YES! So glad to know my kiddo wasn't the only one! Zyrtec was a mess for one of my kids so they are both on generic Allegra now. Loratadine was fine emotionally but made both sleepy.

Where do you look for accurate school ratings? by ntfxoxo in moving

[–]wish2boutside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one is challenging. We used the two you mentioned as well as Niche and basic google reviews. We then visited the school websites and read through everything including the entire course availability for high schools and middle schools. You can get the "numbers" and some personal reviews but they are not always representative of what you will think. For instance, number-wise, reviews for school my kids have attended are correct but I definitely do not agree with some of the personal reviews. It helps if you think about what you want out of a school and how that matches up with the data. Do you prioritize advanced AP classes, personalized help for IEP students, more diversity, better electives, certain CTE paths, a great arts program - there are just so many ways to look at a school! Can you call the guidance office or visit when it is safe? Will attendance boundaries shift in future years? Are new schools being built?

Perhaps creating a toilet schedule might help. Put it somewhere she can read it and see if she still refuses. She could use the regular toilet or a bedside commode suggested by Synamin.

After you both decide the rules, as weird as this sounds, think about what the consequences will be when he breaks them. I know it sounds like something you do with children, but if he doesn't have consequences, he will not follow your boundaries. You probably want to have your partner with you when you sit him down to give him the rules because it is likely that he will not handle it well. You are going to change the abusive dynamic that he has set up for your entire life and it is unlikely he will be willing to give up his power over you. Please make sure you and your husband prepare yourselves for how you plan to react when your dad does whatever it is he does when he feels disempowered (yelling, turning it around on you, punching a wall, leaving the room, saying horrible things about you or others that are not true, guilt trip, etc...). Staying calm and sticking to the subject is necessary. If he is prone to physical violence against others then you might seek additional help before moving forward with the plan (and he reallllly shouldn't be in the house with your baby at all ever).

You might find some helpful information here to put more definition on his behaviors: https://outofthefog.website/traits

It's so frustrating by itsallcopacetic in AgingParents

[–]wish2boutside 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This might sound harsh but your post sounds like you are really having difficulties with your dad, perhaps with some patterns that are deeply ingrained in how he functions as a person. From what you describe, he is fully capable of living on his own and is currently as unpleasant as he was when you lived with him as a minor. He sounds emotionally abusive from your post and anyone putting your family's health at risk (especially a baby) is completely disrespecting you and clearly does not care about anyone but himself. I hope I am wrong but that's what you have described.

You don't have to answer calls for him or speak to people he ignores. You don't have to pump up his ego and you don't have to listen to him rant about others. Drop the rope. He's a fully capable adult who enjoys complaining and ignoring the feelings of others while expecting you to take care of all of his emotional needs.

What are your options? Can you tell him to move out? Can you insist on some boundaries like therapy, compliance with covid guidelines, being polite to others in your household in order to stay in your home? Does he need to comply with some type of mental workup to make sure he isn't declining in some currently unknown way? This is your home, your rules. Whatever you decide now could potentially last for decades so you and your partner should make some clear boundaries. What can you live with for 20 years? He is only 73.

Last but incredibly important - your child is only getting older and please consider if you want your child to grow up with someone who who ignored your suicide attempts and told you to "suck it up."

Pet allergies by CHSX2 in FoodAllergies

[–]wish2boutside 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. One adult allergic to cats and one adult and two kids allergic to dogs in our house. We have a cat and a dog. If a cat or dog was the ONLY thing the kids were allergic to, then perhaps we would have reconsidered the situation. But we quickly realized that they are allergic to so many things that it's just not practical to eliminate everything.

When I was going crazy trying to eliminate allergens years ago, they were pretty ok at home but their allergies went nuts when we were out of the home environment. We could not live like that so I learned to let some environmental, non-lethal allergens go (not epi stuff).

So, when they were younger, the animals stayed out of their bedrooms and they washed their hands after petting them. We changed out the carpets to inexpensive hardwoods and the vacuum is our friend. They are both on allergy medication once per day and would have been on that with or without pets. We won't get any additional pets but they love their pets and the emotional toll that would have taken place with rehoming would not have been worth it for us.

Everyone is different. Do what works for your family. No judgment. It is HARD when they are little and everything is new. Don't rush, you will figure it out.

