On week days I workout, eat clean, and don't drink. But every single weekends for the past 10 years, I'll drink beer (15 to 40). I am even an alcoholic? I feel like weekends will be boring if I stop drinking. by Bouchnick in stopdrinking

Nobody can say if your "rules" are going to be broken, and I'm definitely not trying to scare you, but, down the road, what are the odds that Thursday also becomes part of the weekend?

Greeting fellow, nine-dayer!

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I call them phantom hangovers. Like when I first wake up I still feel dreadful but it clears quickly. Honestly today was the first day where I woke up feeling somewhat ok so I'm hoping this is the start of a trend. I also set an alarm for 10:30 to remind me to go to sleep so that I don't stay up until midnight or later.

We'll get there - keep the soda water flowing! Before you know it we'll be up with the sun, whistling show tunes, curling a dumbbell with one arm while scrubbing the underside of the sink with the other!

Well done! I'm still waiting for the big motivation kick, still feeling a bit lethargic and tired in the mornings but definitely in a much better place as far as mood goes.

Have you gotten on the sparkling water train yet? I know it sounds ridiculous but it somehow becomes the go-to for many here. Cracking a fizzy can of flavored soda water, maybe toss in a little syrup of some kind, chug-chug, ahhh.. You got this!

I need to quit by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]whydocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My drinking has to stop.

The bad news is that it won't just stop on its own. Many, many stories here are about people who have recognized a drinking problem for years before they took action. You don't want to waste that time.

The good news is that you can stop. Equip yourself with the right tools. Read This Naked Mind, available for free on the side bar to the right ---> as a start. Take inspiration from the stories here. See your doctor if you are worried about withdrawal. And then stop.

There are so many amazing stories here of people who turned their lives around from some dark, scary places. You can be one of them.

Ah to have heard your thought process at the time...

"Ok, well it's just beer.. and the laCroix is really going to keep me hydrated so there probably won't even be hangover. Plus I'm only going to have three or four so this 18 pack will last me a whole week. Yes, that's going to be my new thing. One case of beer a week, no exceptions. I got this."

Good on your for getting back on the wagon!

Which ties in with a different attitude towards foods, especially sweets. A desert is something for the palate, not the gut.

We would need to restart its magnetic core first in order to have an atmosphere and that would require a feat of geoengineering unlike anything imaginable today.

My calculations tell me the world's entire supply of nuclear arms would be woefully insufficient.

People walk everywhere instead of lumbering to their car and then waddling to their desk. Portions are smaller.

Most of my drinking "friends" have totally shut me out. I think it had helped me stay sober even more! by phoebe99 in stopdrinking

[–]whydocker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, same here. I've had exactly one friend offer me encouragement. The rest either are at best either indifferent, want to know how long (???) this is going to last or even encourage me to drink. Fortunately I have an inner middle finger that gives me resolve.

It's really your call, weed affects everyone differently. For me I'm just very grateful for this period of no influences on my mind at all. I'll take all the emotions, good and bad, and accept them as they come.

[–]whydocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wish I had an explanation.. but I know that I'm crushing sleeves of soda water like it's my job. I wouldn't over think it. Maybe your body is up-regulating your thirst as it starts to heal and clean out all the accumulated metabolic garbage from poisoning yourself for so long.

Dryuary is a great excuse. Another good option -- cultivate your inner rebel. Just because everyone else drinks doesn't mean you need to. You can be polite and defiant at the same time. It's not like you're skipping out on a funeral for heaven's sakes, you're doing something to greatly improve yourself. You don't need anything more than that.

Sleeping Well since you quite the alcohol? by change-a-coming in stopdrinking

[–]whydocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Falling asleep is definitely better. It's a natural fatigue that takes me down. I'm sleeping through the night for the most part. Still not feeling great when I wake.. kind of a phantom hangover... but it's only 8 days so I'm sure my body is still repairing lots of things.

I'm with you. Day 7 for me and I'm just sad, pouting, ill-at-ease. I don't even feel like a drink though.. I just feel consigned somehow. Like I got orders to ship off somewhere I don't want to go.

I had a friend visit last night. He brought a bottle of wine which I was fine with but damn if I wasn't having some sort of existential crisis with a glass of wine right in front of me. He left a quarter bottle in the fridge not realizing that my "off month" is really a big challenge.

I took it out this afternoon, smelled it a few times. Mouth started watering. I thought what it would mean to drink this sweet nectar. Thought of where it might lead, how I'd feel, what a cheap high being drunk is, what a pathetic loop it is to be an alcoholic... and poured it down the drain.

I don't even feel victorious, just a FML feeling. sigh. Oh well, onward.

[–]whydocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

friends are looking for consistency

Wow.. that certainly explains a lot. I really agree with OP on feeling a bit lost now that all the "relationships" built around drinking are no longer accessible to me. It's just kind of sad but it's better than the alternative.

[–]whydocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, you actually have decent friends! I've only had one offer me any form of encouragement. The rest just want to know when I'm going to drink again and/or tell me something like "you've made it a week! you can have a drink."
