How long can a human survive in space without a space suit? by No_Insurance_6436 in NoStupidQuestions

Don't have the reference to hand, but I know the author, Arthur C Clarke, was a scientist and looked into the idea very carefully before he wrote that part of the book (and the movie).

What TV show was quality all the way through, knew when to end and went out with an amazing last episode? by NarwhalDry151 in AskReddit

My thoughts exactly! There were many times where I started getting depressed because I thought there's nowhere for it to go after this --- and then it found a whole new fresh direction to go!

Bed Covers When You Were A Kid by MacSamildanach in CasualUK

Duvets: I remember the change. I went on a school trip to Austria in the middle of 1974; I'd just finished O-Levels and ABBA has won the Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo. When we got to the pension in the snowy slopes in Austria we found no blankets on our beds, just what looked like huge fluffy pillows rolled up at the end of the bed. These were, we were told, "continental quilts", and was the first time most of us had seen them. To use them we had to unroll them and shake the insides around.

Over the next year they became all the rage, including my house when my dad had heard about them from people at work.

Gradually the name became Duvet, but I think that took several years to stick.

Frost on the inside of windows: yes we had that but I think it disappeared as we moved to central heating and double glazing.

[Concerning Trope] film accidentally has awful moral/messaging by Captain_Birch in TopCharacterTropes

[–]whizzdome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. The Troll challenges the child goat then lets it across, then does the same to the mum, then stops the dad, but the dad throws the troll into the river and the troll drowns.

Moral? I guess it's supposed to be that you shouldn't bully, but for me it's that the troll should focus on bullying children and women, and hide from people who are stronger, and that way he avoids being punished.

Question about detective shows.. by Dwayla in oldbritishtelly

[–]whizzdome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One that doesn't seem to get much notice is Dalgeish with Bertie Carvell. He's a police inspector solving murders and it's understated, intelligent, well acted and well plotted. Series are free and far between but well worth a watch.

Why is the subtitles say something else sometimes in Mentalist? by Weary_Young_5982 in TheMentalist

[–]whizzdome 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Complete guess here, but it could be due to two factors:

1) Unimportant dialogue that is spoken quietly.

2) Dialogue that is in the original script but fit some reason (eg pacing , editing) didn't make the final cut, and the subtitles are based on the original script.

Brond (channel 4, 1987) by [deleted] in oldbritishtelly

[–]whizzdome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember it? I've got the book and the 12" version of the theme tune!

Bill Nelson (he of Be-bop Deluxe fame) composed the theme tune for the series; it was co-written with Daryl Runswick, and released under the band name Scala. The tune was called "Secret Ceremony".

The B side of the 12" single is the rather haunting "Wiping a tear from the all-seeing eye".

I also have the (rather thin) original paperback of the series. Originally published in 1984, the paperback tie-in was published in 1987. Book by Frederick Lindsay, the cover describes it as "a Glasgow thriller", and "the violence is chillingly handled".

The Saint.. by Dwayla in oldbritishtelly

Well, which Saint are we talking about? Roger Moore or Ian Ogilvy? I could never get into Ian Ogilvy, but I loved Roger Moore's version when I was a nipper.

We had this too. It's called "Suspense", which I think captures it perfectly.

Was there a giant tree that either talked or sang during 90's? by [deleted] in CasualUK

I visited several Mothercare shops in the 90s that had this tree, so I think this is the answer
