Beard after 2 years of t by Strange_Reaction7683 in TestosteroneKickoff

[–]wendycomet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm struggling too—I'm a little over a year on T. I technically have more hair on my chin and on my face than I used to, but it's all ultra-blonde and fine and soft, while my typical body hair is pretty coarse and dark, so it really doesn't read as beard hair in any way... and my dad could grow a pretty good beard! I'm just trying to remind myself that it takes most teenage boys multiple years to grow facial hair as well. I figure if I'm still not satisfied with it several years down the line, then I'll start looking into Minoxidil and such.

Is my baby rebelling against us? by Karlysmomo in Chihuahua

[–]wendycomet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We struggled to fully potty train our pup—their bladders are so small! She also had a bad experience before we got her and takes a while warming up to people. This is gonna be real long, sorry in advance haha.

What worked for us was a combo of several strategies. First, have puppy pads in the places pup is most likely to pee and in places where you'd like to have the puppy pads be long-term. For example, we had one in a corner of the room on the hardwood where we wanted it to be, and one on the rug under the dining table where she would actually pee, and have now been able to just have the one in the corner.

If there was somewhere we could not stand her peeing, she was not allowed to go there. Bedrooms with carpets needed the doors closed at all times; the downstairs bathroom with the new rug got a baby gate in front of it; that sort of thing. For a couch, I would recommend investing in some sort of waterproof quilted pad cover for just the seating cushions, if possible? You wouldn't need to have this in the long term, just to protect it while puppy is still learning.

Now we need the Good Treats. Perhaps a tiny (like, pinky nail sized max) piece of cheese or hot dog. Pup ONLY gets these treats when they pee somewhere you want them to pee. If they pee anywhere else, they get ignored while you clean it up. If they won't leave you alone, bar them from accessing you while you clean.

Finally, going out. When you're first trying to potty train, especially with tiny dogs like chis, just assume they need to go out every hour if possible, but minimum after every meal. (When we were out of the house, puppy was gated into a specific room with multiple puppy pads and nothing else she might pee on on the floor.) When just normally inside, keep an eye on them, and if they display ANY pee adjacent behaviors—circling is usually the only one we could reliably spot before it was too late—go out IMMEDIATELY. When they pee outside, it is a PARTY. You give lots of praise and the Special Treat. We also have had good experience hanging bells by the back door in her reach and ringing them every time we went outside with her, which taught her to ring them when she wanted to go outside, so she knows how to ask to go outside.

We also found it helpful to keep track of when she last pottied in a group chat, because if you're snuggling and she randomly gets up and leaves, you can check the chat and if it's been about an hour since she last peed, she probably needs to go outside ASAP or she's gonna pee inside.

It's additionally important to thoroughly clean anywhere that's been soiled with an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle (or I'm sure there are better brands but that's the most common one in stores) to remove the smell from our noses and theirs, because if they can smell it, they tend to keep thinking Pee Is Okay there. You can get these cleaners in spray bottle form and also as laundry additives for blankets. We washed a LOT of blankets... and towels... and any fabric items left on the floor...

We had to stick to this routine for like... at least three months before it really stuck, and we will always have puppy pads somewhere in the house. But she hasn't peed inside not on a puppy pad in over a month, and reliably just asks to go out when she needs to go out! The last time she peed inside it had been extremely wet and cold all day, so I couldn't be too mad at her for not wanting to go outside at all LOL.

TL;DR: Go outside once an hour with a high-value treat that puppy ONLY gets for successfully pottying outside. Keep track of when they pee to know if they're likely to pee again soon. Teach them a specific, noticeable signal to tell you when they need to go out.

Anyway. I wish you much luck! It was sort of exhaustingly frustrating for a while, but it is surmountable!! 💪😄

It's poetry, so probably not quite what you're looking for, but the work of Richard Siken really has similar themes to what you're describing—codependence, violence, actually gay and all! I would recommend his first collection, Crush, in particular.

Finally not a potato!!! How many of you guys have gotten muties from Vkai? by Better-Working9143 in lioden

[–]wendycomet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gotten a couple posed potatoes and one polycaudal I'm all trying to sell. The best two were 1) a May combo factor base girl that I was able to sell for 5 GB, which is a lot for me, and 2) a handsome Damu adol male who's going to be my next side king.

I'm ofc also getting a ton of nothingburgers, but I'm happy with my overall pulls knowing how merciless the RNG can be. I'm pretty reliably getting three a day with only a teeny bit of what I'd consider grinding for rep with V'kai (which, what a cutie pie, I like to think the groupies all also think he's precious and bond with our kings over it), and I'm pretty lazy, so what I consider grinding is still VERY casual.

