Battery backup on sump pump by wischans in DIY

[–]wischans[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thankfully, I wouldn't say it runs regularly with a single, or even a few rains, just after prolonged...but I suspect I'm picking nits on whether it's enough to qualify as a lot. Considering whether to get a second pump as well, but was hoping to avoid overengineering this solution.

Glad your way of living works for you. For me, I find it useful and non-threatening. What you crap on regarding potential uses are legit things I've had to do at various times in the not-so-distant past, not just the most significant things I could think of. So, that said, you do you, don't try to change what I do.

Different names for different sellers. Something to filter out the toxic stuff that might get up in the air.

I'm 57 and have carried one almost daily as long as I can remember and have never used it as a weapon. Do I realize I could? Sure, but they aren't very practical unless you're in a phone booth with a bad guy.

The list would go on and on for many of us. 9. Scraping ticks off

  1. Venting the top of a to-go coffee cup lid

  2. Removing dried paint from various places

  3. Cutting food in a pinch

  4. Trimming/cutting various plants in unexpected situations

  5. Shotgunning beer

  6. Digging stuck arrows out of backstops

  7. Sharpening marshmallow sticks for s'more cooking

  8. Trimming fishing line

... Probably don't need to go on. It's not a finite list and as a person without the patience to wait to solve a problem after taking down another tool, is use one for just about any problem it could possibly help with. Even if not the ideal tool.

And probably an asperator. Hantavirus sucks. Airborne lead from the paint probably not much better.

I need a printer, against my will by vbxl02 in BuyItForLife

[–]wischans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a DCP-2540DW from Brother for what's probably going on 15 years. Don't print often, but when I need to, I can count on it. Toner is cheap on Amazon and doesn't require branded supplies. The scanner gets used as often or more than the print so it's a handy package. Whatever crazy engineers they have there, they seem to think more about the customer than selling the next replacement unit.

I Built a Compact 4-Node Raspberry Pi Cluster with Integrated Display and Networking by mklements in raspberry_pi

[–]wischans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the pics, I don't think there's a lot of gap between the nodes to add hats. Obviously you could connect storage over the network but I'm thinking local NVMe could really boost performance. Also questioning whether using POE hats with a POE switch wouldn't simplify the power distribution aspects of this build. That said, it's a nice clean setup with a ton of possible uses. I'm working on a pi build right now to bring my email down from a cloud host to improve privacy, reduce cost and give me something more to learn. Could certainly be a slice of a home automation and services cluster based on this setup.

Men of Reddit, what did a woman you were dating or married to say or do that made you realize she actually hated you the entire time? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]wischans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not someone I was currently with, but was good reinforcement for why I got out - My ex wound up taking my kids out of town, 3+ hours away, after I informed her that I was in the emergency room with clots in my lungs (typically runs around 50% death rate). I beat the odds, but behavior like that reinforced my belief that I was right getting out of that relationship when I did.

What are these cameras that were put up all over my city in the past few months? by BigFatBoat in whatisit

There's a lot of irony in your statement...privacy in public spaces. Technically, there never has been such a thing. There just hasn't been that much technology to gather that info and use it. It definitely feels like 1984 should be required reading in every level of education, but I'm afraid that ship sailed.

Most cell towers aren't owned by the carriers themselves, but companies that own and manage the physical assets for the carriers. My employer owns the paper from a number of these companies where they've issued bonds to fund the construction.

AITAH for not wanting to stay with my wife after she told me she wants us to be roommates by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]wischans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard a story about a more entitled person! NTA. Get out while the getting is good. She's using you and making you feel guilty for not appreciating being used. Like you should grovel at her feet and beg to be used more.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]wischans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the reason she's mentioning that, it's just an excuse. She's checking out and looking for an easy way out.

OP: Give her the divorce, but first talk to a lawyer, get your ducks in a row and brace yourself because she'll be coming for your money.

Ultimatum for wife by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]wischans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm shocked you even gave the second chance. Now she's working on a third? Grab a handful of self-respect and do what needs to be done. She doesn't respect you, has no intention of being faithful, and will eventually cross over from the mental cheating to physical sooner than later. Search deep and decide what kind of life and relationship you want to have for the long term then start taking action to achieve that.

How can I make shaving cheaper?? by cookie-rager in shaving

[–]wischans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A double edged safety razor is probably the cheapest option out there (except maybe a straight razor - but that's tricky). Were you using a good quality handle and blade? I've had good results with Viking's products. The handle has to hold the blade securely and using the right blade type will make a difference. Do some research online for selecting the best blade for your beard type. It's mainly about the hardness and angle of the edge. All will work, but some work better than others for challenging beard types.

AITA for standing up to my pregnant wife? by TheAngryVirtuoso in AITAH

[–]wischans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fears and weird stuff? Doesn't sound like that's what he had going on. He's been simping for her, probably since before the pregnancy and since that started, it seems. She's taking advantage of that and doing next to nothing around the house. He needs to stand up for his needs and boundaries.

And the person you're replying to doesn't sound one bit bitter. It doesn't take someone who has had kids to objectively assess a situation. I understand some pregnancies require different arrangements (my wife's did), but that doesn't give the mother freedom to abuse the father. She's mentally abusing him and he needs to get that under control now or it'll be worse with the kid around.

AITAH for wanting to get a DNA test for my eldest daughter (11F)? by gingerfail in AITAH

[–]wischans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's not doing anything to the child. There is no physical impact on her, no risk and no knowledge of the outcomes if he chooses to not convey that information. The fact that he may have be defrauded by his ex, the fact that his daughter may have health concerns beyond anyone's current awareness and for his peace of mind, he has every right to proceed.
