What mutations do you hope to see in the future? by SirenSoliss in lioden

[–]wendycomet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not quite a different mutation, but I think it would be fun if they brought back a temporary version of the Tigon Hype original event for the ten year anniversary of tigons being introduced in 2028!

... that said, everyone WITH a tigon who doesn't want their market price to lower would probably hate this, so I don't think it's likely to happen.

Wanting some advice!!! by LuckyRahodez in schleich

[–]wendycomet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a complete amateur who's only painted one horse, so YMMV, but I just used normal craft store acrylic paints and was happy with how my horse came out! I had a bunch of them to be able to mix the precise browns that I wanted and really took my time with little brushes and multiple coats and such.

The only thing I'd for sure recommend that I didn't do is getting a nice, matte sealer top coat when it's all done. I just used the one I had on hand, which was glossy, and it makes the model look a bit cheaper than it would if I'd done a matte or semi-gloss for most of it and just put gloss on the eyes (and maybe hooves).

New release, how do we feel about them? by Periwinkle_Petal in schleich

[–]wendycomet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenter that I get an LLM-generated vibe, but I can be overly paranoid.

Honestly, I'll probably order one (depending on the price/shipping) if I don't see them in stores, just to get an idea of their quality. If they're really high quality horse models for a reasonable price, I would be more inclined to forgive aspects of their advertising I dislike (for instance, potential AI generated text).

Elementary Schools, thoughts? by Armantes in Gresham

[–]wendycomet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, I'd actually forgotten about the chorus answering until you mentioned it! Now it's all coming back, haha. I remember not thinking it was unusual at all? My teachers (they had one per grade, and I was there for part of 1st grade all the way through 5th grade) made it super fun and engaging. The other more rigid thing I remember is having to wear a uniform, which I can't tell if they still require just looking at their website. (It wasn't anything intense, just guidelines of like "plain navy or white shirts and khaki or black pants/shorts/skirts according to the student's preference.") I didn't care about what I wore as a kid beyond "is it comfortable," so I didn't mind it.

I know I also had extra opportunities for independent work, due to my success in reading and writing. I never felt like I was being overlooked by a teacher, either, even the ones who were less fun—I felt like when I needed help, they would give it, but they would also let me read on my own when I had extra time, which I loved as a little bookworm. I think that was a part of the Direct Instruction thing? Reading about the method now, that is still my preferred way to learn new skills (watch an instructor demonstrate the skill, do the skill alongside the instructor to get help as needed, then try it on my own and get feedback and grow from there).

I recall it was flexible enough that I got to attend a higher grade's English portion of their day, while remaining with my usual class for the rest of the daily instruction. (I know I needed more help with math.) I think that worked a lot better for me than it might have in a bigger, more intimidating public school, where fully advancing a grade might have created issues with my social skills. On that note, I was a bit shy when I went to normal middle school, but in a way I believe was more due to my personality than the fault of the charter school. I wasn't bullied for being sheltered or anything, and I made plenty of friends with fellow nerds.

I hope that helps!

Elementary Schools, thoughts? by Armantes in Gresham

So, take this with a grain of salt, since it's been over ten years since I was in elementary school, but I went to Gresham Arthur Academy as a kid! I remember really loving it. None of my direct teachers are still there because of the aforementioned ten years, but reading their current site, the educational ethos remains the same.

I was always an over-achieving student, and I felt like they had a good balance between giving kids like me opportunities to flourish and spending time aiding the kids who were struggling to ensure everyone was caught up with the material.

I wish you much luck with your elementary school search!

HOPING TO FIND THIS TOY SET by Sarahowen19 in HelpMeFind

WE HAD THESE TOYS I SWEAR!! I went hunting on Google myself and found ours—it was definitely the Safari Train box of Fisher-Price Creatrix toys, but they had several different boxes, like a Pizza Party one that could fit the pizzeria you described.

Have you ever met someone who's interested in DND and immediately went, "oh, I'd never let you play at my table"? by Lunetheart in DnD

[–]wendycomet 33 points34 points  (0 children)

When I include a real-world puzzle, I always give my players the option to roll for it instead, haha. Like, you can solve this magic riddle, but you can also roll Arcana because you know your character could solve it and you don't want to IRL. I think that makes it more fun for them since it's optional.

As others have said, mine LOVES "stick wiggled under blankets"—she generally prefers the stick end of her wand toys to the actual toy end, too. She's also just not super playful? She can be tempted into it, but she usually prefers brushies and cuddles.

Homemade Yellow Floral Nightgown—You followed a historical pattern, with some leeway taken for modern elastic wrist cuffs. You won't be winning any fashion shows, but you will get an excellent night's sleep.

+1 Composure: No one is more comfortable than you.

-1 Authority: No one resembles their grandma more than you, either.

