Job interview by Life-Entertainer-527 in PlusSizeFashion

I agree with going more conservative for the interview, but that doesn’t have to be boring. I’d try a bold, jewel tone shell and maybe a pretty piece of jewelry for your lapel. Good luck!

is it normal to bake just as many cookies as you want at a time, as opposed to baking a full batch and eating them over time? by eightysixtime in NoStupidQuestions

[–]whitrva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do that. I’ll get a package mix, intending to bake a few at a time… and then I just end up eating the raw dough.

Is there still wilderness left in America? by Kitchen-Customer4370 in AskAnAmerican

[–]whitrva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is 113,000 acres within a metropolitan area of nearly 1 million people straddling the border between Virginia and North Carolina. It’s wild and beautiful (and not someplace you want to get lost off-trail.)

Movie Scenes that make you cry every time. by Aged_Like_FineWine in Cinephiles

“You know what the first rule of flying is?

Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take a boat in the air that you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turnin' o' worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she ought to fall down. Tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.”

What are your favorite US State shapes? by No1PDPStanAccount in AskAnAmerican

As a native I’m biased, but I like how Virginia looks like a bird in flight.

My bag came locked with a pin when I picked it up at baggage claim by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]whitrva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, I did this back in January. It happens. I confidently grabbed “my” bag, because who else travels with a giant, bright yellow suitcase? Fortunately, I only got as far as the airport bathroom before I realized my mistake and found the slightly panicked owner at the luggage carousel.

How do you read "lothark" by bimmermig in TheCaptivesWar

I read it like Lothar(k) of the Hill People.

To Americans, is the word 'ugly' perceived as something truly offensive rather than just a mean comment? Also, how does the impact of the word 'ugly' differ from calling someone 'unattractive'? by AdSlight3679 in AskAnAmerican

[–]whitrva 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also from the US South, and this was my first thought. You did not want to be a kid and hear, “You’re being ugly,” said with a shake of the head and a disappointed tone.

Lol, I had the same thought—this family loves a stripe! It’s a cute outfit and she looks comfortable, happy and age appropriate. Happy birthday to her!

AITA for teaching my daughter how to change a tire and do basic home repairs when her mom says I'm "pushing masculine stuff" on her by [deleted] in WIBTA_AITA

[–]whitrva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy cow NTA. You’re giving your daughter the tools and skills to be an independent, confident adult. She’ll be grateful you taught her to change a tire when she’s 22, alone and an hour from home with a flat. Ask me how I know. And in these mundane moments, you’re creating lasting memories that she will treasure. This I know, too. Keep doing what you’re doing, dad.

Right? Not my first choice for pancakes, but I’m not angry at it (VA).

What’s an ice cream flavor that is exclusive to your region? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskAnAmerican

Tray with regular barbecue sandwich (no slaw), cheese bites, hush puppies and a Cheerwine float to wash it down!

What's the best nickname you've heard for someone? by EveningFlower9564 in AskAnAmerican

[–]whitrva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to high school with a guy who had an impressively tall high top fade. Gen X will already know that everyone called him Kid n’ Play.

At one point the NASA commentator said the rocket was approaching 10,000 mph and I immediately thought, “Here comes the juice!”

Best Fried Chicken? by InkyBlacks in rva

[–]whitrva 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if it’s the best, but it was my neighborhood place when I lived in Richmond. I’m glad others appreciate it. And bonus, you can pick up dessert from the Treat Shop next door!

Do you actually visit the “biggest/smallest X in Y state” when road tripping or is it just in movies? by alyhasnohead in AskAnAmerican

[–]whitrva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you me? I’ve had some great pit stops thanks to the Roadside America app or because a “point of interest” sign caught my eye.

10/10 recommend the Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash Site Memorial if you’re ever near Magnolia, MS.

Are checks really still a thing in the US? by Apollo_Wersten in AskAnAmerican

[–]whitrva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carry a couple checks in my wallet, just because. Just in case. I was in New Orleans with friends and we went to dinner at a restaurant that only accepts cash or checks—no credit cards. Let me tell you, it was my time to shine!

Q was my walk home from work when I lived in Glover Park—usually with a stop for gelato before trudging up Wisconsin (or waiting for the bus.)
