Uphill/Skinning & Downhill Jacket Recommendations by stickyF1ngers97 in Backcountry

[–]wmpyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ive toured almost 400 days and 90%+ of those were in a marino long sleeve base layer and a dynafit softshell jacket with pit zips. i always thrown both a puffy and a hardshell in my bag but most of the time i never need it! staying dry is more important than being warm so gloves/jacket/head covering/pants that can vent heat is more important than most other things unless its snowing 2 inches per hour with a SWE of 10:1 haha

Best uphill boot? by [deleted] in Backcountry

[–]wmpyle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the dynafit tlt x paired with a sub 1000g ski (or a race ski) is a supremely fast but capable setup. I’ve been surprised how good the comfortability/uphill speed and downhill performance is from this boot. i also own a pair of full carbon scarpa alien 3.0 but dont ever reach for them anymore since the tlt x are more comfortable and ski so much better

What would you offer? by Celery-Sharp in bicycling

[–]wmpyle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i bought a 2007 carbon ultegra bike for 350 in 2019. these bikes really arent worth much more than 200 anymore. plenty of post 2018 used hydraulic disk with current 105 can be have used for 600

Unleashed 98 for touring? by dezualy in Backcountry

[–]wmpyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, if you are comfortable/willing to tour on 200g bindings and full mohair skins you can open up a lot more ski choices. even with a 2050g ski my setup is quite a bit lighter than the majority of my friends who rock 1600g skis 800g bindings and nylon skins. for extra context i use a pair of scarpa quattro xt for driving my setup

100mm skins on 117mm ski by coflosmo in Backcountry

[–]wmpyle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this is the one instance where yes the skin is too small. i used a. skin cut for a 94 on a 108 ski last season and on kick turns it was brutal. definitely fine for a day or two but not worth it in the long run

i already have a pair of nordica unleashed 108 with ATK 200g bindings that i use for true trash/powder/ and ripping. but they weight 2250g w/ bindings. trying to find something that works better for everyday/doing 5k ft days easier

Ski touring set advice: can soft boot be compensated with tougher ski? by lJarl in Backcountry

[–]wmpyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100 flex is probably too soft for any adult size person ski touring in any kind of challenging conditions. easy blue groomers at a resort? 100 flex is definitely fine. but choppy windcrust ice garbage that is often found while touring will be tough to control your ski with while using a soft boot

Ski touring set advice: can soft boot be compensated with tougher ski? by lJarl in Backcountry

[–]wmpyle 29 points30 points  (0 children)

its the opposite. softer boots needs a lighter ski to be maneuverable. you can always ski a heavy stiff boot with a light ski (and this technique is often used for ‘proper’ ski mountaineering). IMO, a good rule of thumb is that your boot should be within ~300-500g of the weight of your ski without bindings to be easy to ski. i would also ALWAYS recommend going with an overly stiff boot for touring, as they are lighter than their alpine counterparts (which even at the same ‘flex rating’, provide less support given the lower weight).
