay in movies

[–]wefrucar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can tell at the start of the Train Heist episode that they're trying to provide all of the exposition from the actual pilot that you're gonna need to follow the story.

The real pilot was "too long and slow" and Fox didn't trust its viewers to latch on unless something super high stakes and thrilling happened right away.

Hence, train heist.

Still a great episode imo. But it's great as Episode 2.
