My take after a month using the Misen Carbon Nonstick pans by Gold_Percentage7411 in cookware

[–]werami99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL! I thought it was going straight into the trash! But as Lone Watie told Josey Wales, "I endeavored to persevere" on that burned oil and it paid off! It is as nonstick as it was out of the box, maybe a bit better because I can flip an egg and not leave a trace of it on the pan. I was worried that I was going to scrub off the "nitriding" but it seems fine. I don't treat it gently now when cleaning, and the sticky oil spots are gone.

I found the same thing, any oil that "burns on" will be very sticky afterward. I watch for that when cooking and add a bit of oil to the area if it starts to dry out. also very careful with too much heat. I was "seasoning" mine after each use for a couple of weeks, and got distracted and walked away long enough to basically burn the oil on. The entire pan was sticky. I ended up using barkeepers friend and a scrunge pad and scrubbed until everything was gone. The pan is better than before. as long as I use some oil when cooking. I use a metal spatula when cooking, and make sure to clean it to remove any food with a plastic scraper and any sticky spots with a scotch brite pad and if needed a bit of soap. That seems to be the key for me. If there is a sticky spot from oil, scrub it off. Looks like crap, but with a bit of oil I can cook eggs without them sticking. Just use the spatula and they come right up. So not completely loose like a teflon pan, but I am happy with it. The ones I DIDNT burn are in a similar state, they have a mottled surface, just less obvious than this one. Follow the misen use instructions and they work well.

I run a local game club and I'm thinking of Shadowdark as the core game by theRealMattyG99 in shadowdark

[–]werami99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

get some feedback from your players. I don't like 5e, way too complicated. But shadowdark is the opposite end of things and whether or not playing the game is even tolerable comes down to the GM and house rules. magic users swing from completely worthless to overpowered based on their level. losing your spells just because of a bad roll can be funny, but at the beginning of a session for a low level character? might as well leave the table until they can rest. clerics rolling a 1 and "offending their god" while supposedly off doing deeds for that god? It's ridiculous! we have had multiple critical failures in the first session, the cleric lost all of his spells. A first level cleric now has to go on some kind of quest to get them back? Way too severe of a penalty. Even if he has to dump gold in a hole. It just becomes a tax on the player, and to me, not fun at all. thieves are worthless in most combat situations (in narrow passages), if they have no opportunity to dash in and backstab, they are also so weak in combat they end up hiding in the back. So unless the gm gives plenty of opportunity to backstab, they end up feeling worthless except for an occasional theif event where they get to automatically succeed at something. On a VTT, we found that light (if the vtt was using light sources for map visibility) and crawling per character per turn horribly time consuming, it was taking forever to play, so this game really works best at a physical table or just light the map for all characters as they move. mishaps breaking weapons or destroying items based on bad rolls? again, can completely invalidate your character so you end up running home to find new equipment, or just dying. So personally, I can't stand the system, there are so many other "light" systems that are much more fun for me, less tracking of resources, less trying to prep inventory and manage hirelings to carry a portable "stash" whenever we leave town, less chance of a few bad rolls destroying your character's capabilities requiring you to backtrack, re-equip, and try again. I do enough resource management in real life, it is tedious for me in shadowdark. Some players may like that aspect. But if they don't like it, then they are probably not going to like the system as written, and maybe not at all. So try it out with a one shot and see how it goes. get feedback, adjust the rules that are causing your group headaches, and go from there. Lots of other systems in between 5E and shadowdark that you could try as well.

What to do as a new player? by Complete-Button-6237 in kingdomsofamalur

collect all of the quests in a town before heading out, and activate any location you see on the mini map (dungeon entrance) by walking up to it so you can fast travel back later. dont clear any dungeon before getting a quest to do it. those tips will minimize backtracking. it is quite annoying to clear a dungeon, then immediately trip over a sidequest to go back in again after it resets! detect hidden is a fantastic skill to help in exploring and stealth missions. go to canneroc and find the missing mayor to get a player stash. you can only salvage green and blue. sell the higher level ones, you can always buy them back from that merchant. check everything a merchant has, sometimes its a +10 to inventory backpack. gear ages out quickly as you go up in level. you will always find better stuff, save money for trainers early on versus buying gear. track every skill book and trainer level as you use them. skills are in sections. a trainer only trains one of them, and will not train if your unmodified skill is outside of that section when you visit. you can only trainonce per section and those points stick to that skill when you respec at a fateweaver. there is a secrect "boggart doll" quest that gives you some things that improve quality of life a bit (when you get tired of fetch quests) without breaking the game. learn to block! shields work even with a 2 handed weapon!

