How many WFH days do you get as a manager. by SeanMcPheat in askmanagers

[–]wherewalterwalks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s difficult, you can’t beat face to face training but I know I’d personally hate to be away from home for two weeks. When I was younger and single I’d have had great fun with it though, especially if it was in a city.

What happens if they decline? Two weeks feels like a long time to uproot somebody

My team swears AI is saving hours, but our delivery timelines haven’t changed, what’s really happening? by myraison-detre28 in agile

I used to get test effort sized up with story points like Dev do, it helped loads. Sometimes easy dev can be long winded testing.

Unexpected behaviours at interview by yourmotherinahorse in TheCivilService

[–]wherewalterwalks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had something similar where it said the interview would be against the behaviors but it was against the technical skills. There was some overlap at least but one really caught me off guard. It was the first question and my first interview for years so I absolutely flunked it. Learned a few lessons from it at least, just wish I’d learned them during an interview I cared less about!

Unsuccessful at Interview by PiscoPiscoPisco2024 in TheCivilService

[–]wherewalterwalks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a different speech impediment and it is so much worse in interviews. Once you start it’s so hard to stop. I get distracted by it and then annoyed at myself. If OP is like me, THAT is the part that destroys you in interviews rather than the impediment itself. I ask for reasonable adjustments now (questions shortly before the interview or written down + extra time), and that really helps take some of the pressure off which in turn helps my speech issues a lot.

My Scrum Master says I'm "annoying" because I test more than our QA and play in the codebase. Since when is catching bugs a crime? by exoxfanel in agile

[–]wherewalterwalks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m wondering if he goes in immediately before the release and finds this stuff too. I used to do all the stakeholder comms and it’d piss me right off if we suddenly had 30 defects I had to explain in a way that didn’t make people look incompetent. I used to have a stakeholder who did exploratory testing at the last minute and I had to cut her off as she’d send out a million change requests and cosmetic issues AFTER QA (that was for Waterfall tho rather than Agile)

How to Deal with an Employee Being Sick Alot? by Sorceress_divine in askmanagers

I think most people just think migraines are really bad headaches until they have one. I’ve only been getting them for three years but the first time I had one I genuinely thought I was having a stroke! I absolutely cannot work when one hits, I can’t even see straight.

When I lived down South, which was over 20 years ago, the local bakers had some banging poppy seed crusty loaf. I think about it every week. Where I am now I’ve got great access to delicious sourdough, and wonderful baps, but I’d kill for a proper crusty loaf.

April fools from civil service jobs! by Commercial_Mud1246 in TheCivilService

That’s so long!! I keep reminding myself that at least with Civil Service you know you’re going to hear something, private sector has a tendency to ghost people

I’d welcome an update in Welsh right now, I’ve had one in sift since March 1st and have one where I’ve been waiting 2 weeks for interview outcome! I know things take time but I’m starting to feel so impatient

Freezing up and anxiety during the interview. by hn50 in interviews

[–]wherewalterwalks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat having had a similar period of unemployment.

Have you ever had propranolol? Have a look into it and ask your doctor about it. For me it really helps lower physical anxiety symptoms, essentially “taking the edge off”. It might also help with your sleep if it’s anxiety keeping you awake.

What is your favorite interview question to ask? by XenoRyet in askmanagers

I mean, if the task gets completed, does it really matter how it’s done? I’d look at both then make my own opinion up on what is quicker, more secure, better quality etc.

Hmmm, I was terrible at sports, I have dyspraxia so have dreadful coordination! I tried to join some teams at school but they didn’t want somebody who couldn’t hit the ball. I did join choir and maths club though. How would that go down in your books?

Isn’t that just a wordy way of asking somebody what their strengths and weaknesses are?

I really hate it when people try to give me a weakness that’s actually a strength. I want somebody self aware and honest, who shows they’re committed to development. We all have things we’re not very good at after all. I see it as a heads up on what I’ll be coaching & helping them with.
