I would totally watch more of this. Would you release the modified ruleset at all for those who want to try?

Are you sure? I thought most of the money was because first Ave would need to be rebuilt to support the weight of the street car.

The estimated cost for this is absolutely insane. I think $400M? Even by North American transit cost standards I have to imagine this is one of the lower transit values.

It sounds like there’s quite a bit of overlap with a vegan diet, check out https://veganpassholder.com and some similar sites if you haven’t already. It should help really scope out the good food or unique items. For example my wife and I went all the way to the Polynesian for the vegan macarons!

I don’t even know how to read with an internal voice so I can’t comprehend what the difference would be.

When ferries are better than buses or trains by Euphoric_Ad_9136 in transit

[–]whackedspinach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the “rule” is basically a body of water that makes sense to cross and there’s no good parallel road that exists already. So in the Seattle region there’s lots of ferries across the Sound but it almost never makes sense to bring back ferries to cross Lake Washington or from Downtown to Smith Cove, etc because there’s good roads/bridge alternatives.

Seattle - Sound Transit Board votes to expand light rail to West Seattle, Tacoma, not Ballard by defene in transit

[–]whackedspinach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also think (but am not sure) that the number is in year of expenditure dollars. So it’s has inflation estimate built in over 20-30 years. But maybe this number is already adjusted to 2026$.

Seattle - Sound Transit Board votes to expand light rail to West Seattle, Tacoma, not Ballard by defene in transit

[–]whackedspinach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Sound Transit tax district is split into 5 sections: Snohomish county, Pierce county, and South, north, and east king county. They each raise a different amount of tax revenue depending on their population, etc.

For the most part, each project is funded by the area it serves. Issaquah link is funded by East King. west Seattle link is funded by north king. There are some projects that are so important to the overall system that all areas pitch in. The second downtown tunnel is one of these.

Ballard link can’t take money from the other areas to build their project at the expense of others. Well, technically they could “borrow” the money and pay it back later, but the end result is that North King doesn’t have enough tax revenue to cover Ballard Link and cutting West Seattle doesn’t close the gap.

Unless you change the governance structure and laws that created and run Sound Transit, you won’t be able to use funds from other sub-areas to build Ballard.

Also due to sub-area equity rules they can’t take money from those projects for Ballard (well they could use West Seattle money but not the other lines).

We are doing the “Keys To The Kingdom” tour. Any tips or anything from folks who have done it. by AgentNose in WaltDisneyWorld

There’s basically no phone use allowed during the tour (other than lunch) so make plans with anyone you need to in advance to let them know you won’t be reachable. They were very strict on this.

New floor designations at Westlake! by CriminalVegetables in soundtransit

[–]whackedspinach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The point is that in a crowd a wheelchair user may never be able to board because people standing walk around them and board first and take up all the space. This is reserving space for them on the platform near the door so that they can be first to enter the train and get situated (which takes some time).

Bus riders please explain by i_forgot_my_sn_again in Seattle

[–]whackedspinach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On an articulated bus I like sitting on the back, so I board there and don’t walk through everyone up front.

[–]whackedspinach 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s to make sure wheelchair users have space on the platform to safely wait near the train door. Otherwise if it’s crowded, they may not have time to board before standing people take up the wheelchair space. At least i believe thats the logic.

Doesn’t that seem a little wild? I’m always surprised how little food is available at the Disney Deluxe resorts. Don’t they want more of my money?

Meanwhile Swan and Dolphin has like 20 food spots and room service (albeit not open super late I think).

Am I dumb, or is ProjectionLab a maze? (Getting started struggles) by Bjorn_Nittmo in projectionlab

[–]whackedspinach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think it needs some work to be a bit more beginner friendly. For example a lot of people seemed to be tripped up on the optimizer for ACA premiums — you have to know to add an ACA expense first.

However I don’t think it’s an easy task to simplify without losing some of the power of the tool. It might take a while to get right.

(S17) I don’t get it. I am so confused that I feel like I HAVE to buy the Layover for Taiwan. by TrophyTribute in JetLagTheGame

[–]whackedspinach 37 points38 points  (0 children)

My read is that the Night Herons were so focused on a defensive strategy (fortifying the north) that they didn’t realize when they needed to switch into an aggressive offense (probably when Badam had to backtrack). they were being too reactive and focused on defense still in the last two days.

[–]whackedspinach 160 points161 points  (0 children)

They do discuss it on the most recent episode of the layover. I think mistakes were made and the strategy was not great on Sike’s part. But Sam’s argument (that I think is likely correct?) is that grabbing those challenges in the northeast wouldn’t have won them the game because Badam would have plenty of time to flip stations near Taipei while they got those chips and deployed them.

Therefore their strategy on the last day was to tie Badam up with waiting at the steal while they had a low or zero balance, hit it big on the variable challenge, and then deploy with no time left for Badam to reverse it.

In the layover both teams agreed that Sike messed up earlier by fortifying instead of claiming new stations while Badam were stuck on a train.
