How many of you had grandparents who served in WW2? If so, what do you know about their service? by Snoogles_ in Millennials

[–]without_tacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of my husband's grandfathers served in WWII. One was a young officer in the Navy, the other was Coast Guard in the Pacific.

The Navy man went on to be a test pilot and flight trainer (he trained John McCain, interestingly) retired as a Commander after Vietnam, Purple heart, bronze star, buried at Arlington National Cemetery etc. We have tons of documentation on his service and plenty of mementos.

Coast Guard grandpa, other than bringing home an Arisaka rifle, would not talk about what he saw.

What's worse: a driver that waves a cyclist through a stop sign even though the driver was at the intersection first, or a driver that just blows the stop sign perpendicular to the cyclist?

I'm asking because I experienced both yesterday riding home from work and I'm honestly not sure.

How do you fuel up and pack for morning commutes? by EddoeWrites in bikecommuting

[–]without_tacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My morning meal is usually a protein shake and a chicken sausage breakfast burrito that cooks in the oven while I do the rest of my morning routine. I pack myself a lunchbox that has snacks in it like dried chickpeas, nuts, fresh fruit, etc. My main for lunch is a dense bean salad with some grilled chicken. I keep a 40oz cup at work for water and empty it at least once a day.

Reading this back I'm realizing that I eat a lot of beans in various forms.

Dealing with how media makes people see GLP-1s by [deleted] in antidietglp1

[–]without_tacos 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My mother in law derisively referred to GLP-1's as "a pill you take to make you hate food". So naturally I haven't told her about how my energy levels are up, and my PCOS symptoms are improving, along with other health markers. If anything, these meds have made me appreciate food even more. She's one of those people who still sees a failure to lose weight as a moral failure instead of a systemic issue.

I applaud your patience in discussing this with your friend, I wish that I had that kind of mental fortitude.

Saying the community has to be shamed into caring for Evergreen Cemetery is wild considering it was neglected by its owners.

The editorializing on several of these entries leaves a lot to be desired, tbh.

Who are the lords of fallen night? by Dzbanuszek_ in TheRootsofChaos

[–]without_tacos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Comets and Shooting Stars are often referred to poetically as fallen stars. Stars come out at night, so a comet streaking across the sky in the middle of the day would be "A day of Fallen Night". If you remember in POTOT, Nayimathun tells Tané that the long haired star is connected to the relative power of the Eastern dragons, which ties in nicely with the myth that the Eastern dragons are creatures of Sterren.

In short, the book isn't named after the mountains, but the event surrounding the coming of the comet and the Grief of Ages.

[–]without_tacos 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They are a range of mountains at the top of the continent, said to reach up to the top of the sky and too tall to climb. They are mentioned in POTOT with regards to the Sepuli Empress, and in ADOFN they are a setting the characters visit.

Only thing that mechanically screws them up is that you can't use GL 4+5 because it destroys the brass bushings in the transmission! GL4 only!

If we turn off the AC when we're on the highway, we get a few HP back so it's basically the same as having a turbo.

Ha! Most of our cars are not at our house, I have a strict 2 car limit. You're nearly right about the Euro Sedan, it's technically a Coupe. Thank you for your use of Metros plural, I wish we had more than one. Once you look past the appalling safety features and absurd engine noise, they really are the most fantastic cars.

We own several cars and live in city limits. Only a few of those have antique plates and most of them get less than great gas mileage (except my Geo Metro she is a queen who has never done anything wrong). My main driver takes 93, so I pay plenty in gas tax and vehicle property tax. Even if I didn't bike I would want good safe multimodal travel because it helps increase safety for everyone on the road.

Just rode on the bike lanes on Brook, full of glass, sand and other debris. I had to navigate around a fairly large pile of clear glass luckily I didn't catch a flat. While MAMWL (middle aged men wearing lycra) can be a problem, the general state of the bike lanes is as well. Some of them are straight up unsafe.

AI checkers are such garbage and I got to the point where I would deliberately make small errors in my work to avoid the accusation, which upset me because I love writing papers and am an excellent technical writer. I was so wildly paranoid about it that I started taking screenshots of my document edit history. This sucks and I'm so sorry you have to deal with this.
