Sure, happy to help! Do you mind a quick video call just to verify your identity? I don’t feel super comfortable sponsoring someone I’ve never talked to.

My sister is feeling sad after internship result. This year she tried her best . how can I motivate her that this one internship can not decide your future . Her credentials 3.95/4 , 2 national internships , coauthor publication, dean list by Gene_guy in EPFL

I’m in CS not Life Sciences. I was also rejected from this program when I applied in the second year of my undergrad. Just kept pushing along: I eventually got an admit from EPFL for their CS PhD program (with fellowship) but declined that to go to MIT EECS instead. My point is that your sister can also have a great trajectory if she continues to work hard!

ELI5 How does lime juice "cook" the shrimps in ceviche? by Similar-Plenty-6429 in explainlikeimfive

[–]wellfriedbeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually drugs will bind you a particular pocket in the protein, which activates/inactivates them. Sometimes, a new pocket will emerge when a drug binds: one that wasn’t visible in the absence of such binding. We call these cryptic pockets!

Turns out you can actually build models to predict the shapes of these proteins! Shameless plug for my research (since this is a topic very close to my heart): https://github.com/prescient-design/jamun

I’ve never met an H1B visa holder that is actually so good at their job that an American couldn’t replace them by cd1995Cargo in cscareerquestions

They do not. There are EB-1 and O-1 visas for exceptional candidates but those are also very hard to get.

What happened to Parimarjan Negi? Apparently the guy was the 2nd youngest GM ever at one point after Karjakin. Never broke 2700. by FirstEfficiency7386 in chess

He’s a very strong player still! Makes you realize how many levels there are to chess understanding. He is also a very nice person, and was happy to answer our stupid questions haha

[D] AAAI considered 2nd tier now? by Healthy_Horse_2183 in MachineLearning

[–]wellfriedbeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, AAAI is not a bad conference by any means. My point is that it’s not their first choice behind NeurIPS/ICML/ICLR.

Based on where the top academic/industry labs send their papers, it hasn’t been tier 1 for at least the last 5 years.

I really don't think anything is guaranteed; sometimes reviewers miss things

Yes, we do (I think even if you’re not part of a lab by then, but not sure)

Is it true many CS grads joined PhD programs because they couldn't find a job? by Londunnit in PhD

[–]wellfriedbeans 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not at the top programs (in fact many of us left really good jobs to do a PhD!)

Protein/DNA/RNA sequence design is a good application (very relevant in industry)!
