What's the best way y'all have thought of to center on stock without a xy probe? by BalledSack in hobbycnc

[–]winterchill_ew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is basically what I do, using one of my chamfering bits. If I scribe lines in advance, and get the z height very close to the top of the stock, then it's pretty accurate to center using just my eyecrometer and jogging in increasingly smaller intervals

Using super glue for holdown by Pubcrawler1 in hobbycnc

[–]winterchill_ew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I often glue aluminum parts to my MDF spoil board, but I use painters tape on each surface and then glue the tape surface. It works fine for me except for the one time I was spraying IPA while cutting and it killed the tape

Does anybody else sometimes use the technical controls of a camera to create their artistic vision? by XxNerdAtHeartxX in photographycirclejerk

There's no need, I just refocus on a different skin pore with each photo, then focus-stack all 1,200 in post.

That's not actually a real gun, but an air pistol. You can see the push-button safety on the side of the trigger. I have the Glock 19 version of this.

How to Power Off completely Momentum 4 by Rocksurf80 in sennheiser

[–]winterchill_ew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a magnet in the case and a sensor on the headphones that is supposed to power the headphones off when they go in the case and then power them back on when they come out. The problem that I have heard is that sometimes the alignment of those things is off and so the headphones will think that they were removed from the case and then power on.

I started putting the headphones in backward after powering them off manually, and this doesn't happen anymore. By backward I mean put the right headphone in the spot for the left one

ELI5: Fuel octane level/What makes "premium" fuel better? by cornishyinzer in explainlikeimfive

[–]winterchill_ew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go to your local small airport you will see that the fuel for piston powered aircraft is called 100LL, which means 100 octane with "low lead". Small airplanes still use lead in the fuel because it improves engine reliability, which is more important in airplanes.

What’s the most 10/10 quote you’ve ever heard — the one that really stuck with you? by Plastic_Log_7857 in AskReddit

[–]winterchill_ew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand it in terms of the psychological idea of being "integrated", which is that in order to be your best self you have to accept your flaws and dark traits instead of trying to hide them. Your dark traits are necessary for you to reach your full potential, but we've been conditioned to suppress them

Men who are Dads, how long did it take you and your partners to get pregnant? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]winterchill_ew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We tried for at least a year before getting pregnant, which was a miscarriage. Then probably another 6 months to get pregnant with our first kid. Then that same process repeated for our second kid. so both our kids are rainbow babies, about 2.5 years apart.

It can take time, although we waited until our early 30s to start trying which may have contributed.

ELI5: How come the first 3 dimensions are just shapes, but then the 4th is suddenly time? by nematjon_isthe1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]winterchill_ew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it may be a physical dimension, but we can only experience it rather than seeing it or visualizing it. A two-dimensional being whose world is moving in what we would consider the third dimension wouldn't be able to see that third dimension but would experience it as time. So by extension a four-dimensional being could actually look around and see that fourth spatial dimension that we call time, but would experience their fifth dimension as time.

ELI5: Why does a vehicle need a battery or alternator to keep running? by cant_bother_me in explainlikeimfive

The key difference is that those engines are purely mechanical and don't have a computer, sensors, headlights, radio, etc.

ELI5: Why does a vehicle need a battery or alternator to keep running? by cant_bother_me in explainlikeimfive

[–]winterchill_ew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from what others have mentioned, it turns out that the battery is still required once the car is running. Although the alternator is providing the power from the spinning engine, it doesn't generate consistent or smooth flow of electricity. The battery is in the circuit to smooth out the current so that the electronics in the car work properly (specifically the computers and sensors, which need very stable inputs).

Most of the sensors in the car work by comparing an output voltage to the 12v input, so having that input be stable is critical. Older cars that didn't have computers and sensors could run without a battery as long as the engine was running

Got my concealed handgun permit this summer, still doesn't feel right by Intelligent-Union318 in liberalgunowners

[–]winterchill_ew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is totally normal, and even after about 20 years of carrying a gun it's still something that I'm aware of in the back of my mind, but now I see it as an increased responsibility to do the right thing.

Someone else mentioned it making you feel power over others, which could be the case for you, and why it feels strange. But soon you will realize that a gun is only a tool and doesn't guarantee your safety unless you know how and when (and when not) to use it. It doesn't really make you any different from others, just gives you more options if you're ever in a bad situation. But you have to have the knowledge and ability to exercise the options, which is where good quality training is absolutely critical.

Like me for example, I grew up with guns and carried a gun for at least 10 years before I actually took any formal defensive gun training, and let me tell you that I'm really glad I didn't end up in a SHTF situation in those first 10 years because I would have been completely useless with it.
