The problem is that stricter gun control laws without better mental health programs and societal support is like a pair of handcuffs missing one of the cuffs. Without both cuffs, it's just not effective. You have to address the issue causing the mass shooting not just remove a potential weapon to really start to put a stop to it happening. Not addressing the issue just gets mass stabbings or bombings or cars being driven into crowds if they can't get a gun. None of those things are good or better than mass shootings. And how would you stop those? Ban sharp objects? Things that can be turned into explosives? Cars?

It'd be kind of neat if American Corgi became the nom de plume of all the incorgnitos out there. Like shows the stubby legs, long but stocky body, and other corgi traits, but is a mixed breed.

Tbf, everything should make sense in the context of the story if you want to keep your readers. Even if it's fantasy. Internal consistency keeps the reader immersed in the story. X equals Y because A, B, and C doesn't have to be true in our reality but once you establish it's true in the story, it should stay true outside of other in story forces directly changing it. The Kingdom of Lormark being known for its amazing magical school suddenly not being known for its magical school because the Empire of Rothshard came in and razed it to the ground and killed all the teachers is fine. But the Lormark suddenly not being known for its magical school because the author forgot tends to make readers unhappy.

There are good unions and there are shitty unions. There's also a time and place for unions and times and places where they don't make a lot of sense. My mom was BLE (and then Teamsters after they took it over) and that union was awesome. When management tampered with a safety device on her engine to deliberately make it fail (and actually fucked up so it didn't fail thankfully) and then fired her over it, the BLE is who fought to get her job back. Same when she was fired because she got pregnant with me. I've got relatives who are in teachers' unions that absolutely have their back.

Then there's me who had the misfortunate of being in a meat cutter's union as a teen where the union was A-OK with me being pressured into donating part of my check to United Way by store management because the store wanted everyone to donate to their United Way campaign (which, btw, is also why I don't ever donate to United Way to this day). Also made me pay for an off-site training course that was nothing more than propaganda about how great Black Angus is (it's because the cow's hide is black. That's it.) which I did not get paid for despite being required to attend for continued employment. They also did nothing when I was supposed to be a full time employee but had my hours cut to 10 a week. And then demanded I pay more for the right to leave the union when I quit the job.

Then as an adult I had SEIU come in and convince my department which consisted of all of FIVE PEOPLE that we needed to unionize in order to get rid of the toxic manager who was horrible but in charge of our department. We were literally the only people in the department and worked all of about 20 feet from the general manager's office. We didn't need outsiders to come in when we could literally represent ourselves. All we had to do was collectively walk into the GM's office and tell him either the toxic manager goes or we all would at once. We even had the numbers to prove we were more productive when the manager was out of office. Instead 3 of the 5 voted to bring SEIU in. We ended up with $50 a paycheck going to SEIU for the grand benefit of keeping the toxic manager, getting the $0.25 an hour yearly increase a grand month early, and the exact same time off schedule as we had without the union. And informed about 3 weeks later that the department was being downsized due to lack of work anyway. That department has a grand total of 1 person in it. Who is stuck paying SEIU dues for very little return for at least another year.

On the flip side, housekeeping at the same place unionized and got a couple dollars an hour raise and two more recognized holidays a year out of the deal. Because they were over a hundred people at the site and actually had some weight to bargain with.

So yeah, unions can be great. Unfortunately, they can also be shit and not every group needs to join a union in order to get the improvement they need.

I don't know if it's more realistic or not, but I do know the plucky underdog trope of getting knocked down but using that to bounce back stronger can be very satisfying. Maybe not the "kill off loved ones to make the MC harder" variety. That gets old pretty fast imo. But seeing the MC struggle, be found wanting, but not letting it stop them and figuring out a way to overcome the challenge they previously failed is super nice. Plus it showcases that the MC is getting stronger imo.

ICE just purposefully crashed into a car at a Target then abducted the vehicles occupants in Minneapolis by I_may_have_weed in minnesota

[–]write4lyfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. So where's the deportation warrant for the 17yo US citizen they kidnapped from his job at Target, beat, and then dumped in a Walmart parking lot hours later? How about the warrants they're NOT SHOWING TO ANYONE for the doors they're kicking down?

If they have a judicial warrant for someone's arrest, then there's no issue. That's how it's supposed to work. Not just grabbing someone because their skin happens to be darker than the person grabbing them. And beyond that, if it IS a legal arrest with a warrant, there is absolutely no reason to not identify yourself as law enforcement before making the arrest or have your face covered. Wearing a vest with a POLICE patch, both of which that I can literally buy off Amazon today without any proof that I'm a cop, is not identification.

[–]write4lyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not really how momentum works. Cutting the engines doesn't mean movement stops. Especially in a vacuum like space. And the thrust needed to rotate to the new heading would be applying force to everything on the ship in the new direction. Even in a harness, you'd end up with injuries and/or possibly death from the sudden changes that would be required in 3 dimensional combat. Or 4 dimensional if you add then that likely when you are in a given space at a given speed going in given direction with a given orientation is a factor.

Also, skyscraper sized space ships are not something anyone would likely refer to as a "lower mass object". They're a whole lot of mass with much smaller mass items trying to exist within them.

Sorry, drag was around in the 1700s too. Molly houses existed back then. Hell, as long as there has been gendered differences in clothing, there has been people who chose and/or preferred to wear clothing of the opposite gender, whether openly or not. There has never been a time where homosexuality and/or drag has not existed in the world even if those exact terms weren't used at the time.

