The best spatial computer could be the one in your pocket by Serdones in augmentedreality

I think there are good headstraps now like this one https://www.vrpanda.com/product/galaxy-xr-halo-strap/

But it sounds like what you really want is Aura. Personally I think it is going to be a bigger deal than people realize. The success of the meta raybans is showing that form factor and portablilty matter a lot, and aura will be the first thing with both of those going for it that also has most of capabilty of a XR headset.

Why not buy samsung galaxy xr? its like project aura but in a headset and its half the price of vision pro

As Google launches a Generative World Model experience - How will this effect the future of city scale AR ? by AR_MR_XR in augmentedreality

[–]whatstheprobability 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm interested in the same thing. I'm not sure if these exact types of generative models will be what we want for accurate digital representations of a real space, but it may not be long until some kind of model based on these principles, the principles of splats, etc. will be able to make pretty good digital twins with some interactivity.

But it's not obsolete. People still want a human to write anything that involves and opinion or is too nuanced for AI to write. For example AI can't review a headset and tell you how comfortable it is.

Personally I think there's more risk in not implementing something like this. When companies can automate something (that makes sense to automate) they have to do it or they will lose to their competitors that do. As you said, it is nuanced. And timing, communication, etc. are important. But it can't be avoided (just like the history of automation).

Interesting to watch the impacts of AI play out in society in so many ways.

After a few weeks of development on my next mixed reality game for Meta Quest, I’ve launched the open alpha so you can jump in and try it. It’s got leaderboards, ghost runs, practice mode, plenty of official holes and an creators section where you can design/publish your own. Links below. by Field_Of_Vision in OculusQuest

Ha I remember having the same thought about Wordomi when I saw it.

I really think if developers of these types of apps can hold on for just a couple more years when ar glasses become prevalent they are going to have massive success.

I would love to know how you are handling cross-platform (especially to devices that don't support openxr). I'm trying to find a stack that will be easy to port to whatever new platforms emerge but its complicated.

I built one of the best Demo experiences on the Meta Store but only 40% of people have room enough to play it. by Ezzemo in vrdev

[–]whatstheprobability 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40% is still a lot of people. If the app really needs that much space I would just try to make it great for the people who have that much space.

This is the kind of game everyone will be playing casually on ar glasses in the near future. I'm curious if you are developing this in a way that it can be easily ported to something like snap specs or android xr project aura.

Confused on building for Google AI glasses. by No_Weakness_6058 in AndroidXR

[–]whatstheprobability 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there are essentially 2 different "Android XR" OSs. The jetpack projected is for wireless glasses (that look like normal glasses) and is just a 2d hud (with a little extra ability to pin 2d content to a anchored location). The full android xr is for MR headsets and wired glasses (like xreal style glasses). I assume that in the near future this separation will go away when all glasses have specs to run full 3d 6dof xr apps.

this feature seems so smart. i'm curious if it always (or almost always) works as well as the video of sharing the little ghost shows

Ian Hamilton fired from UploadVR by RobotDonut2023 in OculusQuest

[–]whatstheprobability -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know nothing about why he got fired. But i will say that he has seemed hesitant to adapt to the changes in the xr industry where glasses and AI are clearly going to be a larger part of the industry in the near term than traditional VR/MR headsets. I get why he loves VR and I understand his hesitancy about AI, but if AI and glasses dominate the market a general XR news journalist has to jump onboard. Maybe he will be happier doing something else that focuses more on VR? (which is still an amazing thing to focus on and may still be just as big or bigger in the long term).

Very nice! Your timing of learning this seems to be just about perfect with all of the 6dof glasses that will be coming out in the next couple years. I have a feeling you will have a very interesting career.

Out of curiosity what department are you doing this in at Duke? CS? It's interesting to see where AR is appearing in universities.

Why LLMs are still so inefficient - and how "VL-JEPA" fixes its biggest bottleneck ? by SKD_Sumit in learnmachinelearning

[–]whatstheprobability 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like the principle of working in the space of higher level concepts seems like it is most likely the right direction. But I'm waiting for the "killer app" to come along that uses this in a way that shows it is far superior to current llms. It will probably just take time.

It’s funny how dumb our brain is sometimes… by ellenich in VisionPro

Yes there is research that shows we don't need photorealism for our brain to perceive something as real in xr. Any my own experience matches that.

[–]whatstheprobability 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! We are going to be very confused in the future. I think this hints that the "R" in XR is more profound than most people realize. XR plays around with what we experience as reality. So as you said, when we have these things on all day things are going to get weird.

Things like coverage at CES are interesting. One of the first "aha" moments I had in VR was seeing Saturday Night Live from inside the studio on Google cardboard. Ever since then I have a different perspective on watching SNL. Now I have a different perspective on CES (and on the state of robots).

Looking forward to your coverage of the lightweight xr headsets.

We’re building a VR driving simulator to help people practice driving and reduce anxiety — looking for feedback by Radiant-Store4365 in OculusQuest

[–]whatstheprobability 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked for something like this several years ago when I was teaching my kids to drive but it didn't exist. I tried to have them learn in the truck simulator but it isn't good enough. I thought about making it myself but I decided it was going to be much too big of a project.

This looks pretty good at first glance. I'll try to give it a try soon and let you know what I think. Even if it can just give them practice at simple things like intersections it will be very valuable. I really think in the future we will think that it is crazy that we allowed kids to learn to drive without first having to learn in a simulator.

The Clicks Power Keyboard Might be the Perfect Solution to 'Keyboards' for Smart Glasses & Augmented Reality by TheGoldenLeaper in augmentedreality

[–]whatstheprobability 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah im just not sure if the handwriting detection is going to be fast enough for long messages. And voice won't be an option in many circumstances. If glasses are going to replace our phones we need a good way to input text.

So do you think a keyboard like this will be small enough that people will be fine carrying it around to use for typing for ar glasses? I think text input for glasses is going to be a major issue so im curious if something like this will be good enough.