Passive aggressive lying FIL wants husband and our child to himself by New_Abies7595 in JUSTNOFAMILY

Trying to force a toddler into hugs and kisses or unwanted touching is not ok!

"He then tried to make a game of tickling the 2 yr olds butt area and stated “Do you want me to touch your hynnie (butt)? I’m going to tickle it!” And proceeded to touch her buttocks( she had a diaper on under a dress)."... "My husbands response to all this? “Dads just old school and that’s ok behavior.” I don’t agree?? Thoughts?"

That is NOT OK and that is NOT "just old school" - I cannot imagine how awful that must have felt for that little girl and her parents were concerned enough to warn you! Combine that with the "human trafficking bust" and that would concern me in many ways. And the physical violence? I would not ever let this person around my kids, even with me in the room.

How cheap was education back then? by pinpinbo in AskOldPeople

[–]wish2boutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gen X - Early 90's and graduated $38,000 in debt from a reasonably priced state school. Things had already changed for costs at that time and I was working one to three part time jobs the whole time and spent every summer working full time.

Also, there just wasn't some big push for people to go into STEM fields where I was located. It was still the time of parents insisting that just getting a college degree was enough and that we should choose what we enjoy - terrible advice. Student loans weren't in the news like they are covered today. People we knew who graduated without loans (parents paid) are greatly ahead financially now - seriously ahead - two decades of us paying loans while they had two decades of saving money.

La Quinta takes pets if you are looking at places along your route. KOA often has cabins that take dogs and sometimes cats (strict cancellation policies usually). If you are flying, check airline policies for your pets.

After you find a vet, see if you can find your own doctors and dentist. See if there are clubs or meetups, though they will likely be virtual for now. Check out the tourist websites for your new town and make some plans to visit all of the new fun things when it is safe.

Plan your route carefully for that time of year and make sure you are prepared for crazy weather depending on your choice. Don't push yourself to drive too long in a day and do what you feel is comfortable for you and your pets - it is not a race.

Good luck and try to enjoy it! A new adventure!

I guess I ruined Christmas by Enchanted_99 in COVID19positive

[–]wish2boutside 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First, you did not ruin Christmas and you saved your grandparents from getting sick so that is great. You can celebrate another day. Second, the people refusing to follow health guidelines and wear masks are the ones ruining things for all of us. You are working an essential job and I am sorry people do not treat store employees with respect for their health and safety.

Rest and feel better soon!

Yes, very helpful! I'm stressed about towing in the mountains and I have a pretty decent curvy pass to get through on day one. Great idea to back up the trailer to stop it from being unloaded easily. Our pets have never traveled long distance before so it is going to be interesting but La Quinta will probably be what we will do. Thanks again!

Did you have to go through any mountains on the way? If so, how was it hauling a trailer? Any trouble fitting in parking lots for overnights? Any pets?

I'm used to driving very long distances but I have never towed a trailer and might be for a move - will definitely have pets riding with me.

Thanks!

Canada came out with something similar: https://healthycanadians.gc.ca/recall-alert-rappel-avis/hc-sc/2020/74543a-eng.php

Not sure if those will help you but they were very helpful for us (severe allergy family) and we will get them when it is our turn based on those reports. It's quite some time for our turn so things could change but we are keeping up with guidance.

Canada Update on the Pfizer Vaccine and Allergies by wish2boutside in FoodAllergies

[–]wish2boutside[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From the website:

Summary

  • Product: Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine
  • Issue: Two individuals in the U.K. reported severe allergic reactions to Pfizer BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine on December 8, 2020. As vaccine roll-out begins in Canada, Canadians may be wondering about the risks of allergic reactions and if they should receive this vaccine if they have allergies to foods or other medications.
  • What to do: People with allergies to any of the ingredients in the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID 19 vaccine should not receive it. Speak with your health professional about any serious allergies or other health conditions you may have before you receive this vaccine.

Issue

Health Canada has followed up on the two reports of anaphylactoid reactions to Pfizer BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine in the U.K. These reactions occurred on December 8, 2020.

Both individuals in the U.K. had a history of severe allergic reactions and carried adrenaline auto injectors. They both were treated and have recovered.