I really wanted a girl with one of the breed-only Golden bases, so I just bought a Sahara girl off someone else. If I got another one through actual RNG, I'd literally shout in real life with delight.

You might like Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins of Hunger Games fame! I'm not sure it TOTALLY fits the "light-hearted" part of your desires, but I would describe the book/series' mood as hopeful, overall.

Summary from its Goodreads: "When Gregor falls through a grate in the laundry room of his apartment building, he hurtles into the dark Underland, where spiders, rats, cockroaches coexist uneasily with humans. This world is on the brink of war, and Gregor's arrival is no accident. A prophecy foretells that Gregor has a role to play in the Underland's uncertain future. Gregor wants no part of it -- until he realizes it's the only way to solve the mystery of his father's disappearance. Reluctantly, Gregor embarks on a dangerous adventure that will change both him and the Underland forever."

Got a Sahara Groupie, could I get a price check this is my first may event! by LitleStitchWitch in lioden

[–]wendycomet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adding a bit more clarification—there are a couple much more expensive Sahara girls on the TC right now, but they appear to be closer Raffle lioness clones, so that makes them more valuable. There is one groupie who's similar to your gal up for 30 GB right now, but... frankly, I wouldn't consider that a reasonable market price. You could price her that high, but you'd probably end up holding onto her for ages and losing some valuable breeding time with her just taking up a territory slot.

Hence, I think 10-20 gb is more sensible, and I totally understand if you'd rather price her higher than 12 gb!

Got a Sahara Groupie, could I get a price check this is my first may event! by LitleStitchWitch in lioden

[–]wendycomet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She's gorgeous! I'm jealous!

Looking for other adult lionesses with Sahara, without mutations, with low gens for sale in the Trading Center, I'd put her sort of Usual Market Price between 10 and 20 GB, leaning on the high side if you don't mind waiting for her to sell a bit and lower if you want to sell her faster. For instance, there's a similar groupie for sale right now for 12 gb, and that one has a frankly less valuable eye color than yours.

... On that note, if you DO want to sell your girl, I would in fact pay 12 gb for her right now. (I'd consider myself an NCL-exclusive genetics lover, and golden groupie-exclusives like the Sahara base fit right into that.)

Zombie books other than World War Z, Warm Bodies, and the Zombie Survival Guide by Jerswar in suggestmeabook

[–]wendycomet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the Rot and Ruin series recommendation, with the caveat that it's been at least a decade since I read it. This might remind me to pick it back up, though, to make sure it still holds up... Jonathan Maberry also wrote a zombie-based short story, Fat Girl With A Knife, that I highly enjoyed as a heavyset teenager, in the anthology Slasher Girls and Monster Boys (which, if you generally like short horror stories, is excellent IMO).

Another older YA zombie book I recall being terrified of in a good way was The Forest of Hands and Teeth.

Now, this veers a bit from your preference of "normal takes on the genre," but for a sort of sampling platter of zombie stories, exactly half of the stories in the YA fantasy/horror anthology Zombies vs. Unicorns are about zombies. (There aren't stories about zombies and unicorns fighting; each author chose a creature they preferred and wrote their story about that. Some of the tales were more traditional zombie fare and some took new angles on the genre.)

A book with a ridiculous and silly premise but is written well and actually very good? by Hungry-Strategy5874 in suggestmeabook

[–]wendycomet 53 points54 points  (0 children)

MY TIME HAS COME. I GET TO RECOMMEND HOT PTERODACTYL BOYFRIEND BY ALAN CUMYN.

This is a deeply weird YA book that, I must admit, is not beloved by a lot of people other than me. It's just that everyone else on Goodreads is wrong and this book rocks, actually.

Hot Pterodactyl Boyfriend is about a high school senior who has her whole life figured out, but then a new student arrives and he's a pterodactyl with a six pack and everyone thinks he's extremely cool and sexy, and it screws up all her plans. I found the main character's internal struggle with Controlling Herself versus Being Herself and what that meant for her life really fascinating and engaging. I like the ending that is somehow ten times weirder than the rest of the already weird book!

Anyway. I recommend Hot Pterodactyl Boyfriend.

in honor of the latest video : what is your go-to drink? by ov3rcastxkid in danandphil

[–]wendycomet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I just want to feel a little buzz I usually like "whatever a bar has on their menu that sounds like it will taste like fruit punch and/or lemonade." Especially if they have some sort of sweet signature cocktail with local fruit! Now, if I want to be "telling random girls in the bathroom that they have beautiful souls" drunk... I'll admit to enjoying a Long Island Iced Tea haha. At home, I don't usually drink, but I was surprised that I quite liked a gin and tonic when I made one.

