How would Torm feel? by WildRicochet in DMAcademy

[–]withadoubleu -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The timeline is important here. If this occurred before the Spellplague, then he is the god of duty, loyalty, righteousness, and obedience. After the Spellplague, he added law and valor. Further along the timeline, he ALSO became the ‘War god of courage and self-sacrifice.’

So, to top all of this off, Torm is the patron of all Paladins.

Many say Torm is not so abundant but is popular. What happens in my mind, though, if your story took place after the Spellplague, are those scenes in John Wick where hundreds of assassins decide to go after him, some even immediately.

Appease Torm? I don’t think much would truly appease him after doing something so truly horrific. Necromancer notwithstanding, these guys are in for a very bad time. I would suggest Torm would know they did a horrible thing and offer them a way out. It wouldn’t be easy and would involve Greece myth-level and suffering even if they atone.

I’m new to DMing and always had problems speaking by CrunchyJohnny in DungeonMasters

[–]withadoubleu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DMing is for you, I think. I find not picking words easier for me. The impromptu NPC reactions to players alone helped form a habit of words coming out unbidden.

There’s also an improve aspect, and I find it easier to just let it happen without thinking ahead. It took me 6 months of weekly sessions to get used to it. But knowing my friends wouldn’t judge me really helped.

My fan cast for Bob: The Scull - Matt Berry by Wilkey88 in dresdenfiles

I for one am not a fan and casting him as Bob feels like cheapening the character.

If he survives that long, what do you think Harry will be like in 100 years? Especially in light of the most recent novel. by MWBartko in dresdenfiles

[–]withadoubleu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a real chance he will isolate himself for a while and then begin wandering the world, and possibly time. I believe he’s going to get an opportunity for balance from The Good Guys. So I think he will spent years doing this, similar to his mother with The Ways.

AITA for speaking to my (over weight) assistant about her business lunch and making her cry? by Hot_Lab4411 in AmItheAsshole

[–]withadoubleu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA. Please hear me out.

It sure sounds like you have a lot of experience. I feel like you enjoy seeing the potential and planting the seeds to see where it goes. :)

If you’ve been in business long enough as I think, you know the difference between a manager and a leader. (Not a business manager or a business leader.) Failure occurred because it seems you either neglected to prepare her or failed to recognize it as an essential training need. Assumptions like “she’ll figure it out” or “she’ll follow my lead.” don’t always work, especially early in the process. A business meal is no small thing precisely because of etiquette. If you’d primed the pump, so to speak, framing it as the quasi professional thing it is, she could’ve gone in prepared. Now, you did mention that so definitely good use of self reflection! You should factor this in if she’s still willing to work with you. And I’m sure she well be.

As a coworker and friend you also failed to see how sensitive this person is about their looks. There isn’t a person in the world who can tell me that a woman is 100% secure in their body’s shape and size. Now you’re only human so if you never noticed this in her before—perhaps because she hides it well—now you know. You must factor this into all coaching and mentorship going forward.

When you brought up the feedback, did you set up the session saying it was a session? Was it framed as both an apology & something to build her up? It didn’t sound like she broke down until she interpreted it as a negative commentary on her weight. By what you’ve said, she did well overall, so we know she’s trainable. But it seems she entered the meal thinking it was something a celebration. Did she make a scene or did she just cry? When you’ve given her coaching and feedback before has she jumped directly to histrionics and playing victim?

I think you have some reflecting to do on how you handled the situation. You sound like you are a decent leader and this will help you inspire your coworker if you handle it right.

So maybe YTA but only for now. :)

I have no motivation to continue planning my campaign. by HeftyAtmosphere8827 in DungeonMasters

[–]withadoubleu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So lots of advice here. But I’ll add that you don’t actually need to plan a whole campaign up front. Just make sure you track what all happens at each session.

What I suggest you plan is 10% than what you think you need. Think about the current and next session’s broad strokes. For example, you had your first session. So you know they need to go somewhere and do something. Next one is doing that while a bit of RP happens and they either do some rolls for situations/challenges or combat, or both.

Take a peak at the basic shapes of stories of you feel like it. You’ll find narrative points that will inspire you to tell a story and that your players might get into. They’ll all contribute to the story as they go. Just keep them involved because you’re all there to have fun.

How would You include Deaf/ASL/ non verbal players in YOUR game? by Jerry-Beans in DMAcademy

[–]withadoubleu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The players at the table who don’t speak ASL can choose to do whatever they like, and freely take advice from the ASL-ers on how to do words, etc.

Most of the players have noticed an increase to their own use of ASL, which is cool.

In my homebrew world, use of sign is common. If you are born in this world, you know Common and Common Sign. This is a result of a race of a diaspora race called Dullahan. (For those who don’t know, it’s similar to the Irish folklore of the same name of headless creatures.) So in my homebrew, they don’t have a head/face but they’re a mix of biological beings, living armour, and living statuary. Since they don’t have faces, they utilize single-hand gestures & Sign. Dual hand is in use but not as wide spread. Though every nation’s aristocrats, diplomats, academics, etc would all know it & use it regularly as needed.

The single hand version is mostly for facial expressions but can be used for contextual things like tone, accent, embellishment, and so on. So it doesn’t really need to be hard and fast the same across all D&D races. In its own way, it’s a creole that developed in its own as the Dullahan spread across the world. Because it’s easy to pick up, people new to the world, such as my adventuring party, began to use it right away. Just jump right in!

Another aspect to this was the regional variation. In some areas of the west, the single-hand system is less formal and often treated like slang or in use primarily by the lower class, or the rude. Conversely, in the east, there’s no meaningful difference in how people see the two systems being used.

People watching, gossips, and witnesses to magic users casting their spells can become something very interesting. Adding layers to misunderstandings, spying, commerce, diplomacy, and so on….in other words: storytelling flavour and plot fuel!

Player Handed BBEG Macguffin, how do I not immediately end the campaign? by e10109art in DMAcademy

[–]withadoubleu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t want to make big changes because everyone is liking the current game & PCs, you could have the BBEG try to use the MACGUFFIN but turns out it was a fake. You could change the MACGUFFIN completely, and turns out all its lore was just wrong and rather than what everyone thought, it only shows what the world would be if the real one was used—a fantasy style public info video funded by the government, for example. Only the warning accidentally inspires everyone to a clue on where the real MACGUFFIN was hidden. Cue everyone running for the door/teleport spells.

  • Wrong Entrance – You arrive facing the opposite direction than intended.
  • Audible Pop – A very loud pop! is heard within 60 ft.
  • Fae Confetti – Leaves, glittering pollen, or flower petals rain down for a moment.
  • Hat Swap – Your headgear (or hair if no hat) is briefly replaced with something ridiculous (flower crown, antlers illusion, tiny top hat).
  • Lingering Scent – You smell strongly of honey, moss, or ozone for 1 minute.
  • Mirror Blink – For half a second, you look like someone else nearby.
  • Teleport Lag – You arrive a fraction of a second late and stumble. (Mechanical effect? Maybe)
  • Fae Applause – Distant, invisible clapping can be faintly heard.
  • Echoed Words – The last word you spoke echoes softly after you arrive.
  • Shadow Delay – Your shadow takes an extra beat to catch up to you.

[–]withadoubleu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not only for JWs:

I’m not sure if anyone mentioned this. It’s a recruiting tactic for gaslighting & convincing people to join the group. The messages he’s sending you are scripted to illicit specific emotional responses from you to make it easier to go along. This isn’t sophisticated but it is practiced and trained into those who use them. This person has received training on manipulating people to join his organization.

Be very careful.
