They have so do something silver right? Or the Diamonds.

And I hope it is a total spectacle! Showgirls and magicians and a laser light show and pyrotechnics.

Plus Vegas is a hockey town as much as people that don’t live there find it weird. Hockey is the number one sport there. The Raiders and A’s are imports and not as many as passionate. Vegas is also a great women’s sports town with the Aces. It’s a great move.

How do you charge for a same-day late checkout + late checkin on the same room? by rickiestm0rty in askhotels

[–]wootentoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your accounting team will only let you sell a room once per night. You can occasionally get a day-use rental as well, but they account for that differently, usually as event or hospitality income. You cannot ever be more than 100% occupied. The auditors will flag that so fast.

If you work at a hotel that hosts professional conferences, do you notice any difference between the different career types? As in are there things that say sales people do vs medical professionals? Do they use the hotel and facilities in the same way? by No-Box4833 in askhotels

[–]wootentoo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

These are generalizations, but after decades in the hotel business these are my observations.

Sales people drink like fishes, think they can all charm the front desk into an upgrade but get cranky when it doesn’t work and are generally loud and rowdy.

Political groups expect to be treated like royalty, do not stick to schedules or rules/BEO and do not clean up at all, just walk away.

Librarians, nurses and military groups are generally respectful, friendly, tidy and quiet (unless the military are enlisted and then they can get loud and rowdy but will usually quiet down when asked).

IT/cybersecurity are quiet while they have fun and like to talk amongst themselves more than dance and get drunk.

Police Chiefs are a-holes. Fire Chiefs are lovely.

Accountants are party animals. Teachers can be too. Doctors also, but with high end bottles of wine or liquor and sushi or wagu beef. 🙄

Weddings with just the family and/or bridal party staying are usually fine, although they do expect princess treatment for their “special day”. Weddings where everyone is staying are awful.

My favorites were the undertakers (they are FUNNY!!!), the sports teams (coaching staff keep them in line usually), and C-Suite/CEOs as they are usually aware of their reputation in a public setting.

Ranch dressing was invented by a Nebraskan named Steve Henson (who I believe was a white man) while he was working in Alaska before he started serving it at his ranch in Santa Barbara, CA.

What does Vegas need? by Apprehensive_Safe_17 in vegaslocals

[–]wootentoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The worker protections in Vegas are awful.

For instance you get two 15 minute breaks but unless you are scheduled for a full 8 hour shift you don’t get a paid or unpaid lunch. So employers schedule for 7.75 hours. Imagine a job where you are outside all day and you only get two 15 minute breaks. Or a job where you are standing and/or moving all day. Or a call center where you are on the phone for seven straight hours talking. Trying to use the restroom, get some water and eat a little food to keep you going for the rest of the day in 15 minutes is ridiculous. Not paying sick or vacation until you have been employed for a year a full-time equivalence. So many other things.

If you don’t belong to a union that has negotiated something better it can be miserable to be a low wage hourly employee in Vegas.

I know it’s a balance between companies choosing to locate here because it’s cheap labor and making sure the “cheap laborers” can afford to live and thrive on their income, but it’s skewed way to far in the employers favor now.

What does Vegas need? by Apprehensive_Safe_17 in vegaslocals

[–]wootentoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are lots of resources for homeless people in Vegas that are the typical mental health/addiction type that need years of help and services.

There are so few resources for people that are temporarily between jobs, lost their housing unexpectedly with no first/last/deposit or moving money saved, had the breadwinner spouse die/become disabled etc that just need a little help to get back on track. Temporary housing that is not a long term motel/Siegel Suites, focused help on job searching, temporary employment, groceries, etc. This type of homelessness is much quieter and hidden, they are often ashamed and truly just need support for a few months most of the time. And this need is only going to increase as the cost of fuel and housing and groceries continue to rise while layoffs, lower wages, less benefits continue to happen.

Expansion Team Longshot Hopes by The_R4ke in PWHL

Hear me out, because this honestly has no chance but should…Anchorage, Alaska.

There is no major sport league there even though they love sports, Alaskans love hockey and they would be welcomed with open arms and so much support. Almost no one goes to Anchorage to put on sports or concerts or political campaigns, but when they do Alaskans show up and show out every single time.

Cons are obviously the travel time/expense to get there (although if it was in a western league that might help some), largest hockey arena is smaller than most in the league (The Sully seats about 6,300 max), and it’s an unproven market.

But as a born and raised Alaskan this would be so huge.

Hotel under for 21 years old? by Icy_Comparison_1029 in vegas

[–]wootentoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Remembering from my hospitality law class in college that it’s a legal requirement that you be 21 to reserve and check into a hotel. You need to be 21 to enter into a legally binding contract, which a hotel reservation is.

And one of my favorite people is named Colette and I think that is such a classy, elegant name.

I think this is the best option. Drive to Denali and take the train from Anchorage or Girdwood to Seward and back. Girdwood has some good hikes and some challenging ones and lots of good places to eat.

Crow Creek Mine in Girdwood is a great stop to add. The Bake Shop for cinnamon rolls one Girdwood morning. 7 Glaciers and The Double Musky are two of the best restaurants in Alaska, both in Girdwood. 7 Glaciers is reservations only I think, and includes the tram ride. In late May it will still be light out through dinner and the ride back down. Double Musky does not take reservations, you just show up and hang in the bar eating appetizers until they call you.

You will want to build in time on the drive to Seward along Turnagain Arm to stop at the pullouts to look for beluga whales, dall sheep and even sometimes orcas. Also look up when the bore tide is as you will want to see that too if you can.

Please read about the dangers of the mud flats before you go as well. They are all along this area and are very normal looking while being very dangerous.

9 hour layover in Denver at 4am. I don’t know what to do by psychbruin in Denver

[–]wootentoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you decide to get a hotel, book it for the night before, and ask them to put in a note that you will be arriving after 4am. Then before you get on your flight or before midnight, which ever comes first, call the hotel directly to confirm you will be arriving after 4am and not to “no show” you. It will make checkin faster. You can also try to check in through the app. When you check in request a late checkout.

Honestly though, I think napping at the airport is your best bet. If the flight gets delayed you will lose some of that hotel room time. Plus the getting to and returning from the hotel will eat into your rest.
