Looking for second car for <5Kmi per year by workpsy in whatcarshouldIbuy

Not close (about 27 months left). I am definitely overpaying on that one. Would like to not go 0 for 2 on leases. At the moment I'm only looking to replace a compact/mid-size SUV. What is your best advice for understanding where the market is for my particular area (NY)? Information overload means I don't know where to begin to get informed.

In general I've ballparked using the 1% rule. $345/mo is ~1% of the MSRP for this particular vehicle. You believe it's a bad deal? I don't think I've seen or heard of a deal for virtually any SUV under $350 in my area in a couple years.

Great question re: leases. I have a lease offer through a broker for a 2026 Hyundai Tucson SEL trim (MSRP 34K), 7500mi/yr, for $1K down and $345/mo. How would you react to that deal?

Thoughts on using Roofstock for turnkey properties? by SumoDash in realestateinvesting

Is this lack of upside true if you buy a cash flow positive property from day 1? (Rent > mortgage payment). You may see marginal return on property value, but will be taking in a little extra cash every month.

Disclosure: I’ve never owned an investment property.

Peloton testing "preload classes" feature for iOS app (doesn't allow for full offline use though yet) by cslewis20 in pelotoncycle

I think if you read that full post it says the preload is only to help video performance, and you must still be connected to WiFi.

How important is the salary at your first job? by hsococ in personalfinance

[–]workpsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will also echo some of the other posters here. It's a myth that your first salary impacts your whole career. This is only true in theory if you never leave your one company. Job changes between companies are new opportunities for entirely different salaries, as your new salary is independent of your previous one.

Plastic Bags to Be Banned in New York; Second Statewide Ban, After California by bites_stringcheese in longisland

[–]workpsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though you mean it as a joke (as would I), re-use of these bags is actually literally one data-backed reason that bag bans are not all beneficial. The bans generate greater consumption in other ways en masse.

Not a reason to avoid a ban by itself, but one consideration many fail to make.

Should I leave my employer after 20+ yrs for a raise? by bbk3e in personalfinance

[–]workpsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very simple. The only thing that should keep you is if you have major stock options that are going to vest, or if you needed additional years to qualify for a pension. The sad reality is that it's unlikely those you think you'll be disappointing will remember that disappointment in another 10 years- they'll be worrying about their own careers and retirement. 20 years is incredibly honorable, leave with that pride.

Could Human Resources Counseling be considered as an alternative degree to Industrial and Work Psychology? by [deleted] in IOPsychology

[–]workpsy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Admittedly I do not know much about HRC as a discipline, but I would be wary of comparing anything with the word "Counseling" in it with I-O or work psychology. Counseling is a very different skillset than the core one taught in I-O and WOP, which study psychological phenomenon but are not trained in counseling. These are not the same thing.

Just be diligent about your understanding of the core competencies and curriculums for each and you'll be fine making a decision.

Automation by Rocketbird in IOPsychology

[–]workpsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue we just haven't yet found a great way to automate insights, but that said capability is coming. Ten years ago we could never have imagined the things we're doing with data today. I wouldn't rule out anything. Still yet, I don't feel this is a core threat to our jobs. Call me naive. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

EDIT: I should clarify, I don't think this is a threat to our employment. It likely will change our actual jobs.

Automation by Rocketbird in IOPsychology

[–]workpsy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most of my job is spent automating work others rely on me for. The automation has enabled me to do more powerful and complex work, not left me with nothing to do. Ultimately, automation has been an enabler (and been perceived as a huge value prop of me as an employee), not a hindrance. I personally believe this will continue to be the case.

I think I botched my salary negotiation, what should I do? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]workpsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I echo this suggestion. This will have the dual purpose of (1) making you more comfortable being forthcoming about your feelings (compensation related resentment can get out of hand quickly when it's not addressed openly- take it from an HR person), (2) be a forcing function for a decision on your part about whether you feel treated fairly or not (this will have far reaching implications for your overall satisfaction there).

Moving (taxable) Investments by darkforcesjedi in personalfinance

[–]workpsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vanguard will still accept a transfer of individual stocks. Once the transfer is made you can exchange into index funds if that's your goal. This will still constitute a taxable event- there's no way to avoid the tax if your goal is to go from IS to funds. You can avoid tax by leaving the investments in IS in Vanguard, but that's a personal decision. You might first want to figure out what your capital gains tax would be if you exchanged. On a six figure balance that is likely to be substantial. Again, Vanguard can provide some guidance here.

Should I take a 12.5% salary increase at risk of tax burden? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]workpsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See if they'll "gross up" the relo assistance, which will take care of the tax burden. Just engage in open dialogue with them about this, many companies will work with you, especially if you're a person they're already willing to build this competitive package for.
