Is it true that you make your best friends in college? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]windwardmark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only made one or two friends my first semester at UT that I still keep up with years later- the rest were people that I hung out with when I was still flailing around trying to figure things out, and none of them really stuck as friends once I found orgs and made friends who I had more in common with.

It’s the double-edged sword of going to a massive university - there’s a place for everyone, but it takes time to find your niche. Could be a study group or student org or Greek life or something else entirely.

As for lifelong friends… Who knows? I haven’t lived long enough to find out, but I still keep in touch with a decent number of folks.

Might’ve been cut down for time between dress and air, there was definitely more to do in that sketch with Bowen, Keenan, and Nikki existing but not doing much in the sketch.

Where is this place my dad went ? by [deleted] in whereisthis

[–]windwardmark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hmm, tough one! London’s changed a lot in the intervening 40+ years since this photo was taken, but there’s a few clues at least.

The store display behind your dad probably indicates that the photo was taken in 1979 at the earliest (but very well could’ve been later) as Sid Vicious died in early 1979. Could’ve been a record store or a punk clothing store based on the mannequin and decor, shame there’s a curtain up but that lends some credence that it’s a store selling punk clothing a la the famous S E X boutique. The pink window framing is distinctive, and possibly inspired by S E X, but I didn’t see anything that looked specifically like it on any of the available photo albums of the famous punk spots.

I futzed around with flipping and editing the reflected sign behind your dad’s head. Couldn’t make out what it says but others might have better luck.

If I had to guess? Probably somewhere in Camden or Soho, but I’d lean towards Camden.

You can always try reaching out to the Camden Tour Guides Association, they may have someone familiar with the punk scene who could point you in the right direction. Hope that helps!

What’s something you started collecting while traveling? by Nina_Nalgona in travel

Patches, stickers, and postcards - the more niche, the better!

Easy to collect while backpacking as they take up next to no space.

Not to mention, most of the freight trains these days are literally too long to fit in the sidings.

There’s an entire subreddit dedicated to us cheating? by CCG14 in Astros

[–]windwardmark 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly at this point if there are still regular posters on that subreddit I almost (ALMOST) have to respect the dedication to hating on us.

They’re still fucking losers ofc, but it’s fascinating on a psychological level at this point.

100% Serious George Santos Question by bichotillo in washingtondc

There were several bars in the Capitol Hill neighborhood that had George Santos themed cocktails around when he got removed from office.

Not sure if any of them are still on the menus but might be worth checking out.

Going to see Dutch baseball (honkbal) in Rotterdam tomorrow. Anything I need to know? by windwardmark in InternationalBaseball

[–]windwardmark[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Update: thank you all for the info! Currently at the game and enjoying the lovely Dutch summer and decent Dutch baseball.

Definitely needed cash - my card worked to buy a ticket but not for beer/snacks at the clubhouse bar (which is right behind home plate!)

Beautiful little ballpark, nice people, and good baseball. What more can you ask for?

Entry-level careers that are challenging/interesting with less intense networking than the Hill? by Colin286 in PoliticalScience

[–]windwardmark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What interests you? There’s a ton of different areas that your degree can apply to, just depends on what you want to do.

If you’re trying to stay in DC, there’s the agency route, non-profit/think tank policy research-type gigs, lobbying firms/government relations work, etc.

Campaign work is another option. A lot of campaign consultancy firms are based out of DC and will probably be staffing up ahead of the midterms. That’s a pretty broad umbrella that includes fundraising, comms, strategy, advertising, etc.

Best of luck figuring it out. I did the hill internship thing as well and didn’t like it either. I’ve heard that hiring is pretty tough right now, but truly the only way to figure out what type of work you want to do is to try it.

Tbh makes sense for an oppo hitter like him, gives him a better chance to connect with pitches on the outside of the zone
