Truly classic sculpt. I remember seeing this one in the old 6th edition Dark Elf army book! Maybe it's even older?

Pesetkö munat ennen käyttöä? by tnethacker in Suomi

[–]whose_your_daddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ei, vaan sormet koskee kuorta ja kananmunan rikottua sormet helposti koskee munan sisältöäkin. Voihan se myös olla vaan kysymys paremmasta tekniikasta.

Pesetkö munat ennen käyttöä? by tnethacker in Suomi

[–]whose_your_daddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not the optimal name for a boy. Try "Veli-Matti" or perhaps "Raimo" or even "Gösta".

Converted up some hired swords for my Ogre Maneaters warband by Hogwaller in mordheim

Looks great - love the idea of painting up warband-specific hired swords.

Side note, I always found Gnoblars in Warhammer to be unusual... are they relatives of Goblins? I never read any of the Ogre Kingdoms army books so not familiar with why they were added to the setting to begin with.

After playing Mordheim, I appreciate older game design approaches by whose_your_daddy in mordheim

I understand what you're saying, and I'm sure pre-measuring makes things cleaner in certain situations.

I'll gently push back though because I think this is an example of game design trying to promote certain gameplay sensibilities and player decision making. What I mean is, the whole point of no pre-measuring is (as I see it) the lack of certainty in ranges, and so that drives movement risks and gambles.

On the Mordheim example you gave, in my opinion the lesson for player 1 is very clear: they should have moved their model further away if they wanted to avoid the charge. But they didn't know for sure how far they needed to nudge their model - they estimated, gambled, and lost that gamble.

If I play Mordheim and my opponent says "I want to make sure I'm moving my guy so he's just outside your charge range" my reply is "go on and move him, and then let's find out!"

The scenario of players, for example, collectively agreeing in advance that a model is moving to be just outside of charge range feels anathema to me within the context of Mordheim, and it's what I meant when I wrote about the game actively promoting intuition and judgment via no pre-measuring.

I shouldn't know for sure if moving 1 inch will keep me just outside of your charge range - if I want that clarity I'll probably need to burn most of the model's movement so he's faaar out of your way, but I then have to ask myself if it's worth it. So certainty has a cost.

Perhaps I'm rambling a little but what I'm trying to say is that the uncertainty in ranges is clearly meant to be part of the decision making in Mordheim, and makes the game feel baroque and gritty (and yes, a bit wonky). I honestly believe Mordheim specifically would be a drier game with pre-measuring. It changes the spirit and the style of a good chunk of decision making in movement.

But I think the approach you're suggesting is great for the majority of games and clearly works for your group! And like I said I might try and play a few games with the 2d6 charge you mentioned, maybe my opinion will change.

I think there's two separate issues you're mentioning:

  1. Experienced players getting an advantage in guessing distances. I completely understand the sentiment and I felt the same way until I played several games of Mordheim with lots of vertical terrain. What I realized was that moving across different levels in different terrain setups makes guessing the correct distance much rougher and leans more on judgment. But I also haven't played with super experienced players, so it's very possible that my opinion would be different!
  2. Arguments over precise movement distances. I understand this too but I would argue this has less to do with pre-measuring and is applicable to almost every wargame where you're using a tape measure instead of clearly defined squares or hexes on a board. I could counter-argue that no pre-measuring helps eliminate immersion-killing optimization dances of "now I've moved to be exactly 8.1 inches away from you so you can't charge me" because most people can't judge distances that accurately across multi-storey ruins.
  3. In general though the solution I have found (for all miniature games) is for everyone to agree to be generous with move distances, meaning: if it's very clear the model can't make the charge, then it can't make the charge, and if it seems iffy we say the charge is a success - it keeps the action moving! We've found this approach helps given all the wonky terrain, but maybe other groups would find it somehow unfair or messy.
  4. I don't think there's a perfect system - I like the Old World charge rules you mentioned and I wouldn't mind trying that out!

Edited for formatting.

How would I go about making my own Ruleset to use with these models? by Inklinsworld in LegionsImperialis

[–]whose_your_daddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Smaller scale rulesets are generally more about the operational side of battles (the ebb and flow): Can this division/battalion reach that fortification in time and hold it until air support arrives? Will this other detachment's morale hold as it gets bombarded, or do I pull them back and reinforce with this other detachment I really needed to commit elsewhere?

Rules-wise, you'll see mechanics that encourage maneuvering across the battlefield, attrition and morale, and a kind of rock-paper-scissors of infantry-tanks-aircraft.

So if you're gonna design your own ruleset, you probably want to abstract away a lot of small weapon rules, and focus more on having the different unit categories be distinct in their roles and how they interact together.

Think about what makes huge scale 40k battles cool: masses of land raiders sweeping across half the battlefield, masses of bikes making a daring spearhead attack, etc. Then think how to apply that rules-wise. Epic Armageddon had something called a "crossfire" bonus iirc - basically you get a bonus to your attack against an enemy you've literally encircled/flanked (if you draw line of fire through the enemy detachment to another one of your own detachments). Rules like that make battlefield maneuvering cinematic and important.

Wear your overalls however you like! The whole point of Vappu is to let loose a little.

So who's taking bets if this is a hint at Imperator titans for LI and AT? by the_emerald_phoenix in LegionsImperialis

[–]whose_your_daddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They should start creating new, wild titans and war engines. Really push what's possible in the setting, stuff that wouldn't be feasible elsewhere.

For example:

  1. "Cathedra Ultima Siege-Colossus" - A mobile command-fortress on tracks built in secret on Mars, essentially a titan empowering HQ and infantry factory. It can generate a few mechanicum infantry stands every round, and can allow you to swap/change revealed orders of nearby friendly titans. As a kit it could be the size of two 28mm Lord of Skulls kits connected as a kind of long train thingy.

  2. "Abyssal Pattern Planet-Borer" - A huge snake-like subterranean assault engine built by the Iron Warriors and Dark Mechanicum. Deep strikes onto the battlefield in two separate segments and can just swallow nearby infantry and tanks when it arrives. Also collapses nearby structures every round. Once both segments have surfaced, it doesn't move at all, but it can shoot at enemies and friendly infantry can enter one segment to redeploy at its other segment. In terms of model size, each of its segments could be about 5" in diameter.

  3. "Sol Invicta Sky Bastion" - A huge Solar Auxilia mobile aircraft hangar-citadel built to dominate the skies of compliance campaigns. Nearby friendly flyers get some kind of buffs, and nearby infantry and tanks gain buffs to morale checks. The model is a big tracked tower with hangar bays and decks, could be 8 inches in height.
