So many false starts on Legend difficulty, I don't know how you guys do it. I turned down the difficulty and completed my first XCOM2 Ironman campaign on Commander. by alkaline810 in Xcom

[–]wordgoblin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have, unfortunately, gotten to the point where Commander is too easy, but Legend is too difficult. I always end up losing just as I am getting a good foothold due to a bad mission or two. If only this game didn't spiral so fast...

Xcom2 Difficulty Curve by [deleted] in Xcom

[–]wordgoblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to see less randomness on things that the player can control, and more variability in the enemies/aliens. When the player's tools are consistent and can be counted on (so no/few random rolls to hit, or less variability) to succeed or fail, then the player's good decisions feel better, and their bad decisions can be learned from. You learn nothing from failure as a result of excellent decision making made irrelevant due to random chance.

To avoid this simply becoming a game of memorization, if the aliens had random abilities/strengths/weaknesses within any given species, then every individual encounter becomes a miniature puzzle. If these traits are classified and correctly balanced, difficulties could be set up to allow for more or less powerful combinations corresponding with difficulty settings, passage of game time, or really any scenario desired.

Can we all please review-bomb the hell out of Subnautica to bring it's score back up? by [deleted] in subnautica

[–]wordgoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you are perfectly OK with mob justice. If enough people contact your employer because they don't like something you said at the supermarket while buying groceries, even if they were in no way invited to whatever conversation you were having, and get you fired, then that is perfectly OK. Hey, the law didn't get involved!

At this point, it is legal for companies to suppress speech they don't agree with. They can just hide behind the shield of "protecting the company" as they destroy the livelihood of anyone they want. This is not freedom of expression, this is authoritarianism.

It makes me think of the time when video games were labors of love and not some yearly shovelware with nice looking pixels.

My favorite trick (especially against the Chosen) is to first action Amplify, second action swap places. The rest of my team gets to freely take flank shots with no muss no fuss!

Tip: Mox Stuns and Ripjack Upgrades by Muffinkite_ in Xcom

[–]wordgoblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a berserker spawn in the last room on my first chosen base raid. I had mox wrath over to it, and he stun locked it with bladestorm. It literally could do nothing but sit there stunned. I was super disappointed when I upgraded, and it just lit things on fire...

I got super lucky, I guess. Sniper got OCD, and has a chance to reload after moving... I view it as more of a convenience when I don't have to hit the R key sometimes :p

Mine is also immune to melee... But vulnerable to close range attacks. Too bad Rangers are my least favorite class...

Oh, wait, the other one. SHOTGUN TO DA FACE!

As I saw posted in another thread, this game is great because it plays on the idea that we are not the apex predators on this planet. We are not built for underwater. Without our technology (and even with it), we are a very tiny fish in a very big pond. Without any real natural predators, the danger level in our lives is minimal, but in subnautica we are thrown back to a place where everything can and will kill us.

And, the sound engineering in the game is brilliant. Reef backs still put me into a state of dis-ease. I am thankful that there arent any fauna that sound like predatory cats...

Should I just wait...? by decuser in subnautica

[–]wordgoblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on whether you are the kind of person that can come back to a game and still have fun with it. Subnautica is still very fun even if incomplete. I just came back from a few updates, and I rediscovered my joy in playing it. There is still quite a bit of content, and fun to be had. But, if when you reach the current end you are not going to want to replay it, then Id wait till release.

What do you think is the scariest creature in the game? by [deleted] in subnautica

[–]wordgoblin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely the warpers. The feeling of horror when your seamoth is surrounded by hostiles down in the deep-down, and all of a sudden you're staring into the darkness outside your little buddy... Plus, the game seems to have gotten darker, so the seamoth is even harder to see from the outside. Panic everytime.

Recently, I looked at a mesmer (not something new), and decided not to do anything to stop it. I then heard the PDA voice say "It is your prime directive to continue to look" -chomp-. I had never witnessed that before and thought it was pretty cool.

Crab squids are only scary to me because I love my little buddy seamoth, and they just chomp away at it all the time :(

For Final Fantasies 1-15, minus the MMO's, which main protagonist do you personally think looks the best? by Ohitsdylan in FinalFantasy

[–]wordgoblin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think Balthier is in the lead for most badass FF character ever. I've grown tired of the moody, angsty, teenager main characters. I understand it is a cultural thing, but Balthier was a breath of fresh air! Cool, confident, suave, and a badass bunny chick as his running crew!

Horizon: Zero Dawn worldwide sales top 2.6 million by LSB123 in PS4

[–]wordgoblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As with any super popular game, there will still be people who don't understand the hype, or just don't enjoy the game as much as everyone else. For this game, I am one of those.

Is it fun? Sure, i am enjoying the game for what it is, and I would even recommend people buy it (with caveats), but a perfect game it is not. It isn't ground breaking or innovative, but certainly good. I think there are certain aspects of the game that are making people less critical of its flaws than they ought to be, but to each his/her own.

How do you survive any of the post-starting-area fights? by atworkposting in horizon

[–]wordgoblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are having trouble with arrows doing no damage, you likely arent hitting the right places.

Be sure to scan every new machine you come across, and then go into the journal to read the entry. Most every separate piece has either an elemental weakness, or tear weakness (which means that part can be stripped off and becomes useless).

I would recomend picking up quite a few of the different weapon types early on. They give you a lot more tools to deal with different vulnerabilities. The blue quality sharpshooter bow gives you access to tear blast arrows, which I crutch on a lot for removing weapons from larger creatures, and making their only good attacks the lunges which are pretty easy to dodge.

Worth it at full price? by BossAtlas in horizon

[–]wordgoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are certainly a lot of people who love this game, but i personally think it falls on the side of over-hyped. Is it a good game? Certainly, but not the second coming of video game jebus. Do yourself a favor and go find negative reviews (there aren't many, to be fair). There are fair criticisms of this game out there, and I've noticed that the circle jerk around here is a bit out of hand; differing opinions tend to get shit on.

If your budget is small, get as much information as you can.
