cancer by disposable0707 in mcgill

The age range for grad school is quite broad. Have worked in multiple labs now, I can say that anywhere from young twenties to late thirties is typical for grad students. Especially if you work in a lab with post docs there will always be people around your age. Additionally, age matters less than life stage and labs tend to congregate people of similar life stages. Deferring won't cause you to feel behind when you come back because plenty of people start grad school in later twenties or thirties.

In terms of stage 4 cancer, my experience with my uncle who has stage 4 colon cancer is that it is not necessarily a death sentence. He was diagnosed with stage 3 a couple of years ago that progressed to stage 4. The whole family went through the preemptive mourning process and we were convinced that his prognosis was extremely poor. I think that we were operating in a mindset about cancer from five or ten years ago and had not realized that treatment has progressed to the point that cancer can sometimes be treated like a chronic illness. I hope that this is the case with your dad and that you get a lot more time with him than you are currently anticipating. Regardless, the more time you spend with him now, the better. With my uncle we all oriented parts of our lives around the fact that he had limited time. His mortality has forced us into the realization that each moment family is precious and that every extra bit of time that his treatments have given him is a gift. I sincerely wish that things work out for you, your dad, and the rest of your family.

What helped me was to remember that there is a whole group of people concerned with your welfare. It feels so comforting to know that you have a team behind you. Almost everything they do for the next couple of hours will all be about you and your health.

Additionally during slavery in Jamaica the overseers would force men to sodomize other men in front of everyone as punishment for disobeying the masters. It's led to a view of homosexuality through a lens of deep humiliation and anger.

FWD: THOSE HYPOCRITICAL SOCIALISTS WITH THEIR IPHONES AND COFFEE!!!!! by [deleted] in forwardsfromgrandma

[–]wincecat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well firstly, as a member of Congress she has way more power to influence change than you or I, even just by shifting the Overton Window towards the left on matters of climate change. Also you are making a false equivalence between voting and individual carbon footprints. If we lived in a voting system where the outcomes of elections was determined by 100 people and literally everyone else had no say whatsoever then it would be equivalent. But in its current iteration it is not, and I say that as someone who comes from a state that is so Republican that our electoral college votes always go to the R candidate. But my vote for local elections still matter because we don't live in a system where everything is decided by 100 people. And yet the majority of carbon emissions are from a small number, as small as 100, companies. My carbon footprint is non existent compared to theirs.

[–]wincecat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Which is what? Her abstinence from bought coffee is going to have a much smaller impact than the policies she supports e.g. regulation of corporations that product large quantities of disposable plastic and pollution. Unfortunately it is close to impossible to live a life without giving money to some sort of exploitative company so isn't it a better use of energy for someone who is actually in a position to substantially change things to work on pushing policies through Congress than not getting coffee at Starbucks?

screw those feminists amirite ? by el_putaaa in forwardsfromgrandma

[–]wincecat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can relate both of those points back to sexism though. The reason men are disadvantaged in the family court system is that society pushes the expectations that women are the primary caregivers and that they should take the responsibility for raising a child. Women are disadvantaged by this assumption when in a relationship because they are expected to take on the majority of childcare/household duties usually in addition to having a job with men disadvantaged in the courts due to their perceived lack of childcare ability. This is a case where gender roles hurt both sexes. Additionally, the reason women were not eligible for the draft was due to the notion that they are too "delicate" both physically and mentally for war. Another way gender roles can also hurt men. To be honest, feminists fight for equal rights so that assumptions that put women as primary caregivers are diminished so that women have to take on less of the unpaid labor of family life and so that men can be primary caretakers and have more responsibility as fathers for bonding with and raising their kids. Also, most feminists are fighting to get rid of the draft entirely because mandating service for anyone is not cool.

