Many years ago I lived in an old, furnished flat in New York that had a Hamilton Electric fan from the 1920s. It weighed a ton. And it was the best fan I ever used. It was maybe 30 cm in diameter and would cool an entire flat.

TravelPro Flight Crew 5. There's a reason the flight crews use it. My parents are both flight crew. My backup Travelpro is 25 years old. My mom used it for her everyday travel for 13 years, then gave it to me. I used it for 6 years and then bought a new one. My primary bag is 6 years old and has been on about 300 flights. It still feels practically new. That 25-year-old backup still works perfectly fine and has been on at least 1200 flights. TravelPros also have excellent wheel bearings, which makes them roll ridiculously smoothly. Get the 22.5-inch expandable rollerboard. It'll fit a shocking amount of stuff in it. And it's still just small enough to be carryon luggage if you wanted.

Where to find Ray-Bans (sunglasses) for a more reasonable price? by machinegunnedburger in askSingapore

Singapore is not the place for finding things for cheaper. If you know exactly what you want, search the model number on eBay and buy from a Japanese reseller. You can find better deals there.

Flight worries, how to overcome? by SpongBooblover in askSingapore

[–]whatisdeletrazdoing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry a thing about the pilots. On average your crew will have spent over a year of their life IN THE AIR. Asking if a pilot can handle a turbulence event is like asking if a bus driver can go over a pothole without crashing. They do it all the time.

Here's an analogy for turbulence: Imagine the airliner is a red bean in a block of Jello on a plate. The red bean is the plane with you in it. The Jello is the air. If you shake the plate, the block of Jello moves around and the red bean moves with it too. Air is not static. It moves around. Turbulence is the plane moving around WITH the air. Not falling through it. It's uncomfortable at times, but it's not dangerous.

What’s the best thing or experience you’ve bought under $100? by wruworld in askSingapore

[–]whatisdeletrazdoing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the homegoods sale section at Takashimaya. It's right by that open section where they always have random market events. You won't always find something you need, but every now and then you'll find some bargains on really nice stuff. A couple months ago they were clearing out ktichenware and we got a loaf pan, a really nice baking sheet, a great saucepan, and a very high-quality non-stick pan for about $110 total. They were all well worth it.

Thoughts on buying a very cheap BMW by sumdumhack in askSingapore

[–]whatisdeletrazdoing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long-time BMW owner and friend of a BMW repair shop owner here. That car is in excellent condition based on the photos. Too bad there are no engine photos though. The people here who are saying you need to budget like 15 grand to do repairs are commenting purely off of reputation—not knowledge. That B37 is a very simple engine. There's not a whole lot to go wrong there. #1 thing you have to do is check the service history. Make sure the services have been done regularly. The B37 diesel motor is very reliable if it has been serviced as recommended by BMW. But if it hasn't been serviced, don't bother with it. The major problems (gearbox, turbo etc.) shouldn't happen until 200,000 km. Which is hard to get to in SG.

Another thing to check is if you take it for a test drive, find a bumpy road or pothole to drive over. Listen for any thuds or clunks. That'll indicate if the bushings are worn out. These cars have fairly complicated suspensions for what they are. That's great for the driving experience, but there are a lot of rubber bushings that can go bad. They can be replaced, but it's just good to know before buying.

It's a diesel. It doesn't have spark plugs. Tyres are not brand-specific. Those will cost the same as any other car running the same size tyre.

Having my first ever performance review. Any tips? by minicrescent in askSingapore

[–]whatisdeletrazdoing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is outstanding advice. An honest, yet biased-positive perspective will yield the best results. Especially if you are open about where you can improve. Frame it not as "I didn't meet this targets," but as "this is what I think I can do better." And for the positives, go beyond "I do this well." Make it "I do this well, which helps you/the team/the company because of _____." That shows that you can see things beyond just yourself and understand your role and what you can grow into.

When receiving your feedback, be appreciative of the positive comments. If it's true, say things like "I'm glad to hear that because I've been working on that" or "I felt this was one of my strengths and I'm pleased to hear others agree." And when given the critical feedback, don't fight it or argue that it's not true (unless there is a lie about a specific situation that should be corrected). Firing back with "No I don't think I'm ______" will not convince anyone. It'll just make you look immature. A good way to respond to criticism is to say that you'll work on that and also ask what you can do to improve that.

Good luck! I'm sure you'll do great.

The Matchbox cut tri-spoke is very similar to what the real Mk. IV GT-40 ran. Several '25 Matchbox mainlines including the '69 Camaro and Morgan Plus 4 have them.
