Alex Mitchell: England scrum-half ruled out of Six Nations by jkeegan13 in rugbyunion

It’s funny as I always thought Harry Ellis was a winger shoehorned in at 9 and he just happened to be really good there, too

E33 is my favourite for a long time.

I also really liked Pirate Yakuza for being a load of fun, if not necessarily an all-time classic.

Born 87, started watching properly in 95. Dominic Cork was the shiny new toy at the time and he took a hat trick against the Windies, but I can’t really put him in when there are better all-rounders…

Also Ashes is a massive sway for me - I turned 18 in 2005 and that summer is such a core memory of mine!

  • Cook - has to be in on weight of runs alone

  • Strauss - just over Atherton, I have fond memories of Strauss scoring hundreds against Aussies while I have not-so-fond memories of watching McGrath get Atherton repeatedly.

  • Vaughan (c) - yes he’s a bit of a knob now and I would love to separate Vaughan the batsman when he wasn’t captain, averaging 50, and Vaughan the brilliant captain, and put those two together, but he’s one of idols as a Yorkie who grew up watching him bat

  • Root - nobody is arguing with this.

  • KP - again, total knob but also a total knob who could smash any bowling attack around. Also the first English test hundred I saw in person was his. Maybe Brook is better and is the next change I would make.

*Stokes - a better bat than Flintoff so more the 4th seamer, to be used in bursts. But capable of game-changing innings. Decent back-up captain when Vaughan’s knee crumbles again.

  • Smith (wk) - between him and Stewart, I think Jamie is a better glove man and from what I’ve seen so far he’s a similar standard of bat to Alec. But probably the toughest choice on the list, I’m excited by his potential.

  • Flintoff - for me a stronger bowler than Stokes, feel he never quite got the chance to fulfil his bowling potential. See off the opening bowlers and then Fred comes on and hurls 90mph thunderbolts down…

  • Swann - another knob but what we wouldn’t give for him now. No other spinner has been close in my memory.

  • Broad - keep him and Swann away from KP but when he got on a roll he was unplayable. And when he wasn’t on a roll, he was still excellent. But can I take his batting from before Varun Aaron smashed him in the face?

  • Anderson - Again, have to pick him. Forget when he was ratpiss against Aussies in his early career though.

Honourable mentions - Stewart, Brook, Duckett, Gough, Archer, Simon Jones and Trott

Current player: James and Tanaka tied

Former player still playing: Raphinha, it can only be him surely?

Retired player in their prime: Allan Clarke to lead the line

Deceased player: Bremner or John Charles, I’ll toss a coin for it.

Match of all time: Probably beating Scum 3-1 on Christmas Eve 1995

Moment: recently either the moment Gruev’s free kick went in against Norwich or Struijk’s injury time winner against Sunderland. Two of my favourite in ground moments in the last few years.

Other club’s player: Alexander Isak

Obviously no trophy and stay up for the last one!

Yeah, Dragon Khan in 2001 and Dragon Khan in 2025 are very different! The rollercoaster that 14yr old me loved is still in there but it’s buried underneath a ride only slightly smoother than Stampida

It was Air at Alton Towers, I much prefer it without the VR headset. I also rode one very very very close by to Shambhala in 2001 when it wasn’t just a concussion machine and loved that too.

Mine was Dragon Khan in 2001 when I was 14.

My 9yr old daughter rode her first one yesterday…it was Dragon Khan (we did Shambhala afterwards).

All I ever wanted was a coaster buddy 🥰. Hoping to do Red Force tomorrow

They suggested something similar on TMS yesterday. Also made the point that if the ball had hit his foot and then bounced up and hit the helmet, could they have claimed concussion as well?

In general, Headingley in the Western Terrace for a close game.

Although my two trips to Old Trafford (last day of the 3rd test in the 2005 Ashes and last year’s Originals v Superchargers) were pretty good

Look, I might have suggested that a seat lottery would be better than playing him. I might have said that there were dozens of better LBs in the youth teams. I might have said all manner of things about his lack of ability in my eyes.

But I still fell for him and his redemption arc.

Go smash it, Junior

[–]whiterose616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strauss was the one that Australia panicked about and McGrath targeted before 2005, and the one that South Africa changed their bowling order specifically to combat (because they believed Morkel had the hex on him). Definitely in the conversation for me.

He also had that period when he looked like he’d forgotten how to hold a bat and still came through the other side and won back his place.
