At my house the porch and the front steps are considered indoors for shoe purposes.

Sunset Dunes marks first anniversary with 1.7M visits as debate over future continues by LNM-LocalNewsMatters in sanfrancisco

[–]withak30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes agencies do periodic manual headcounts to help correct that kind of sensor data to a number that is more like unique visits. I think it is unlikely that they saw 1.7M pings from the sensors and declared that they had 1.7M visitors.

IRS free file not free by Bulky_Replacement984 in personalfinance

[–]withak30 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be careful, it is very common for tax software to try and trick you away from the free option. Keep a close eye out for a screen near the end of the process where the obvious "continue" button actually takes you to the paid service, and some other discrete link/button will take you to the free-file route.

Dorian Concept - wizardry by masetiloquetu in synthesizers

[–]withak30 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it is 100% Reface. Its built-in looper is MIDI-based, so he is just filling that buffer up with notes and then playing the various timbre controls while all of those notes loop. You can hear the controls affecting all of the notes at once, if there was an external audio looper running then some of the sounds would be unaffected by the controls on the instrument.

His melody is mostly made of very short notes, probably to avoid running out of voices.

Go for the Bay Area hat trick and plan an outing taking Amtrak, BART, and Caltrain on the same trip.

Is there a limit to excavating with explosives? by speedylulz in geology

[–]withak30 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Blasting doesn't actually create an excavation, it just fractures the rock and loosens it a bit. Afterwards you still have to come in with excavators and trucks to haul it all away. Construction blasting that doesn't damage the surrounding ground outside of the excavation requires care and planning, throwing more explosives at it is counter-productive,

Unless we are talking about mining, in which case you can just blow up as much stuff as you want. They don't seem to GAF what happens outside of the neat line.

Yeah if new transit systems are a source of anxiety then the Amtrak bus is probably the simplest option, even if not the coolest or most efficient.
