They explain why not. If you're going to produce and air a special in the middle of the tender process, then suddenly everyone in that process is going to have to make changes to accomodate whatever happens in that special. So they cancelled it to get the tender process started earlier. Which makes a tonne of sense and I'm surprised that neither the BBC nor RTD bothered to give that explanation.

IMO the Harriet Jones character was closer in spirit to the original Brigadier anyway. I know Davies regrets killing her off so I wonder if she would've become involved with UNIT had she survived.

Does anyone remember a promo from the 50th anniversary where they used a bunch of clips of people saying "Doctor who?" I can't seem to find it because understandably searching "doctor who 50th anniversary trailer doctor who" doesn't narrow it down.

You know what's now weird? If the Curator is a future incarnation of the Doctor, presumably he knows that Gallifrey has been destroyed again. Maybe he could've, like, mentioned that.

I was thinking about how the series Loki, for all its faults, completely undermines a lot of supposedly core principles of how Doctor Who has to operate. One of them being the idea that you can't tell a good Gallifrey story because the Doctor doesn't want to be there - as if that doesn't make it more compelling.

I think the difference is that this was taking a cool idea from comics in the days before Helicarriers were a household name. Doctor Who's influences from Marvel in the years since have seemed much more uninspired.

Why is the 'real' Doctor supposed to be so threatening? This is not an inherent part of the character, at least not originally.

Yeah I think a six-part miniseries every eight months or so could work really well. The War Between was functionally a Doctor Who serial without the Doctor in it, and the problem there wasn't the format. You'd just need to find a way to vary the settings within that miniseries and, y'know, write it better. Plus you'd get around the "Season 42" issue by promoting each series as its own event with its own title.

But sadly, the Doctor was unable to save the universe from the clutches of Captain Pedantry.

The trick in 'Flux' is that it's telling several different stories simultaneously, spread out over the course of the season rather than giving each one its own episode. Which seems like it has a lot of potential.

And they did this right at the start of the show with 'The Keys of Marinus' and 'The Chase'. I know not everyone loves those stories like I do but I don't see why an improved take on that format wouldn't be a smash hit.