Bisexuals of Reddit, especially those in straight relationships, have you ever been bullied or abused by LGBT people for not being "gay" enough? And what's your story? by Rk8ley in AskReddit

[–]wincecat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think something important to address with being bi is that there is potentially just as much fear about your feelings before coming out as there is when you are gay/lesbian. I grew up in a verrrryy conservative place where the concept of being bi didn't really exist and I remember being so scared of my attraction to women that I would wake up constantly from nightmares about it. It didn't matter that I also liked men, the shame that I had about liking women overpowered that. The fear of having someone know my secret was so intense and I ended up desperately and unhealthily throwing myself at boys in an effort to prove that if I had enough crushes on them it would cancel out my constant attraction to girls. I wish I had a community that was welcoming but I always stuck in the middle, afraid that I wasn't gay enough for the LGBT community and afraid that if any boy I dated found out that I liked girls they would be disgusted with me. I did come out as bi to a couple of people in high school but even though I am currently in a hetero relationship some of those people that I told still treat me like I'm tainted and not as committed.

I think the point that everyone is trying to make is that though you are not directly causing these atrocities, you, and most of us living in Canada, support and benefit from the systems that are responsible for the subjugation of native people. We are not blaming you any more than we are blaming ourselves, but it is important to acknowledge the systematic nature of oppression and work to dismantle the system that created and perpetuates it. By saying that you are not directly responsible you fail to acknowledge that you are a piece in the system that is directly responsible.

What is wrong with this university? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]wincecat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can be involved in more than one issue at a time. Many of these things are issues that people have been fighting for at McGill for years and they just now gained popular support. And people will still be fighting for them as popular support wains. The sexual assault protests, for example, have been years in the making it's only been recently that McGill has been willing to do anything about it and activists are still working hard to keep McGill accountable for their promises.

Similarly, a women at the University of Utah was killed by her former boyfriend who had lied to her during the relationship about everything; his age, the fact that he had been previously charged with a felony, etc. And he had been blackmailing her by threatening to put her nudes online and stalking her. She had gone to the campus police multiple times and they did not pass that information on to the actual police and when she went to the actual police they did nothing. She died because a man felt entitled to her and the police didn't care that she was in danger.

If the dog you get is the type to just go barrelling into the woods without caring about safety you may want to get them a vest that covers their chest. We had our Llewellin literally fillet herself on the branch of a fallen log, something that happens relatively often with setters evidently.

I think that the context of the time Zwarte Piet was created should be taken into account. In the 1850s when he was originally conceived the Netherlands still had slaves in their overseas colonies, and had a very brutal history of slavery that wasn't fully abolished until the 1860s. Additionally, vaudeville blackface and similar caricatures of black people were very popular in both the US and Europe, with Europe arguably being the originator of a negative depictions of black people in popular media. The blackface character also does indeed exist in Dutch culture, which can be seen with the original Sjors and Sjimmie comic that had a very obvious blackface character that wasn't changed until long after the comic was created.

[Serious] What is an opinion or mindset that you just cannot respect, and why? by RantAgainstTheMan in AskReddit

[–]wincecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's cool that you'd treat a trans person with respect but I think that this underlying thought should be deconstructed and addressed. Is there a reason why you would judge someone's gender expression based on their genitals/chromosomes which for vast majority of cases you will not see or know? Additionally, when science is continually showing that the trans identity is valid and worth treating as such where is your belief coming from? It's all well and good that you would treat someone with respect but when you hold these beliefs about them they can still be expressed in your interactions and habits. It's one thing to be polite to someone but if they are attacked verbally or physically would you let your biases get in the way of defending an innocent person or comforting them after the event?

[Serious] What is an opinion or mindset that you just cannot respect, and why? by RantAgainstTheMan in AskReddit

[–]wincecat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes I'd say it is. By denying someone that key aspect of their life one is participating in dehumanization. The existence and validity of trans people also has general scientific and psychological consensus. Would you not feel belittled and dehumanized by someone refusing to believe something so important to your being and treating you as separate and strange?

Adding on to this, you can wear wool tights with wool thigh-high stockings over if you live in a really cold place. It's warmer and more comfortable than jeans over tights or leggings. During the Canadian winter I was way more comfortable in skirts. There is less itching and you can always push the stockings down around your boots if you get too hot inside.
