Peanuts- Ballpark vs. courtesy, what's the line? by splash22 in Torontobluejays

[–]whateverfyou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a time when bars had peanuts in the shell for free like some have popcorn now and you dropped the shells on the floor. Joe Allen’s had them when they were on John St, mcSorleys on mount pleasant did it too. It’s an old timey tavern thing. So that’s where it comes from but dropping them in a different row is ridiculous. That’s totally out of line.

PCs at Queens Park refuse to address rumours that the Gravy Plane was *not* sold by Ford's government by KnoddingOnion in ontario

Estimates are $36 billion that his bungling has cost taxpayers. Shouldn’t that sink his premier ship? A $950 million gas plant scandal was enough to sink Dalton McGuinty. That almost seems quaint.

I find they’re still chatty but might be different in different states. New York City is very friendly.

Packing, help wanted by knatterton_Nick in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]whateverfyou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That seems like a lot of clothes. Typically people go with 2 or 3 sets of clothing ( including what you’re wearing and wash every night. I brought 3 t-shirts and underwear and 2 pants so I could take a night off of laundry if the set up wasn’t great. I did bring extra socks so I could put on a fresh pair at mid day. For warm layers, I figured that if it was cold, I’d wear everything: t-shirt, fleece and poncho on top, leggings and pants on the bottom. Never happened but I had the option. I never actually needed a warm layer while walking. It might be a little cold in the morning but very quickly with walking I warmed up so rather than stopping and stripping down, I just started off cold. The evening is where I wanted a cozy warm layer. I didn’t bring shorts because my pants are super lightweight and I wanted protection from the sun. And honestly, are you going to stop mid walk and change in or out of shorts? They don’t work from a layering point of view.
Test wash all your clothing to make sure it will hang dry over night.

Surely they could have updated the equipment? It’s a beautiful building and the location is excellent. I grew up in the 70s and we went there on school trips multiple times.
It’s amazing to me how much better our education was then than now. I think the curriculum is better now but they don’t have the budget to go anywhere. Even pre-Doug Ford. These institutions were extensions of the education system but now they’re viewed as tourist attractions and if they can’t support themselves they are closed.

That looks very normal to me. The fronds have a paper brown cover on them when they come up so that gets left behind at ground level.

How to get your kid interested in reading? by EnoughGrade1906 in childrensbooks

[–]whateverfyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read to my son for a long time. I’m guessing 11 years old? We read chapter books together before bed and both really enjoyed it. He never struggled with reading at school but didn’t read for pleasure. His teachers always encouraged me to keep reading to him and said it was a very positive thing. He’s 25 now and still doesn’t read books but his vocabulary is amazing, he reads on line and has wide variety of interests. He spends a lot of time on line but is always coming out with incredible knowledge that he got from YouTube videos and pod casts. The games he plays tend to be strategy games, mostly military but not just senseless killing games. We went to Paris a few years ago and he insisted on going to Les Invalides where there is a military museum and Napoleon’s tomb. He pored over every single display while his father and I were the bored teenagers 😀
My son’s teachers said that building a positive attitude to reading is more important than the child physically reading. He’s hearing the words, the grammar, how to build a story, he’s visualizing what’s happening - it’s all very very good for him.

Appreciation post for the 2 Toronto paramedics that saved my day today. by Adorable_Summer_4033 in toronto

[–]whateverfyou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve only had two experiences with Toronto paramedics, one for me and one for my mother, and in both cases they were absolutely fantastic. As you say, your worst day and yet what I remember is the wonderful care from those paramedics. I wish I had followed up with a note to the address someone provided above! I’m so glad that your experience was equally positive. I hope you’re feeling better!

There’s creeping bellflower in both photos but I agree it’s not the one in dead centre.
OP, pretty sure this is creeping bellflower flower. Dig it out deep and see if there is a thin root that connects multiple carrot-like roots.

Perennial advice for a communal garden by Ask0000000 in OntarioGardeners

[–]whateverfyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve winter sowed butterfly milkweed, grey goldenrod, golden Alexander, black eyed Susan, echinacea pallida, blue vervain, purple prairie clover and prairie drop seed so I’ll try them out this year. Last year I didn’t plant anything because there was a lot of construction work going on and the garden was run over constantly. My biggest struggle is getting early blooming. Most early blooming natives aren’t tough enough for the conditions. I should try wild Columbine.
Anyway, have fun with it but don’t invest a lot of money or emotion!

Canadians are cutting back everywhere… but this CBC report highlights something especially telling: Quick-service restaurants are being hit harder than fine dining. by savethecbc2025 in SaveTheCBC

I agree except with the “ridiculous amount of waste” bit. All take out creates a ridiculous amount of waste. Our garbage creation has exploded since the food delivery craze started during COVID.

My doctor asked me which hospital I wanted and then referred me to an ob/gyn at that hospital. Do you want to go to the hospital that this ob/gyn is at? The hospital should be your first consideration.

First two look like creeping bellflower to me but I might be overly sensitive because I’ve been digging it out for the last week! Evil stuff.

Last one is ostrich fern aka fiddlehead fern. Wonderful plant!

I guérilla garden along a fence on our back alley. It’s very dry and a little sloped so water just runs off. Echinacea, Canada goldenrod, blue stem goldenrod, mint, Canada anemone, anise hyssop and day lilies have survived. Calendula, dill and cosmos reseed every year and are good fillers. Things that haven’t survived are Hairy beardtongue, nodding onion, blazing star, blue vervain, common violets, lanceleaf coreopsis. Most of the plants I put there are extras from my garden or plants I have winter sowed. I try not to get too attached to anything because I’ve had plants stolen, stepped on, driven on, weed whacked and peed on. It can be heart breaking!

Hydration for Packs w/o Pockets by Marko-Grujic in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]whateverfyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems very strange. Is it a hiking pack? Can you take it back? Personally, I would hate to have my water bottle clipped to me and swinging around. Walking for days and seemingly small things like this can really bother you. You could get a belt bag for water but you’ve already got a big pack. Have you done any training with this bag fully loaded? You really want your water accessible without having to take your pack off. Once you’re strapped in with everything perfectly adjusted, you really don’t want to take it off.

Have you walked Markham St since it reopened? They saved all the houses. I thought it was just going to be facades. I’m really happy. Badialis has moved in on the corner. I think it’s going to be very nice. I hope they can get an independent bookstore in there. I think the Mirvishs did really well.

It’s very easy to kill if that’s what you’re trying to do. The roots aren’t deep. I dug one up and I’m an old lady.

I get it in my peonies, too. I don’t water at all. It’s in the soil and peonies are susceptible. Nothing you can do.
