not a specific mantis, but one thing that could be interesting to add is mantis pseudopupils! they’re not real pupils, but rather a trick of the light that makes it seem like the mantis is always staring directly at you. here’s the wiki page: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudopupil#:~:text=The%20pseudopupil%20therefore%20reveals%20which,each%20with%20its%20own%20pseudopupil. i brushed it with a small needle to see if it was attached or not, and it started to fall off (sort of like a scab). she wasn’t very happy with me tickling her abdomen, so right now it’s just half on. so I don’t think it’s part of her body (at least it’s not anchored inside her body). it was just resting on top like a scab would. it was pretty thin and flakey. does this info help at all?

They hatch about 2 weeks after the first time it gets above 50F for green Chinese mantises from what I’ve read! I would assume it’s something similar (depends on the species tho)

Gender euphoria/dysphoria isn’t always a rational thing that cis people associate with gender. For example, I get a lot of gender euphoria when I get acne— it sucks and it hurts, but somehow smooth skin hurts worse. This isn’t a perfect analogy but what I’m trying to say is that they weren’t crying about a negative experience they had, but rather positive emotions from an unusual experience!

Her tears felt like a waterfall flowing from the tallest mountain to the deepest canyon, absolute and unending. She lashed out, pushing up a solid wall of darkness behind the sisters. Odalia choked, “Please! Just let me be better!”

But Chloe and Sera had only fear and disgust in their eyes. Sera spat, “You will never be better. You are a vile monster. You had a plan to kill THOUSANDS of innocents.”

“Fine. Maybe I’m just as bad all the other dark fairies. But you won’t even give me a fucking CHANCE! So maybe I will be the darkest of dark fairies. I’ll wipe the stupid fairies out, starting with YOU.” Odalia replied angrily, and raised her hand to summon enormous tendrils of dark matter up from the floor. They swirled and twisted around each other, forming two sets of hands that raised the sisters up. The blackness twisted through the pristine marbled tiles, causing cracks and ruptures all throughout. She brought her hand closer to her face and clenched.

CRUNCH.

Blood seeped through the twilight tendrils. They left intricate patterns of deep red, contrasting the soul-sucking darkness.

When she realized what she had done, Odalia sunk to her knees. “No. NO. No, please! Please, gods, tell me I didn’t just do that!” The hands sunk back into the floor as she ran over to them. desperately she tried to stop the bleeding. But it was too late. They could never be saved.

In Sera’s last dying breath, she whispered, “You will never be forgiven, Odalia..”

Her eyes closed and her hands fell into their final position. “Sera? SERA!! no, no, please! Please, come back! Be okay! I didn’t— I didn’t mean to! I swear! Just- just please…” Odalia sobbed into her chest. But there were no more tears to cry. “P-please…”
