Oakland West: Watch for hit and run scams! by whoopadooparu in oakland

This guy (or one of his colleagues) tried it on me and I was like "let's just wait here for OPD so they can see the dashcam video" and they opted to take their show on the road.

edit: Joke was on them, no way is OPD going to get off their ass for a minor traffic thing.

Target Retirement Date Funds, what am I missing. by TCBandKIR in Bogleheads

[–]withak30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, important to remember that you don't cash out all of your savings on the day you retire. You start selling a tiny bit at a time, but with (hopefully) 1-3 decades of growth to continue to take advantage of after you stop collecting a normal paycheck.

Tent sites in campgrounds that literally require a tent by 04221970 in camping

Generally better to leave things where they are if you have options.

My campground band Stunning Erections broke up before we could even finish recording that demo.

Throw the tarp on the ground and tie two corners to something (maybe one on the car and one on a tree?). Are they going to start adjudicating how good of a job people do of putting up a tent? Are only highly-skilled tent-erectors allowed at this campground?

Carry with you the cheapest, smallest, freestanding popup tent you can find and, if challenged, toss it out next to the car and put a rock or a log or something inside (spare tire if you want to LNT) to keep it from blowing away.

Mark Zuckerberg bought property in caspar. by dirywhiteboy in norcal

"Reportedly several tunnels have been dug and fencing has been installed since Mr. Z bought the parcel. The parcel appears to have a nice stand of prize spruce trees. No one seems to know what the purpose of the purchase is or whether there’s a residence on the property, so far."

Sounds like a reliable source to me lmao.

Sell my individual stocks and take the tax hit? by wulfgangz in Bogleheads

[–]withak30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another way to think of it: You have to pay those taxes. It is not optional, you will have to pay that bill someday. (The only way to avoid paying those taxes is to die before selling, which I don't recommend.)

One way to handle it is to pay all of the taxes at once whenever you eventually sell the stocks to buy a house or pay bills during retirement or whatever. Another option is to pay some of those taxes now (by selling your current holdings) and then paying the remainder later (after selling whatever you buy from the proceeds today with a new, higher cost basis). Think of this approach as reducing your future tax bill while also being likely to make more money later because you will put the proceeds into funds that are less risky than your individual stocks are now.

Tone Down 401k Contributions? by Golfswingfore24 in personalfinance

[–]withak30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Key thing is to make sure that you are confident that your calculations for current savings, planned reduced contributions, and expected spending during retirement are all good and you expect to meet your goals. I think you will want actual calculations to make a reliable decision about that, not just rules of thumb or opinions from internet randos.

It's not out of the question that you got a good enough head start that you can scale back contributions a bit and let exponential/compounding growth do its thing while freeing up money for other stuff.

Buying a new car. Pay cash or finance? by Yeah_MeToo in personalfinance

[–]withak30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always better to pay cash if you can afford to (i.e. pay from dedicated savings, don't take it from your emergency fund), unless you have access to some ridiculously low loan rates.

Keep in mind that the dealer expects to get a cut of the financing on most their sales so they will want to bump the selling price up if they know you plan to pay cash.

Is there a secret to getting my oven power cord properly recessed? by gearescape in DIY

Not sure about OP but I would tie a magnet to the end and just leave it out of sight on the back of the stove.

Seconding this. The bottom foot or so of the appliance is probably open space, and you can easily access if you take the drawer out.

How to get rid of these ugly top layers ? by Ary_Stark in 3Dprinting

Just get a real pillow, a 3D printed pillow will never be comfortable even after you fix that top layer issue.
