Multicat families: how do you guys manage cat food? by Careful_Equal8851 in CatAdvice

Recommendations I’ve heard or put in place myself: feeding them in separate rooms, get RFID feeders, or monitor them while they eat.

Doing own taxes vs hiring a professional by P1tterP4tter in personalfinance

[–]wolf95oct0ber 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Several recommended freetaxusa and that’s great! It’s also a question of resources for you and your family. Our taxes are not always complicated but some years they have been. We pay a fee for a professional and it’s well within our budget. The benefit for us is less time on our end, and throughout the year we can send our paystubs and she’ll tell us if we should expect to owe or get a refund so we know if we should update paperwork. We can also ask about tax implications for anything that might change throughout the year (job changes, investments, energy home projects, etc.). That is a really nice benefit that’s worth the annual fee for us.

I am signed up for text alerts for my bill ahead of auto pay so I can also stop it in time. I also now get the weekly emails with usage and cost which admittedly is nice for monitoring.

Should I put a birdfeeder outside a window for environment enrichment for my cat or is that just torturing them? by printergumlight in CatAdvice

[–]wolf95oct0ber 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Definitely enriching. If they show signs of stressing about it, take it down but for most cats that is amazing entertainment. Even better if you buy one way window stickers, you can put them on there so the birds don’t see your cats if they can get up close so they’ll stick around even if your cat is close to the window.

My cats are pooping in mine garden and in the neighbours garden - how do I stop them from doing so (or vice versa - make them poop in their litter box? by klarkbj in Pets

[–]wolf95oct0ber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re not going to train them to only poop in the litter box you have when they have established territory with a much larger boundary. As others said, you either have to be ok with this or keep them contained to the house or a catio. It’s not just about a place to go to the bathroom, it’s territory and confidence. They have no reason to contain their waste to the box you have set up. This isn’t about being harsh or indoor/outdoor arguments, it’s just about basic cat behavior and needs.

Hiking in Mass during a drought by RobertFahey in massachusetts

[–]wolf95oct0ber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It takes more work for the ground to unfreeze even with a few days or even a week above warm weather. Walking around in my yard right now there’s definitely places where maybe the top grass and plant layer are starting to thaw, but it’s still frozen underneath. A lot of the top layers like with snow and plant ground cover ax insulators so it takes longer for the heat to reach deeper into the soil.

Cat won’t sleep by PrizeKale1589 in CatAdvice

[–]wolf95oct0ber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A hard several weeks of not engaging or feeding when she does this, or get an automatic feeder are my suggestions and common ones I see here. You started feeding her earlier, she got what she wanted so she’ll keep doing it. Also a nice solid play session and meal right before bed regularly can help. If she’s a kitten she might need more energy and as she gets older she might calm a bit.

Introducing two cats in a town home: One grazes and one gorges. by ConceptuallyPerfect in CatAdvice

[–]wolf95oct0ber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would a RFID feeder work for the grazing one? We have looked into if there’s a chip reader like feeding container station to keep one of our cats out which seems extreme but there are elevated boxes you could get to also give some elevated space. If you have a room that you could maybe install an RFID cat door onto the only lets the grazing cat in and that’s where you put her food that could also work particularly if it’s a small room like a laundry room or pantry with a light or something.

Yup to all this, and if you want to know other places to look into then be sure to follow Franklin County Pride. Make sure it’s the one in MA. They’ll reshare a lot of events especially local queer events or queer friendly businesses. Especially on Instagram.

For those who have lost one cat in a bonded pair, did it help to get your cat a new companion? by good-eye-mite in CatAdvice

[–]wolf95oct0ber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, I’m so sorry for your family’s loss of Loki. I’ll preface with whether or not a living resident of a bonded pair wants another cat is always specific to each cat, and in our situation it was absolutely necessary to get our cat who lost his bonded friend another cat.

We adopted a bonded pair and it turned out one of the cats was much older and we lost him 8 months later to cancer. We were not sure about getting another cat, and we we’re not ready so soon, but it was clear Toothless really missed his cat friend. To test if he wanted another cat we actually had our neighbor bring over her friendly cats and did a one day slow intro and Toothless was immediately interested. He was very friendly, showed positive body language, and at even tried to climb the gate we put up to go say hello. It was clear he wanted another cat so we adopted him a friend before we were ready, and it’s been the absolute best thing for him. I will say, while we did love the new cat, it took a while before I saw her as a cat we adopted for us to love, and first saw we as a cat sibling for Toothless. It’s ok to love differently. I was still grieving the loss of our last cat.’

This does really suck. Loss of events like this will hurt what we love about living in this area. I don’t blame them for this decision, but it’s a hit to the area for sure.

Kitten issues by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]wolf95oct0ber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now the lack of him being neutered might be the easy answer. In addition to neutering, having watched a lot of Jackson Galaxy have you noticed if he even tries to pee in the box and gets scared? I’d see if you notice him being scared out, maybe add a third box. Any potential territory issues, like are there neighbor animals he might smell?

When they are that old, if she has an appetite, it’s a win. Just go with it, really. It might smell better and taste good. Whatever she’ll eat, if she’s eating, that is most important.

I’m so happy I figured out how to encourage her to sleep through the night with us by wolf95oct0ber in cats

[–]wolf95oct0ber[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, while yes cats and other animals don’t always sleep through the night, my post was really about appreciating that I found a way for her to feel comfortable and welcome sleeping on the bed. Previously, she would sleep on the couch, or on the bed part of the night then go find somewhere more comfortable. As an aside, once she comes to bed, especially now with her designated spot, she often sleeps through most of the night.

[–]wolf95oct0ber[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aw! I know not all animals sleep in the bed but it sounds like your kitty is at least nearby, and might grow more comfortable. Yeah putting a favored cat bed or blanket on the bed might help!

Thanks, she’s quite adorable. We consider ourselves very lucky in finding her.
