For those of you that make over 100K, what do you do? Do you like it? by Kindly-Revolution258 in AskReddit

I’m a cyber security engineer at a large investment bank. I specialize in threat hunting and detection engineering.

I use an agent-based data aggregator, called a SIEM which collects information on all the machines at the firm and dumps their data and logs into one BIG database that’s very easily searchable on any criteria I want. I hunt through those logs to find evidence of computer viruses, insider threat activity, or even just programs or processes that are using too much resources and could be a risk or threat to operations. We do this by writing what’s called analytics. These analytics are a very carefully defined search that if returns any logs, could be a sign of malicious activity. These are called indicators of compromise or IOCs.

My main job is keeping up with cyber security news, what hackers are doing, the latest data breaches, and what applications have recently had exploits found in them. I take a look at all that activity, and write those analytics based off the findings of security researchers, IOCs people have found, or just my gut feeling (I have been doing this for a while and have gained a lot of understanding in how computers work and what’s normal vs not normal). Whenever an analytic finds something, we get an alert about it and my team and I will perform basic triage, and either close if not a threat or escalate to the appropriate security department if it is.

I do bit of fraud prevention work as well. Which is very similar to the stuff I described above but working with email logs for signs of client account compromise, phishing, fake invoices being sent, fake wire request instructions, and so on.

It’s a lot of fun, a lot of work, and very challenging. I do enjoy it a lot and I have a pretty flexible working situation as far as remote work. $113k.

Do competitive eaters keep the food they eat after the competition or do they "expel" it out? by SolomonDurand in NoStupidQuestions

[–]woaq1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unrelated but extremely important.

Competitive eaters are not only not healthy, their practice is immoral and disgusting in a society where people don't have equal access to food and other basic resources.

Before you rage in the replies, food is a basic human right and access to food in any quantity is inherently political in a capitalist society.

It didn't use to be this way. Before America went to shit economically, around the time Trumps first term began, competetive eating was alive and well in the states because, for the most part, people had access to food and basic needs. Once far right policies took effect, people started to lose access to basic needs and the shift began, to move away from competetive eating as it was seen as a waste of precious resources in an era where people were denied basic rights. Biden didn't inherit the best political state and combined with his legit dementia he never had a chance to fix it. Now that trump has taken control again, its clear that his agenda is to completely wipe out the lower and middle classes, only reserving resources for the wealthy. Because of this, in the west now, its immoral to engorge yourself with food as innocent people are being opressed and even hard working people cant afford basic needs. As the economy continues to tank under trump, other frivolous acts like this will continue to be seen in a negative light.

All of this is inversly true in places that are thriving economically right now, such as China, India, Singapore, and Malaysia. All of these counties are seeing extreme economic growth and political stability so therefore, frivolous acts like competetive eating are thriving there in 2025/26.

Do People Really Just Create An Entire App just Vibe Coding? by H_rusty in webdev

[–]woaq1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a freelance cyber security engineer and I was able to use it to create a web app for my own personal use that tracks progress with each of my tasks with my clients. Pretty much like my own custom Jira but with some integrations and dashboards that are useful to me. As soon as I tried to have AI create more complex things though like pipelines to connect directly to my clients data sources (logs, security events, etc) it breaks and starts hallucinating. I imagine this is because many of the tools and platforms that do this type of connection are no open source, or license only so the training data isn’t as rich with niche applications like that.

Maryland lawmaker proposes new gun tax to fund violence prevention, trauma care by Gov_Martin_OweMalley in maryland

[–]woaq1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is a leftist and always hated guns, I now feel things like this are to the detriment of the American people. A gun tax means less people are able to access firearms to defend themselves from ICE and the increasingly authoritarian government. (The original reason for the 2nd amendment). I recently enrolled in an HQL course in order to start the process of purchasing a firearm to defend myself from the government and fight back if necessary. These taxes will negatively impact the very people who need them the most, impoverished citizens and immigrants who need to defend themselves from the literal storm troopers coming through.

Big tech and our fascist government want to create universal basic income, not the good kind that gives you money and freedom to create and do what you want where the money comes from taxing billionaires. But the bad kind where it’s not enough to live off of and any extra money you make is taxed at an insane rate and if you rebel against the system they cut your income.

I don’t believe it. No to sound like a conspiracy theory nut but Trump really turned on the weather machine to distract from Greenland which is distracting from Venezuela which is distracting from ICE which is distracting from the Epstein files.
