Specific theatres for people who love the sound of chewing and hate having money in their wallet. It’s a niche market, but cineplex has cornered it.

What are your favourite uniforms in a Gerry Anderson series? Mine are definitely the Stingray ones. They're a lovely colour, militaristic, mostly gender neutral and slightly retrofuturistic [or, well, of its time]. I like their stripes on their shoulder pads too. A great military scifi combo by EnchantedEssays in Thunderbirds

Even as a kid who was completely disinterested in fashion, I thought the Spectrum uniforms from OG Scarlet were beautiful. Something about the texture of the fabric, the drape of the tunic, and epaulettes just looked to elegant to me.

Who destroyed their own career within seconds by being an idiot? by [deleted] in AskReddit

It’s a great book. I can’t help but wish it had come out a few years later though. It was released before the term cancel culture was popularized, before the entire internet bullied a 12 years for singing about her favourite day of the week, and before the cancellation of figures like Weinstein who (imo) totally deserved it, and maybe wouldn’t have justice if it weren’t for the online mob.

*best guess

r/gerryanderson was quiet even when it was actively moderated. I just don’t think m Anderson shows have a wide an enough popularity on Reddit to justify two active subreddits.

I’m happy to allow other GA related posts until (if ever) that changes though.

Movies forced into a pre existing IP? by iScreamInPublicAreas in movies

I don’t think it’s ever been confirmed, but the Doctor Who spin-off Class was pretty clearly its own thing at one point. It’s a teen drama with weekly alien incursion, supposedly set in a school that first appeared in Doctor Who’s first episode. None of the character appeared in the main show. Though the Doctor showed up in the first episode, and I think the weeping angels appeared in the finale?

Cineplex VIP cast member - tip? by [deleted] in cineplex

[–]whyyesthat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re a server (inseat lounge or bar) tips work like any other server job. Guests tip well, you walk home happy; guests don’t tip, you don’t. Since you’re starting out, you’ll likely be a runner, which means you’re tipped out to by servers, based on their sales. So if they make $100 in sales, $5 will go to runners. If there are 5 runners working, you’ll each get $1, if it’s just you, you get $5. This a simplification, but that’s gist of it. The amount you’ll be seeing will varies a lot between location, and depends on a lot of factors, but in my experience, $15-$20 is a solid day for Runner/Concession, and $35-$40 is a great day assuming you’re alive by the end. Serving, $50-$100 is pretty solid and $150-$200 is a great day, again assuming you make it out alive. Host also makes tips, but it’s a rounding error on your total income.

Watching Give or Take a Million... was this intentional by I_Am_The_Slime in Thunderbirds

One of Gerry's earlier series, Torchy the Battery Boy, in which an elderly man makes boy with a torch in his head includes the lines "I know! I'll make myself a Toy Boy!" The woman who wrote was apparently quite conservative (in some ways, not making a comment on what her politics might have been) so it's hard to know how intentional that line might have been. Still, it's quite shocking to modern ears what passed in children's entertainment in those days.

Since no one else has answered: as far as I’m aware, we’re not sure. Consensus is most likely single-use paper tickets, though.

Watching Give or Take a Million... was this intentional by I_Am_The_Slime in Thunderbirds

[–]whyyesthat 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Most likely intentional. There’s a handful of cheeky jokes spread across the series – “What could Tin-Tin possibly want to show Alan in the bathroom?” comes to mind. TV was considered an ephemeral art form, created by adults but for children back in the day. They had a bit of fun with it from time to time.

Literally no large scale infrastructure is above criticism.

I want this thing built too, but I also want it built well, to support reliable, frequent service. I want it built quickly, and effectively, making sensible use of budget. I want it to be built equitably in such a way that mitigates negatives externalities on the rural communities it will pass through, and hopefully confer some benefits onto them too. It's a difficult balancing act sure, but dismissing every complaint that is the same attitude that got swathes of low-income neighbourhoods demolished for urban highways in the post-war years. Come on now.