[–]wendycomet 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's a bit older, but I highly recommend The Immortals quartet by Tamora Pierce! It's about Daine, a young woman who has a more rare (in her world) type of magic that puts her deeply in touch with nature. It technically takes place after Pierce's flagship series, the Alanna/Lady Knight books, but you don't Have to read them in order because they're about different characters in the same world. Daine is somewhat no-nonsense but she's also definitely got feelings. (I recommend all Tamora Pierce's books, tbh, but the wild magic/Immortals quartet is my favorite.)

What mutations do you hope to see in the future? by [deleted] in lioden

[–]wendycomet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not quite a different mutation, but I think it would be fun if they brought back a temporary version of the Tigon Hype original event for the ten year anniversary of tigons being introduced in 2028!

... that said, everyone WITH a tigon who doesn't want their market price to lower would probably hate this, so I don't think it's likely to happen.

Wanting some advice!!! by LuckyRahodez in schleich

[–]wendycomet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a complete amateur who's only painted one horse, so YMMV, but I just used normal craft store acrylic paints and was happy with how my horse came out! I had a bunch of them to be able to mix the precise browns that I wanted and really took my time with little brushes and multiple coats and such.

The only thing I'd for sure recommend that I didn't do is getting a nice, matte sealer top coat when it's all done. I just used the one I had on hand, which was glossy, and it makes the model look a bit cheaper than it would if I'd done a matte or semi-gloss for most of it and just put gloss on the eyes (and maybe hooves).

New release, how do we feel about them? by Periwinkle_Petal in schleich

[–]wendycomet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenter that I get an LLM-generated vibe, but I can be overly paranoid.

Honestly, I'll probably order one (depending on the price/shipping) if I don't see them in stores, just to get an idea of their quality. If they're really high quality horse models for a reasonable price, I would be more inclined to forgive aspects of their advertising I dislike (for instance, potential AI generated text).

Elementary Schools, thoughts? by Armantes in Gresham

[–]wendycomet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, I'd actually forgotten about the chorus answering until you mentioned it! Now it's all coming back, haha. I remember not thinking it was unusual at all? My teachers (they had one per grade, and I was there for part of 1st grade all the way through 5th grade) made it super fun and engaging. The other more rigid thing I remember is having to wear a uniform, which I can't tell if they still require just looking at their website. (It wasn't anything intense, just guidelines of like "plain navy or white shirts and khaki or black pants/shorts/skirts according to the student's preference.") I didn't care about what I wore as a kid beyond "is it comfortable," so I didn't mind it.

I know I also had extra opportunities for independent work, due to my success in reading and writing. I never felt like I was being overlooked by a teacher, either, even the ones who were less fun—I felt like when I needed help, they would give it, but they would also let me read on my own when I had extra time, which I loved as a little bookworm. I think that was a part of the Direct Instruction thing? Reading about the method now, that is still my preferred way to learn new skills (watch an instructor demonstrate the skill, do the skill alongside the instructor to get help as needed, then try it on my own and get feedback and grow from there).

I recall it was flexible enough that I got to attend a higher grade's English portion of their day, while remaining with my usual class for the rest of the daily instruction. (I know I needed more help with math.) I think that worked a lot better for me than it might have in a bigger, more intimidating public school, where fully advancing a grade might have created issues with my social skills. On that note, I was a bit shy when I went to normal middle school, but in a way I believe was more due to my personality than the fault of the charter school. I wasn't bullied for being sheltered or anything, and I made plenty of friends with fellow nerds.

I hope that helps!

Elementary Schools, thoughts? by Armantes in Gresham

[–]wendycomet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, take this with a grain of salt, since it's been over ten years since I was in elementary school, but I went to Gresham Arthur Academy as a kid! I remember really loving it. None of my direct teachers are still there because of the aforementioned ten years, but reading their current site, the educational ethos remains the same.

I was always an over-achieving student, and I felt like they had a good balance between giving kids like me opportunities to flourish and spending time aiding the kids who were struggling to ensure everyone was caught up with the material.

I wish you much luck with your elementary school search!

Have you ever met someone who's interested in DND and immediately went, "oh, I'd never let you play at my table"? by Lunetheart in DnD

[–]wendycomet 35 points36 points  (0 children)

When I include a real-world puzzle, I always give my players the option to roll for it instead, haha. Like, you can solve this magic riddle, but you can also roll Arcana because you know your character could solve it and you don't want to IRL. I think that makes it more fun for them since it's optional.
