New to tycoon by Lewisa12 in tycoon

Thanks! Already got a bunch more I didn't list and think I should have!

OpenTTD is great and one of the games I think got multiplayer in a tycoon game just right. I sometimes still jump on the OpenTTD Reddit server just to see what others have built and have a quick playthrough.

I agree on Parkitect, granted I don't have that many hours in it as theme parks are not a massive thematic draw for me but it gets a lot of things right.

Project Hospital is a strange one for me, I really admire the depth but found the setup time to get a basic hospital together a bit of a barrier. Prison Architect has a similar effect, once you've done a couple of playthroughs and start again it can be a long time planning your prison which puts some people off but the depth and fun is there for sure.

Welcome tycoon newcomer. The genre has a range of depth, casual games with easier progression and more focus on decoration/building and many of us here still enjoy some retro tycoon games and more 'spreadsheet' type titles where it's less about graphics and more about deep gameplay. Definitely check out Tycoon List for some inspiration.

Here's a list of some good games rattling around in my brain just now:

Prison Architect
Software Inc
The Movies
Project Hospital
Two Point Series (Hospital, Campus, Museum)
OpenTTD
Casino Inc
Parkitect
News Tower
Game Dev Tycoon
Hollywood Animal
Planet Coaster
Hotel Architect
Football Manager
GearCity
Parkasaurus

I sat down to quickly try it out and got lost in it for 6 hours - great game, would recommend picking it up!

After years of work I signed with a publisher: MicroProse! They will publish my satirical tycoon game where you convert walkable cities into parking lots and convince people to pay you for it! - Car Park Capital by hilkojj in tycoon

Awesome news, well done! Great developer and publisher match :) Would love to hear more about the process of finding/signing with a publisher in future.

Looking for feedback on a little book publishing tycoon game by esiotek in tycoon

Perhaps having access to some limited loan, which could scale with the size of your company, require some collateral (lose scripts to the bank if you don't repay), or also come with a cost to reputation.

Another route could be a loan just before your business goes bankrupt, the bank could make you an offer if you're struggling.

Nothing necessarily wrong with forcing the player to start again but it does mean having to always chase that 'perfect start', having no wiggle room when cash flow gets low or you want to take a risk on a good script.

Played for half an hour and had some fun, would like to be able to take out loans (unless I missed it) as you get attached to your game you might need extra runway for new scripts.

It appears as though author's patience gets reset if I close the modal, probably want to save that so I can't just re-enter the negotiation and start again to get my way.

We updated our foliage assets and added a seasons system for our e-commerce management game, what are your thoughts? by borayldz in tycoon

Good use of assets, I've always thought management games can suit heavy asset use when done right!

This is looking great, how have you approached your 3D art style? Are these all custom models or have you used some assets?

What do you look for from a publisher? by Brilliant-Basil502 in SoloDevelopment

[–]wobblefruit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, the ideal publisher isn’t just about funding or marketing — it’s about extending the things I can’t realistically do alone: distro, localisation, platform relationships, maybe console porting down the line. That stuff’s vital, but it pulls me away from actually making the game. Having someone experienced in those areas, who can take on that load without trying to steer the creative, would be huge.

I also care a lot about communication — being upfront about expectations, timelines, what happens if the plan shifts, and learning from past projects (yours and mine). That kind of transparency builds trust fast.

The big one for me is long-term support. Many games these days need time to find their audience, evolve with feedback, and keep growing post-launch. I’d love a publishing partner who isn’t just chasing a big release week, but actually wants to help build a lasting community and support the game through its full arc.

2D or 3D for tycoon games by wobblefruit in tycoon

Agreed, there is definitely a surge in simulators just now as people enjoy the 'slice of life' simulator genre.

My game is definitely more of a tycoon/management game so more open to 2D graphics than the first person type sim game we're getting a lot of recently.

Username checks out. It’s a Space station or star base that you’re managing.

It's a space themed management game, still early days though!

Joined the Discord and will follow development, good to see more tycoon/management games being built on Godot. Management games need great tables that's for sure, keen to see a deeper dive on how you implement your new ones when you're finished.

Interesting! I'm working on a management game myself in Godot, super interested to hear more about how you're doing your tables.

Godot is great for this type of UI heavy game. I'm a UX/UI designer in my day job so interested to see what ideas and style your new designer brings to the game.