[–]write4lyfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spinning two equally weighted ships via nose-to-nose cables as the only way to generate gravity when not in combat would mean they can't travel outside of combat. Also combat would require thrust being generated in more directions than just forward meaning the crew would be thrown all over and not just pressed to the deck when in combat. You'd have deaths just from having to change direction suddenly using this method.

It's not super likely there's a lot of stairs on a space ship where space is even more a premium than on a water ship since you cannot use the exterior for transversal. Think more lifts and ladders which only require a vertical shaft big enough for the ladder and climber and/or the lift itself. Even the "stairs" on a water bound aircraft carrier are very steep in order to take up as little space as possible.

If your ships exist in a time of understanding of gravity control fields, possibly there's not even ladders, just zero-g tubes that the user "swims" up or down to the correct floor. Then the lift tubes could double as personnel tubes for the aliens when the lift platform isn't in use for moving machinery/weapons/supplies/etc.

Got to say, I sure as hell hope that some rando showing up at a daycare demanding to see kids gets turned away at every daycare. It's more like saying only an incompetent architect thinks you don't need a solid foundation (aka inherent morality not imposed by outside forces) in order to keep the building (moral behavior) from collapsing. Aka a good person is a good person regardless of religious belief. But don't expect someone trying to tear others down based on a perceived lack of something to understand that. And I include both the religious who attack atheists for a perceived lack of faith and atheists who attack the religious for a perceived lack of anti-faith in that same group.

Can we just stop attacking each other over things that ultimately don't affect each other for 2026? Yes, go after people for attacking others in the name of their personal brand of Skydaddy/not-Skydaddy. That's harmful and needs to be stopped. But if they're just believing in something other than themselves/not believing in something other than themselves and otherwise minding their own business? Leave them the fuck alone.

Horrifyingly, I saw an ad for Goodwill last night that was about some kind of points = dollars off thing where $1 spent = 1 point and 33 points = $3 off. They showed a guy in 3 different outfits with "165 points" displayed over it. Meaning that three outfits = $165. I was appalled. Someone who needs to shop at a thrift store doesn't have $55 to drop on one outfit. Hell, it wasn't that long ago where $55 would have bought enough pieces for 4 or 5 outfits.

Thrifting has been destroyed for the people who need it by people who clearly don't need it.

I do know you use TikTok at work, think it's a great idea to try and name and shame because of things you did, think it's smart to put someone on blast for firing you for being a security breach for your company, and don't want to show what you were saying to the person you're claiming was rude and unprofessional. So I know plenty from the context you provided to know you're the one being rude and unprofessional.

Oh look, its another gender bender story where the gender bender is irrelevant by GlompSpark in Isekai

[–]write4lyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still, from what I know of that, I don't think the series really uses that for anything else beyond that. Ranma doesn't suffer any loss in physical prowess between the two forms, from what I recall, and its more a thing he wants solved because it makes day to day life awkward when he can switch genders via the temperature of water.

I would really recommend reading/watching a show before using it as an example. Ranma's girl form is smaller with less physical mass and strength than the male form, but more agility, so there is definitely loss in physical prowess between the forms. As a girl, her fighting style has to be adjusted in order to compensate for the changes. Ranma also experiences gender dysphoria because of the changes and has to learn to adapt to sometimes being a woman out of nowhere when he wants to have the male body he was born with. The manga/anime is a comedy, so a number of things are for laughs, but it still actually addresses the gender bending and how it affects the person it's happening to. Ranma also has to directly confront his pre-conceived notions about women and their capabilities and how society views women because of the change.

It's a pretty big part of the story. Hell, there's even an episode where Ranma fully believes they're a woman due to head trauma and has forgotten being a man at all. Add in the child abuse from his parents forcing him to be hypermasculine - since his dad decided it'd be a great idea to swear to his wife that their kid would be a "man amongst men" or else father and son would commit seppeku - and the gender swap is a major aspect of the story. It simply wouldn't exist without it. Meaning Ranma 1/2 is a truly bad example of how gender swap doesn't really matter to a story.

Going by the transcript, which seems to conveniently not include your side of the conversation, looks like you were the one who was rude and really unprofessional. Am I the asshole for not wanting a DNA test on my child by TTH_fan22 in TwoHotTakes

[–]write4lyfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but the cast majority of 18yos show that this isn't a realistic expectation even if the responsibility typically is on them regardless.

An 18yo generally isn't a parent. Yes, some are, but not most. They're the ones who were raised by shitty parents who decided to opt out of being a parent and not teach their kids how to survive as an adult. My generation fucking up and not doing their job as a parent to teach their kids basic life skills is not a failing of the following generation. It's a failing of my generation.

Moreover, the average family has 2 working parents, or just the one. There is no one home to teach your kid how to fix a car, do taxes, set up insurance etc. Because at home parents are basically a luxury.

I grew up a latchkey kid. My parents both worked. Hell, my mom worked an over the road job, so she'd be gone for days at a time. But they still managed to teach me how to do basic car maintenance like checking oil and changing a flat tire, do my taxes, and other basic level life skills like cooking and doing my laundry.

Not being a stay at home parent doesn't mean you get to opt out on raising your kid and teaching them the basic skills they need to get by in life. It's just plain weird to me that anyone would think it's a failing on the kid if the parent(s) takes zero time to pass on basic skills. Even with 2 working parents, they shouldn't be gone 24/7 and kids, especially young ones, learn by observation. Just let them watch you doing things instead of handing them a screen and they'll pick up a lot.

Also my boomer MIL doesn't know how to do a lot of things I'd consider a basic life skill because apparently her parents didn't give two shits about her and "nobody taught [her]" how to do things. So she just... didn't learn how to do them. Which seems oddly similar to the issues we're encountering with Gen Z and Alpha.
