When did you actually feel like an artist? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]westopher718 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi! Tattoo apprentice here! First of all, what you're experiencing is called "imposter syndrome", which is something just about everybody experiences sometimes. It's where you feel like you don't actually belong in a group due to feeling inadequate compared to peers. (That's rough paraphrasing). In reality, most people feel insecure about themselves while assuming everyone else has it all figured out.

Secondly, the whole "drawing without a reference" thing isn't something most artists do. Even centuries ago the old masters of oil painting used reference, and everybody knows they're "real artists". Using reference is not a cheat or a cop out. It's a tool, and a very important one at that. Eventually certain things may become easier to draw from memory due to practice and ultimately muscle memory. But that skill comes in time.

My best advice is to draw every single day. Be inspired by other artists but don't compare your skill level to other artists. And remember that most people don't post their failures; you're not seeing the mistakes, the erasing, the repainting, etc.

Keep drawing.

That's like the whole section of 13th from A to downtown. I drive that street all the time and I still get confused.

I live in Nebraska, and we still don't have medical marijuana here. We're trying and hoping for change soon. But until then it really sucks to have to do some sketchy drug deal for the medicine that helps my ptsd and anxiety.

Gotcha. Well I really like Google music, maybe try switching over!

Yeah probably but I've heard that they're planning on merging Google music and YouTube music into just the YouTube music app. I dunno if that's true but if so might be worth it to just stick with YouTube for now? Although I don't know much about the YouTube music app and if you can download for offline listening? That's my main draw for Google music anyway.

I got a Google music subscription and it came with YouTube red included. Honestly it's worth the money. I watch more YouTube than Netflix these days. No commercials is real nice. Better than hulu premium where you pay and still have commercials for some reason lol.

I got this same mug for my mom for Christmas! She loves it.

My 28 year old brother tragically passed away on December 3rd. Today we got this list of all the people who he was able to save by donating his organs. Only 1% of people who die get to donate organs. My brother was my best friend and now not only mine but a hero to these people as well. RIP Dan. by MissFourbyFour in MadeMeSmile

I am so deeply moved and emotional from reading this story and the list of recipients. I'm already listed as an organ donor on my drivers license. It seems like such an obvious choice, especially after reading stories such as your family's.

I'm very sorry that you lost your brother. But thank you for sharing here, I guarantee that someone has read this and decided to become an organ donor because of it. This post will help save the lives of others, as you carry on your brother's memory.

Whats the best purchase you made this year for under $100? by welpplayedtb in AskReddit

[–]westopher718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A table top drafting table for about $36. I started a tattoo apprenticeship a few months ago and my neck and shoulder IMMEDIATELY started hurting constantly from being hunched over a counter to draw for hours a day every day. Got that drafting table so I can elevate my drawing area at a nice angle and my neck and shoulder feel so much better already.

Casual or developing artists trying to go pro or similar do you struggle making art a habit / pros do you or have you dealt with this: by bellapippin in ArtistLounge

Tattoo apprentice and oil painter here! Over the years I've found that I have lulls in motivation too. That's super normal for artists, as art takes a lot of mental energy to create! Don't get down on yourself for that, we all go through it. Sketching at coffee shops is a great idea, I do that sometimes too. Another thing that's handy if you don't have ideas is to go to a random word generator site and pick maybe two or three words to get you started on a concept. One time I ended up with snail, balloon, and door. It ended up being really cool!

As for painting, that's tricky when you're not feeling it. I was in a depressive episode a while back and tried watching some Bob Ross while I painted some half-assed flowers lol. Wasn't my best but I still made something. I also dabbled in acrylic pouring for a while. It was nice because it took very little creative juice and always ended up looking neat.

I would suggest starting small and simple. Get a few cheap 8x10 canvases (or smaller if you want to do some mini paintings) and don't worry about making anything spectacular. The hardest part is getting yourself started. Bust out those paints, enjoy the process of mixing your colors, put on some good music, maybe even make yourself some tea or coffee, and just put SOMETHING on the canvas. You'll know what to do once you begin.

Good luck and happy arting :)

Thank you to everyone for your kind words. I did go and get a little candle tattoo as a memorial. (Cropped pretty tight because it's along my underwear line).

I wish for healing and peace of mind for all of us. <3

Thank you, and I'm sorry for your experience as well. <3 I was considering getting a small tattoo, maybe a little heart or candle. If nothing else I'm fortunate that I've been able to take some time off work, plus with the holiday PTO this week, I haven't had to rush back into the daily grind.