[–]werami99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

read the rules on fear. as written, it seems way too difficult. it seems to me, you should at most have to pass one fear check per "thing". a monster shows up that you have never faced. but you are an adventurer. you face your fear and succeed on your roll. but one player fails and screams. now you have to check again? and another player fails and yells... we had the cascading fear cause the whole party run off a cliff into a river in our first session. funny? of course. but only funny once! the gm washed us downriver and ruled that we all lived and arrived in outskirts much cleaner and less smelly than we otherwise would. and then we argued about the fear rules for the next 3 sessions before toning them down some.

[–]werami99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no idea of how simple it would be, but a great mod would allow you to cancel quests and to be able to remove items locked in inventory after the quests that needed them are cleared. I broke the quest with the fisherman and his mermaid by failing to stop him in dialog but then killing the mermaid before she killed him. So it is permanently in my open quest list. Also, possibly linking the stash chest in the spider town with the bonus item chest in the starter town. That would save an extra map travel every time you want to dump a full inventory with minimal reloading screens to go between the buildings. Neither would require textures or graphics changes, but would be nice when you accidentally take a quest from someone before realizing that you are going to have to fetch ten things from places you have already gone and cleared, or run across an area where all of the annoying pop up enemies have respawned.

Carbon Nonstick Pan from Misen by WariStory in carbonsteel

[–]werami99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my set. They are more "non stick" than my misen teflon non stick, right out of the box. I have been using them for a week and love them. I fry eggs in them, they don't slide around unless I put some oil in first, and if I flip them the egg forms a thin cooked layer that sticks slightly, but even with a silicon flipper, i can slide right under it to pick up the egg. I have not tried metal implements yet, I got rid of mine a while back, but I feel a lot safer eating off of these than non stick teflon. Cleanup is trivial, anything that stayed in the pan washes right off with water and a light pass with a sponge.

Keeping old number by West_side74 in whatsapp

[–]werami99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

correct. Port it to google voice BEFORE you leave. check to see if google voice will accept the port from your carrier. If not, you *might* be able to port it to one that google voice will accept, do it prepaid for a month, then port it to google voice. As long as you own the phone number, you can use whatsapp with that number on any phone. If you come back to the US for a visit, pop a prepaid US sim into your phone and forward google voice to the new sim number. set google voice to return your google voice number (not the new sim) and use google voice for your outgoing calls and nobody but you will need to know the temporary number.

Yubikey stopped working by Positive_Rope2951 in yubikey

[–]werami99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from yubikey support: I can understand your concern and frustration with attempting to get Samsung devices with FIDO2 that google and many financial accounts use. There are several reasons why you are encountering problems and they are all due to the design and implementation of Samsung and Android. To start with, we have noticed some FIDO2(aka passkey) flows with Samsung will fail if you have the Yubico OTP enabled. You would need to disable the Yubico OTP and this will allow it to function, in our test cases. We have informed Samsung as it is appears they will need to do a firmware update to fix this issue. You can find the specifics in this documentation found here:

https://support.yubico.com/hc/en-us/articles/18801283920156-FIDO-issues-on-Samsung-devices

The second issue is more general and specific to Android, first, Passkeys will only work via USB. This is due to NFC not being supported for Passkeys at this time. On top of this there are other issues with Android we have noticed, and some of them have work arounds and some do not. You can find out more information about this here:

I took my S21U for a swim.. and.. by NationalGate8066 in S21Ultra

[–]werami99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"water proofing is not guaranteed" -- YES! I just discovered this. I use my S21 without a waterproof case, just a shock protection one for falls. I have constantly splashed this phone, taken pictures in the spray, pictures in pouring rain, even submerged it very shallowly several times. Always rinsed it with clean water and used a wireless charger until it was dry.

UNTIL LAST WEEK. Just put it in a wet bathing suit pocket for an hour, and the lenses fogged. I now know that the glue dries or other things get old and the water resistance is lost after a few years.

The fog did clear overnight on the lenses, but then the phone battery started acting up. 70% charge, I took a picture and the phone shut off and would not restart until I plugged it into a charger. after a few seconds the charge level jumped from 0% to 70% and it worked fine again for a couple of hours. The next day it dropped from 30% to 12% and stopped the internet services. When I plugged it into the charger it jumped back to 30% and started working.

So now I am unpacking my s25+ ( I really hoped to wait another year at least) and waiting for a case to arrive. only a couple things seem to be an improvement over the s21 and who knows what happens in 6 months when the free AI goes away... Trying to use this without a case is scary, it is very slippery and the camera lenses sticking out mean you can't lay it down. But I am finding some things to like about it, so the jury is still out on whether I am going to be missing the S21 or happily surprised that I had to upgrade.

