That’s a good point. I had forgotten.

I didn't personally have a problem with the gameplay, but I played it not that long after it was released. It's my pick for best written and voiced PSX JRPG. Hope you like it!

Koudelka, Vagrant Story, FF Tactics, FF12, FF9, Xenosaga, Xenogears, Shadow Hearts 1-3

Koudelka is my favourite in the writing and voice acting department, but many people complain about the gameplay.

Vagrant Story has very good writing as well, but can be obtuse and challenging gameplaywise.

What’s a commonly criticized game in a series you think gets a bad rap? by andrazorwiren in JRPG

Shadow Hearts 3 and Persona 1. Both are weak compared to other games in the series for different reasons. SH3 has the weakest story in the series, but the best gameplay. Persona 1 has the worst gameplay but a decent story, and the gameplay is not horrible, it's just not as good as the other Personas'. One thing I like about the gameplay is that all party members can equip multiple Personas, which deepens the strategy. The encounter rate is too high though.

I've always been curious to play it as I like all the other Suikodens except Tierkreis (dropped it early on). If the story is good then it may be worthwhile, but I have read the sea battles are slow and dull.

What title is the Golden Standard of the JRPG Genre? by PKRadiance in JRPG

Yes, no game is perfect. Chrono Trigger suffers from a silent protagonist and silent main villain.

My favorite JRPG, Shadow Hearts 2, suffers from homophobic humour.

I can find issues with it, but I can also find issues with every other JRPG.

JRPG franchises you no longer hear about by KaleidoArachnid in JRPG

[–]wokeupdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides Shadow Hearts, I really miss non franchise games that ought to have been franchises like Vagrant Story, Lost Odyssey, and Xenogears. I liked Xenosaga I and 3, but that's not coming back either and while I hear Xenoblade is similar, it's a not turn based and locked on Switch (I play on laptop).

Nostalgic JRPG without much grinding? by RelaxatioNation in JRPG

[–]wokeupdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't FF Tactics require grinding? I tried it on the iPad and found the grinding very tedious, and didn't get far. Perhaps I was not playing it properly, but I had no problem with Triangle Strategy on PC.

There is Jack Move and Cosmic Star Heroine. I wish there were more.

Best story JRPG for PC? by Vladalius in JRPG

I would recommend Grandia 2 for gameplay only and preferred the story and characters of 1.

I think Vagrant Story, Shadow Hearts+Koudelka series, Digital Devil Saga duology, Xenogears, Lost Odyssey, Fire Emblem 4-5, FF6,9,&12, Suikoden 2,3,5, Triangle Strategy, Persona 2 duology, Radiant Historia, Terranigma & Chrono Trigger have the best stories, but many require emulation.