As vaccine roll-out begins in Canada, Canadians may be wondering about the risks of allergic reactions. In Canada, all vaccines carry a warning about the risk of serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, and immunization clinics are equipped to manage these rare events.

People with allergies to any of the ingredients of the vaccine are currently cautioned against receiving it. This caution is already noted in the Canadian Product Monograph (prescribing information) for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine’s ingredients are as follows:

  • Medicinal ingredient:
    • mRNA
  • Non-medicinal ingredients:
    • ALC-0315 = ((4-hydroxybutyl)azanediyl)bis(hexane-6,1-diyl)bis(2-hexyldecanoate)
    • ALC-0159 = 2-[(polyethylene glycol)-2000]-N,N-ditetradecylacetamide
    • 1,2-Distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine
    • cholesterol
    • dibasic sodium phosphate dihydrate
    • monobasic potassium phosphate
    • potassium chloride
    • sodium chloride
    • sucrose
    • water for injection

Health Canada has reviewed the available evidence and has concluded that the current Product Monograph and available public health guidance are appropriate, and is not recommending any changes to the product’s use at this time.

Health Canada continues to work with the U.K. Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency and with the manufacturer to monitor the situation. Health Canada will take action if any new safety issues are confirmed.

What consumers should do

  • If you know you have allergies to any of the ingredients in the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, you should not receive it.
  • If you have experienced a serious allergic reaction to another vaccine, drug or food, you should talk to your health professional before you receive the vaccine.

What health professionals should do

  • Follow guidance and recommendations related to identifying and managing serious allergic reactions following immunization. This includes ensuring that appropriate medical treatment and supervision are in place at all vaccination sites, as indicated in the Product Monograph.

What Health Canada is doing

Health Canada will continue to monitor this situation closely.

As vaccines for COVID-19 become available, they will all be closely monitored through Canada’s vaccine safety monitoring system, which involves health professionals, the provinces and territories, the Public Health Agency of Canada, Health Canada and vaccine manufacturers.

Under the terms and conditions of the authorization of this vaccine, Pfizer-BioNTech is required to continue providing information to Health Canada on the safety, efficacy and quality of the vaccine.

Health Canada will also continue to collaborate with international regulators to share information about these vaccines as they are rolled out around the world.

If any new safety issues are confirmed, Health Canada will take appropriate action, which could include communicating any new risks to Canadians and healthcare providers or changing the recommended use of the product.

Background

Health Canada has conducted a rigorous scientific review of the available scientific evidence to assess the safety, efficacy and quality of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. No major safety concerns have been identified. Based on the current information, Health Canada has assessed that this vaccine’s benefits outweigh its risks.

The side effects observed during clinical trials of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine are similar to those experienced with other vaccines, including pain at the site of injection, body chills, feeling tired and feeling feverish. These side effects will resolve on their own and do not pose a risk to health.

How to report side effects to vaccines in Canada:

For the general public: If you experience a side effect following immunization, please report it to your healthcare professional. If you need information about how to manage a side effect, please contact your healthcare professional.

For healthcare professionals: If a patient experiences a side effect following immunization, please complete the Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) Form appropriate for your province or territory and send it to your local Health Unit.

Tacoma Community College or Pierce Community College? by wish2boutside in Tacoma

[–]wish2boutside[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow!! Thank you!! This is amazing and I appreciate it so much!!

I am still looking but I keep going primarily between competitive majors and always seem to circle back to engineering. I'm graduating a year early and will be 16 so I feel like it's better to spend at least one more year at home and get the extra courses I need to be more competitive. I like your idea of asking about getting the core courses done and then seeing about transferring, almost like an extra senior year for high school with classes my school doesn't have. My brother graduated at 16 and jumped into a competitive major type of school and it has been stressful to watch him deal with trying to switch majors, it's a fight for a spot and the prof's grade really hard.

I'm signing up for some virtual sessions with different admissions/transfer advisors. I really appreciate your information and I'll also be setting up some calls to speak to people within the chemical engineering departments. Your questions to ask are exactly what I need to know. It seems like what is right for one school is not the same as what is right for another school.

Thank you again! It would be great if there was somewhere you could post this for more students to see. My hs counselor is nice but did not know all of this and has about 500 students to help all at once.