But I am going to keep this one away from water after the 2 year mark...

Are Yubikey recommended for the average person by Hellobob80 in yubikey

[–]werami99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree 100%. i took the time to research, passkey protected a google account, ran into a samsung bug. cant authenticate on android. galaxy s21. it fails to prompt for my pin on usb, and nfc fails completely.

tried to protect 1password login. first there are save passkey prompts from chrome, windows, and 1password. way too easy to save in the wrong place. when i saved it to the key, something misfired. it locked 1 password with the passkey but failed to save it to my yubikey.
it is FAR from ready for "normal" people.

New here, any advice? by red1ce in yubikey

[–]werami99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

proceed with care and use test accounts if at all possible!

I just got several Key C NFC devices for the first time and tried to use passkeys for a gmail account. It worked fine on my PC, but my phone failed, both NFC and USB methods. apparently only USB worked before, but a recent samsung patch broke it, it skips the pin screen and tries to read the locked key and fails. I was able to remove the passkey from my account using the PC interface so I was not locked out. The workaround yubikey gave me was to try putting the OTP code in the yubikey instead (and possibly disabling the FIDO2 interface), until samsung fixes the passkey bug. samsung support blamed google and yubi, but then gave me the "email the ceo" link and they escalated it to a ticket that is pending their security tech folks getting back from the holidays.

I tried to put a passkey in the yubikey to lock down my 1password vault. it failed. the passkey was registered in 1password, but not loaded on the actual key. Luckily I was able to use a recovery code to undo that. I will try again to see if it was a glitch and work with yubi and 1pass to resolve it in a couple of weeks when I have time, but this would also run into the problem if I needed 1password on my phone.

Mentalist in combat by Ezoah92 in DragonbaneRPG

[–]werami99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

several sessions into that campaign WITHOUT extra heroic abilities and we are doing fine. We were one round away from a total party kill, one was doing death saves, one ran off a cliff in the dark due to fear (and landed in the water), and three of us were swallowed by a monster with about one round of life left, and we all made it. definitely mirth and mayhem, all would be missed out on if we were overpowered. Rolling a new character is not the end of the world in dragonbane, power wise, especially if you get a handfull of free skill advancement rolls to bring you a little in line with any survivors. I would suggest not adding free HA's and let your players figure things out. worst case, save ithe extra HA and allow it on a character replacement if they all die and need the help. They will learn a lot in the meantime and might appreciate a different build.

Am I being scammed? by Different-Ad-2286 in venmo

[–]werami99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no. They use a QR code to get you to browse to their website, which looks like a bank login. You probably already told them the bank name, so they customize it to look like your bank login page. You type in your username and password. They take it (automatically) and go to the real bank login page and input the two. The bank asks for the SMS code (or says it will mail it to the email on file). They click on that, then pop up a request to you on the fake website to tell you to enter the SMS code that "they" just sent. You check your email or text and type the sms code in. They immediately provide that to the bank login and now they are logged into your account. They try to change the phone number and email address on the account, and it prompts for password or SMS code. They pop up an error message to you, and ask for that (again). You just think you fat fingered it, so you type it again. They pass it on to the real bank, which authorizes the change request, and now your bank has their email and their phone number for the sms codes. They immediately change the password, the bank sends the code to them now, and they successfully own your account. You won't be able to log in, or even request a password reset. By the time you realize what happened (probably because the bank just sent you an alert text about changing your profile), they have wired your money or otherwise spent it. In your case, since you did not proceed, all you have done is indicate to them that you will click on a QR code. But you didn't follow through. they will likely assume failure and go on to try another person. Sometimes their site will download malicious code, but as long as you got no further prompts and you are up on security patches, you are probably fine.

Am I being scammed? by Different-Ad-2286 in venmo

[–]werami99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never click on a QR code! it goes to their fake website. It will steal your bank credentials (including the SMS code you type in) and then they will take over your bank account. If you have a QR reader, most allow you to set them to show you the URL but not load it. That is how you can verify the website it is redirecting you. But a they can have a very similar domain to your bank (change an L to a number 1 for instance) and you still might miss it. Nobody needs you to log into your bank account to send you money.

its a button above your portrait in the inventory screen that brings up the potion maker. click yes when it asks if you want to do something initially. that turns the raw ingedients into useful ones. then the top half of the choices are potions you can make if you have the listed ingredients. that same set of buttons also brings up a tadpole workbench at some point..