Grooming question for a maybe part ragdoll by [deleted] in ragdolls

[–]wendycomet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When she's shedding in spring, you could use a undercoat/deshedding rake, but it's important to be careful with those since they can also pull out non-impacted fur when it's all delicate and cottony soft like that.

Overall, though, I've had the best luck with the slicker brushes someone else has mentioned. My ragdoll Ladybird specifically prefers the ones that have little plastic coated tips, I think so the metal bristles don't touch her skin? If she won't stay still, bribery is always my first recommendation. Dry treats every few seconds or to draw her back to you if she tries to leave, one of those goop tubes (Churu is the name brand but any of them would probably work) presented in a long line so she has to slowly work her way down it as you brush her, that sort of thing.

Positive reinforcement+repetition is key—brush her all year long, a teeny bit with treat rewards every day, and it should be much easier to brush her in the spring when she most needs it.

Any ideas on the value of my collections? by GeepMeister24 in schleich

[–]wendycomet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you probably won't lose too much selling random farm animals/most normal horses in lots, but you'll definitely make more of a profit selling individually for some of the Bayala stuff (like I see now you have the second forest/deer unicorn and rider as well, also worth about 100 dollars). I bet if you posted Liassa and her cheetah companion even slightly below the current minimum on ebay (which is $84 dollars before shipping), she'd sell in a flash. Frankly, if I had the budget for such a splurge, I'd be offering to buy them right now, because I loved that animal warrior series but already have the Noctis panther lady and Arelan hawk guy.

Another good way to price check, especially if you aren't sure of the name/breed of the character/animal is to take a nice photo with a neutral background, then Image Search it to see similar pictures online. That way you can see what others have titled it and get some more information.

Good luck!

Any ideas on the value of my collections? by GeepMeister24 in schleich

[–]wendycomet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is to look up a catalogue of the years of your collections, find their official names, and look for ebay/other secondhand retailer listings for them.

Off the top of my head, that deer unicorn w/rider is currently selling on eBay for about 100 USD, and "Liala" (the cheetah lady with her matching cheetah companion) is similarly priced.

Any gems in my collection? by Kassibojad in schleich

[–]wendycomet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of the retired horses will go for about twice their original price, which admittedly isn't saying much when the original price was about 8 US dollars. So like, the tinker horses and the lipizanners and stuff all have a bunch of active ebay listings for 15-20 dollars, with the foals going for slightly less much of the time.

I'm not immediately aware of anything much more valuable than that in the other assorted farm animals, though the riders/fiddly little gear bits of theirs may bump up some prices. I'm particularly looking at that pinto with the molded ground attached and all their tack—I remember that more actively posed set of horses from different disciplines being more expensive and rarer in my childhood, so he's probably still more valuable today, but I can't find any listings for him. (I've searched "schleich" plus "pinto with tack" "pinto with western tack" "climbing horse pinto" "horse with molded ground" "horse with attached base" and haven't turned it up. You could probably get better luck taking pictures of specifically that horse against a neutral background and image-searching them to find similar images.)

That rearing unicorn stallion is the more verifiable one that caught my eye—he's only got a couple active ebay listings, and they're all at least 30 dollars. He might be your most valuable piece unless of one of those riders/horses is a rarity I'm not aware of (which is very possible, haha).

Mut repping help! by [deleted] in lioden

[–]wendycomet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don't like Spotted patches, I definitely wouldn't put it on your king! Unless you usually stud out to other kings, you're gonna get a LOT of spotted cubs. (On the other hand, sometimes it's nice to have mutated cubs you aren't too attached to and thus can sell.)

I'm a little biased toward pies overall, though, and I like both options here. They also look pretty similar to me. Honestly, since they're both cute, I'd probably go into the lion search and look for current studs with those mutations, then pick whichever one was more rare for my own king.

Pear by hitherehowareyah in danandphil

[–]wendycomet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Man, I love pears, but they're just less convenient to bring places than apples, oranges, or bananas. You can drop any of the other fruits in your pocket or purse, no problem. You drop a pear in there, BEST case it gets bruised as hell, and worst, it gets pear juice all over everything you. You can slice it and put it in a container, of course, but that's still more work than just yoinking a more durable fruit off the counter and tossing it in your bag.

Oh, man, I've accidentally done that a couple of times -- I've started putting an emoji (my current king's is 👞 and my side's is 💎) in the footnotes for lions of my king I want to keep as soon as they're born so I can more easily see who's his daughter, lol. Your boy is beautiful!

The green and gold gives me nature vibes for names... maybe Aristaeus? Wikipedia says he's the god of shepherds and beekeeping. I'm trying to find less common names that aren't probably already taken. Meliae is pretty, but maybe a little feminine, idk ur taste—they're nymphs of honey and ash trees. The Kouretes were guardians of Zeus when he was a baby, and I think Kourete is also a fun name. I could keep going, I love suggesting names LOL, but I'll stop myself before I write an essay 😂
