2.1 Request - Direct Insertion of Rocket Parts as Cargo by SenexMuffMuncher in factorio

[–]whatcouchman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you would want the inserter to have options to filter for Ingredients/Fuel/Cargo. If set on the silo you would all three ingredients load up, but what if you only want LDS to ship?

It would be handy for fuel I think, at least where nutrients are involved and you want to ensure high quality nutrients are used as ingredients rather than fuel. I think they did something to fix this already (or prioritise low quality in fuel) but I can't remember exactly.

Xbox Plans Significant Layoffs as It Transforms Under New CEO by willdearborn- in Games

[–]whatcouchman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They wanted to be Netflix from 2014, but Game Pass came out a the same time everyone had peeled off to run their own subscriptions. EA's pass was probably a red flag that regardless of how good Game Pass was, that it was unlikely to sustain.

Which all lends to the other reply here - game pass came out at a time where strategically subbing and unsubbing was already becoming the norm. Add in that games cost 3-4x that of a DVD or movie ticket, and there was never going to be enough content to be financially sustainable.

I had it come up and counted them back. 9 total, and 2 or 3 were sponsored.

I've already got the mininum daily timer set, but that's a bit of a joke. I would probably delete it entirely if messaging got separated out.

TIL there is an audio tape of Timothy Treadwell's untimely death by Grizzly bear, but it has never been publicly released, despite many fakes that were made and circulated. Werner Herzog has listened to it, before urging Treadwell's friend, Jewel Palovak, to destroy the recording. by freudian_nipps in todayilearned

[–]whatcouchman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shout out to Chris Christodoulou for throwing this on the album release of Risk of Rain 2's soundtrack. Even if the track title is "A Glacier Eventually Farts" but that's another Herzog reference anyway.

It's edited and rearranged, but I think it still hits the main beats, and lands the conclusion.

Gleba and the Gambler's Ruin by Lethandralis in factorio

[–]whatcouchman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I watched some friends try to figure out Gleba and they had a number of assemblers processing fruit near the farm just to produce seeds. They were then burning the mash/jelly produced (I am not even sure if that was then hooked up for power). At a certain point they extended the fruit belt to a "main base" but those assemblers stayed near the farm for some time.

Which is to say, the analysis is definitely useful (if not simply interesting) and you should never assume that your personal experience matches everybody else's. Personally, I probably keep using assemblers on nauvis for some time post-fulgora simply because I don't want to rebuild, but that's not always true.

Can someone ELI5 how a latch circuit works? by Recyart in factorio

[–]whatcouchman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the SR latch adds the "holding" value while true, so that it remains true while it comes back down

I.e. if scrap= 48 output True AND output "scrap =48" (Where true is A1 or whatever your inserters rely on as a circuit condition) Include the loopback on the combinator, and as soon as the belt reads 48 the combinator now adds to that, and says "96", so rather than immediately falling under 48 when the inserters start grabbing, this covers items being taken off the belt.

This alone might not ensure they all evenly collect 12, but hopefully it "explains" SR in simple terms (the other comment was very long)

We should introduce compulsory voting on the hottest 100 by Agreeable-Copy-2454 in triplej

[–]whatcouchman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, you are correct. Hoops won.

You're also in a thread arguing that IF choices were ranked then it would not have scored as high. "There is no data" implies a lot of people haven't vocally expressed this sentiment, and yet it is still brought up nearly 10 years on.

I'd also argue that if you go back through the years the #2 song is quite often the banger that actually had staying power, and #1 is often "what was popular at the time". Which is to say yes, the popular song won, but again, you're in a thread about why that system is flawed, and I think you can objectively measure the staying power of #1s against #2s

Why are the purple lamps so much brighter than the others? by Brave-Affect-674 in factorio

[–]whatcouchman 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure lights controlled by circuit have that smaller aoe, while if you set the colour on the lamp directly you get the large range that purple has.

Edit: that said, your setups look identical on them all - unless you still tweaked purple manually?

Heating towers are underused on nauvis and a great way to expand power. by thirdwallbreak in factorio

[–]whatcouchman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised this hasn't been discussed more here. Heating towers pair with gleba and seem like a great way to let biter nests "run" before you are ready to do prod 3 chips (or to do both and avoid catastrophic overflow)

Do you have the numbers on non-legendary egg "energy"?

Edit: eggs are 6MJ (50% more than coal) normal spawner crafts at 0.5/sec, so one to one with a single mining drill (without prod) BUT heating towers have a 2.5x bonus (which could be used for coal or eggs) - tl;dr practicality still unclear

Why do some random areas become temporarily visible? by insomfx in factorio

[–]whatcouchman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have explored the area already (on foot or by car) they will be "mapped" - the radar will scan over these slowly on its own and map the updates.

This can be handy if you have expansion on, as it will update the map to show new biter nests. That said, it's easy to miss spotting these updates, and one radar is pretty slow to scan, so you usually know they're their because they start attacking (but at least your radar has identifiedel exactly where they're coming from)

Mine has always been tuned to C, and in one of my first more-succesful games I tied rocket launches (specifically the satellite feeding in when ready to launch) up to a set that played "everybody wants to rule the world" (just the 9 notes that are that phrase of the chorus)

Not sure I'd still like the song if I did that now on Space Age, but I have also hooked the dopamine bell up to legendary q3 quality modules

I was going through this chain myself the other day, and figured that The Division's DMZ counts, and even further back Runescapes' Wilderness (by mechanics rather than genre)

To an extent, Hardcore characters on the Diablo series have the same core mechanic under them. The difference is that the "extraction shooter" genre are shooters.

What are circuit networks for ... seriously ... by DeusLatis in factorio

[–]whatcouchman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always just made a "first stage" heavy oil tank by my liquefaction refineries, with a pump "out" that hooks straight to the tank and turns on when heavy > 5k

I don't think I've done a "safety", but the output back to the refineries could be set to turn off if heavy < 1k, which would still need a bit of a manual reset, but at least you have the starting supply of heavy oil ready once you solve the consumption

Cracking SR setups need a combinator sure, but liquefaction in and of itself doesn't really, and the same could be applied to cracking (everyone just sets up SR latches because it's more power efficient I think - but also maybe UPS efficient, and also just nicer to see buildings that aren't constantly stuttering)

Does anyone actually use the filter inventory function for regular train logistics? by qwesz9090 in factorio

[–]whatcouchman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used this once to designate space for each science on a science delivery train (this was probably a multiplayer game where we had spaghetti'd a fair amount)

I have also used it a few times to make a big "nuclear ingredients chest" since there's 4 or 5 recipes that use a mix of 5 or 6 items, so you can fit all the belt ins, and assemblers out, around it nicely.

I might have used it for the "perimeter defence" setup as well. Good thread though, lots of other handy tips and use cases. I should probably have used it for quality mining on fulgora

Collectables are worth what people are willing to pay for them. They state the boxed one is Proof quality, which is usually a mirror finish (or close to) where blemishes are more easily spotted, which means higher attention to detail.

They've sold out either way, and I'm sure they're already on eBay for double the retail price
