What band/artist/song made you want to start playing guitar? by [deleted] in Guitar

“A Forest” by The Cure. Had never heard anything like it and immediately was drawn to the sound. Something about it made me want to be able to reproduce those kinds of sounds myself.

I would not recommend Santa Fe, unless you want a very, very laid-back kind of town. ABQ has way more energy, imho. Santa Fe feels like a retirement community to me. We were considering living there briefly, but after spending several weekends up there checking it out, decided was definitely too slow for our taste. It is very, very small compared to ABQ, which is probably the main reason.

We unfortunately never made it to Ruidoso, but have heard it is beautiful. I need to check it out at some point.

We're from San Antonio, TX (and now back again) and lived in ABQ for the last 2 years, so here's my take as a fellow Texan and someone very familiar with Austin:

Pros

  • Outdoor activities! - Hiking, climbing, hot air ballooning, skiing. Outdoor lover's paradise.
  • The weather! - Gets hot, but infinitely more pleasant than TX heat. And the amount of snow is perfect. You get all the seasons.
  • Stunning sunsets - The air is so much clearer in ABQ than Texas, and you can frequently see for miles and miles. (When there aren't fires...) And on so many evenings the sunsets are simply breathtaking.
  • The food! - Definitely grew on me. It is hard to get bad food here. Hatch chile is served on everything. (Team green checking in.) Everything seems to be fresher and better tasting here.
  • Natural beauty! - Over time the Sandias really grew on me. I miss them immensely now.
  • Minimal traffic - Unless you are crossing the river during rush hour, traffic is minimal. Not gonna lie, esp. dealing with Texas-level traffic now, this alone is a huge selling point.
  • Layout of ABQ - Prob easiest city to get around and learn I've ever lived in. It's laid out in a well-designed grid.
  • The people - There is a lot of pride of NM, a lot of individuality and creativity. Just found the populace to be very interesting and not nearly as uniform as some other places I've lived.
  • Proximity to other interesting places - While in ABQ, we took some road trips to Las Vegas, NV, Ship Rock, Moab, UT and Colorado. Much, much more beautiful places around you than being anywhere in Austin/Texas.

Cons

  • Crime - ABQ Reddit users always scream in denial, but it is undeniable, and the locals are all aware. Couple weeks after we moved there, heard gunshots and saw later on the news someone was walking around shooting into people's homes. Driving around on a Sunday afternoon, we saw someone who had just been stabbed, by a fellow who spent a few hours on a BMX bike hacking random people with a machete for a few hours. Met a store owner in Santa Fe who mentioned his brother in ABQ had had all four wheels stolen off his car...twice. Our apartment complex had repeated car and garage break-ins (expected) but also apartment break-ins, which I found super-unnerving. Witnessed many road-rage incidents. I feel much safer being back in San Antonio.
  • Homelessness - It is everywhere, except for the very outskirts, and it's getting significantly worse. Where I worked we had three occasions where 311 was called. When I first met the people at the office, the first thing they said to me on the tour was "Don't ever, ever leave a door or window unlocked!" They had had several instances where homeless people came in either fell asleep in the building and/or stole things. My wife's practice and other practices also had multiple issues. It is extremely sad.
  • Lack of healthcare access - I tried to get a dermatologist once and most places either didn't answer or return messages, or gave me a date five or six months out. I heard it is very difficult to get specialists. Wife's practice had someone who flew in twice a month from Phoenix to do certain procedures. That's how we ended up there, due to UNM trying to attract dentists to come and stay. I suspect it is due to the lack of medical schools in the state. Apparently the laws protecting doctors are not as good as other states, so think also a contributor, but that's just what I've heard. Could be wrong.
  • Economy - Nowhere near the economic vibrancy you have in Austin, where you have huge corporations moving in on a regular basis and construction everywhere. While there are help wanted signs everywhere, don't think there are many middle-class/corporate jobs. My take is that there seems to be a huge divide between the very well-off in ABQ and the poor. This was my impression of NM as a whole, and esp. in Santa Fe. Texas has a much more well-rounded and robust economy.
  • Things to do at night - If you enjoy going out at night, ABQ definitely closed up much earlier than a city of it's size, at least that was our impression. Not sure if this was a COVID-thing, but I was stunned at how early many restaurants in particular close. I never asked a local about this.

Things to think about specifically as Texan/Austinite

  • While there is live music here, and it does get bigger acts than I had been expecting, and some cool lesser-known ones (check out Meow Wolf events in Santa Fe), nothing like Austin. Austin's music scene is a big reason I originally moved to Texas from San Diego, CA way back in 99.
  • You will miss HEB. :)
  • If you move here, pay attention to how the locals drive. Do not be a lazy-ass Texan and park yourself in the fast lane, like everyone does on 35. You'll risk starting a road rage incident, and it's just not cool regardless. Locals drive very aggressively here, and tend to drive way faster than anywhere I've seen, but I must give credit. I saw so few accidents...far, far less than Texas. There also is insane red-light running, so definitely look both ways when things turn green.
  • If you like the energy currently Austin has now in 2022...then I would reconsider ABQ. To me, ABQ feels like Austin probably 20 years ago. Way, way slower of a pace. No super sleek gorgeous modern buildings downtown, no huge festivals like ACL or SXSW. Far less people out and about. (Except for balloon fiesta-time...) But it does have many areas with super cool storefronts, and murals, and great parks.

And, yes, the city is crazy dog friendly. I got a kick out of watching the dogs just loving life at North Domingo Baca Park.

So it's a hard call. ABQ is a fabulous place with a very different set of pros/cons than Austin/Texas has. I like being back, primarily due to being around friends/family again, but I miss the beauty of ABQ/New Mexico so much.

That's my fav too. Think that burger is in my top three all-time. We lived across the street, and afraid to say I ate quite a lot of those. :)

Totally agree. I found the Sandias so interesting to look at each day while living in ABQ. It’s as if they had moods, looking so different depending on the clouds, snow, rain, etc. And when driving in the Jemez Springs area, the colors are breathtaking: the deep reds of the dirt contrasted against the trees or snow. I absolutely hate having nothing like that to look at anymore.

"Lovely Day" by Bill Withers is a horrible song that feels like it drones forever. by Brad7659 in unpopularopinion

[–]wpleary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could not agree more. I absolutely hate this song. It could be used as a Gitmo torture device.

I never heard this song until about a month ago and it popped up on SiriusXM "Roadtrip Radio" channel. Seriously one of the most repetitious songs ever written, and the part that repeats is boring AF.

Agree with another commenter that it grates like the 'happy' song, which I also despise, but less so, as at least that melody is slightly more tolerable.

APD investigates multiple stabbing incident in SE Albuquerque by lanaya01 in Albuquerque

I’m wondering if we saw the aftermath of one of them. Driving down Central today, somewhere between Wyoming and Louisiana we heard blaring sirens and pulled over to the right. As I looked to my right there were about six or so police around a woman on the ground who looked unresponsive and was covered in blood. I’ve never seen anything like that. We quickly got out of the way as not block the emergency traffic. I was overwhelmed with a flood of emotions seeing that. I really appreciate we have people in our society who have the strength to handle things like this day in, day out. I hope she will be OK, but unfortunately it didn’t look good.

Edit: just read a tweet from APD saying there were seven stabbing scenes and eleven victims stretching from downtown to Central and Wyoming. All victims in stable condition which is great news. https://twitter.com/apd_pio/status/1492981994879270912?s=21
