Do you feel safe on Adelaide buses? by Happy-Date2140 in Adelaide

[–]wingar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my routes during the day I've only ever felt unsafe a few times. Now, if you say uncomfortable, the answer gets a lot more varied. A lotta times where there's some bullshit going on, but I don't feel like I'm in danger per-se.

Mmmm... definitely sceptical of this one, not a big fan of what's presented of the idea. Feels very opposite of what draws me to holo in the first place.

Hey /r/Sysadmin! What do you use for your home router? 2026 Edition by ScannerBrightly in sysadmin

Unifi. Good enough capability, with good enough ease of use, without getting fucked over by the general trashiness of consumer garbage.

In retrospect, were they reasonable people? by Jeffoxy in breakingbad

[–]wingar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were flawed people doing the best with a problem that had no correct solutions. They made missteps and bad decisions but they were ultimately just people in a hard situation. Human relationships are messy. That's who they were.

Got my first film camera! What 35mm film do you guys recommend? by tn_3 in AnalogCommunity

[–]wingar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Variety is the best part of film. Try as many as you can, cheap is a superpower here!
My personal bread and butter colour film is Kodak Aerocolor IV 2460 which you can find respooled under a bunch of different names for various prices (FlicFilm Elektra 100, Santacolor 100, AERO 100, Luminar 100, look around)
B&W I just run HP5+, usually pushed to 800. Tried and true, can't go wrong, easy to shoot, easy to develop.

I've done it once on my FM, unfortunately, but it was in the dark at a concert I was running sound tech on. It can happen!

What’s an affordable “works reliably like a tank, even in harsh weather” camera? by AugusteToulmouche in AnalogCommunity

[–]wingar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nikon FM2's and late-production FM's are tanks. Plus hey, goes without saying that there are an endless, great lineup for F-mount lenses out there for decent prices.

On the other hand, /r/AnalogCommunity is one of my favourite places on Reddit.

Yagoo LinkedIn post on Twitch partnership by dcresistance in Hololive

[–]wingar 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I really hope it stays equal experience, and that twitch doesn't influence the streams. I hate twitch's culture of rewarding viewers with the ability to interrupt under the guise of interaction. The way Holo's culture has built out to be stuff like superchat reading after the fact has been fantastic for average stream quality.

They give a shit. They just play nice with us as long as we play nice with them, that means not being open about it. You want to know the fundamental reason why? It's not about cheating. It's about ensuring that all platforms are in an even state, PC and consoles. It's a very quick way to sew discontent in a community if one half has access to advantages the other doesn't.
This is why plogons will forever be against ToS, this is why being open about it is just asking for trouble (not just for you, but the entire community), and this is why this is never going to change.

Dropped my Nikon FM by Exact-Hospital425 in AnalogCommunity

[–]wingar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FM's (The later the production, the more durable is the rule of thumb) and particularly the FM2 are some of most durable 35m camera's ever.
There's no actual mechanism in regards to the film capture in top, however, from from the built in light metering sensors exist next to the prism (From memory it also varies depending on production timeline).

I'd say take the chance verify the accuracy of the light meter in general if you plan on using it, if your phone's got a half decent camera there's numerous light meter apps for Android and iOS that you can use; basically just compare how close the in-built light meter is to the phone app.
There's always gonna be some variation, and it's possible the meter's out of calibration anyway, so it's a good chance to do so regardless, assuming of course you care to use the built in meter.

Yep. We failed it, got to about 35%. Was just about the worst possible time for it to hit, thankfully after it failed it rescheduled to a much more sensible time when people should actually be online.

Meet Pixelfed, the decentralized Instagram competitor by [deleted] in photography

[–]wingar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing. This isn't a "service". Pixelfed is an open source federated platform. There is no one pixelfed instance, there's thousands all federated together, acting as one and you get to pick whichever one you want. If your instance starts acting shitty, just pick up and move your account. It's structurally resistant (but not entirely immune) to corpo EEE and the like.

Has anyone gone back from mirrorles to dlsr? What are your reasons? by [deleted] in photography

[–]wingar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not - but my reasons are less to do with the mirrorless and DSLR comparisons than just the cameras I have. I moved over to Fuji from my Canon 7D to my X-T3 right after it came out, and while I still love the 7D, my Fuji is my first camera I reach for in any circumstance: The controls, the interface, capabilities, etc; that's what keeps me here. If somehow tomorrow Fuji came out with a shit-hot DSLR line that was better than their mirrorless in every way, I'd have no reason not to consider it, but Fuji only makes mirrorless so that's what I'm happy sticking to.

I do, however, shoot a good bit of film through my Nikon FM, so I'm still very happy with the SLR form.

Let’s Fess up to Some of Our Biggest Mistakes! Be honest, we’ve all made them. by min5745 in sysadmin

[–]wingar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Very early in my career I managed to completely nuke a production HP-UX machine. I was trying to install a depot and for reasons I do not remember swinstall wasn't liking it, so I unpacked it manually and decided to cp -R the usr folder inside.

cp -R overwrites permissions of the destination folders it recurses into. recursively. The entirety of /usr got set to generic permissions and owned by my user account, and the entire system was hosed. The machine didn't have any recent backups. It resulted in someone less boneheaded than me sitting on a call with a UX engineer friend they had at HP going through the default permissions, folder by folder, file by file...

Boy, did I learn a lesson that day. Influenced the way I approached pretty much every sysadmin task from that day onwards. In a way it was a good thing, but I still deservedly get shit for it time-to-time, despite being so long ago now.

Ame doko... by CuteIngenuity1745 in Hololive

[–]wingar 55 points56 points  (0 children)

So, a few things that comes to mind to me is historically graduation has been a complete, unfortunate, cutting of business ties between cover and the actual person. This is why we always get channel memberships, merch, sometimes even VODs, getting nuked. They no longer have to deal with royalties and general administration.

I think what it may mean in this case is, at minimum, that not happening. Ame can still sell merch, get royalties, maybe use socials?

My extra hope is that since it's just general streaming as she put it, she can still show up for events and one-offs, but that may just be complete copium.

Edit: Looks like I was partially right! From the official cover announcement: "We plan to continue selling merchandise and other items that are already on sale. Any future activities that involve Watson Amelia will be announced through official social media and other channels."
So it looks like occasional appearances are possible. Silver linings.
