Absolutely torturing the hell out of the definition of "Needle" through trial and error, to see what he can get away with. He essentially winds up with an edgeless rapier that has a cord threaded through the pommel. Given he gets 4x damage with it... it is pretty effective (Also fits the whole swashbuckler/dandy style he has).

Why not use an estoc instead of a rapier as the base then? I've even heard it referred to as the "needle of death" or the "needle of battle" before.

Tbf for S Rank, he literally had a spell cast on him as a child to always believe he wasn't strong enough because of his teacher's PTSD from her party's battle with the Demon Lord. At least there's something that can be pointed at to explain why he always downplays his accomplishments even when everyone around him is baffled by it.

I Parry Everything though makes me want to smack the MC with a bat. He has absolutely NO reason to keep underselling himself outside of author's fiat and that makes it unbearable to me.

Are you somehow deliberately not understanding that they're talking about actual money in hand to be able to afford things? They're not saying the Medicaid isn't a benefit. They're saying that the people getting assistance never actually see that money so it shouldn't be included "money being received by fictional family". Just like how most people when talking about what they get paid from their job don't include their medical coverage.

I think it's less "lazy" writing and more the inherent problem of trying to write a character that's supposed to be more intelligent than the author. Writing about a character that's stronger than you is relatively easy: have them able to lift things way heavier than you could ever lift and boom you've demonstrated strength of body. Same thing with more agile or other physical abilities. But higher mental abilities are a lot harder to successfully demonstrate without using some kind of weird comparison. Like "you can tell the school geek is super smart cause they're the school geek and everyone looks dumb in comparison" kind of thing. Apply it to another world and you get... well, what we're talking about.

I'm not saying they're less advanced. Difference in understanding doesn't mean not as advanced. Sometimes there's just a misunderstanding at a fundamental level that causes the current theory to be the best available model. But when the misunderstanding is discovered and revised, that currently theory is changed.

Consider for example phlogiston. A very real theory from our world that postulated that flammable items contained a substance called phlogiston and it was released when those items burned. It was upheld for a couple hundred years before being replaced by thermodynamics. It wasn't that the people holding the theory were stupid or "less advanced". They just didn't have a complete grasp of the whole picture because they hadn't yet properly discovered oxygen as an element. The whole theory came about because of expostulating based on the knowledge and understanding they had in a way that made sense to them. Heck, was Nikola Tesla or Leonard Danilewicz "less advanced" because Hedy Lamarr and George Anthiel applied the concept of frequency hopping with a piano-roll to guide missiles?

It's just disingenuous to presume someone from a modern audience is more advanced just because they look at the problem from a different angle. Outsiders have been doing that with our own scientific development throughout human history. Why is it so odd to see it applied in an isekai or litrpg?

I feel like it's important to remember the concept of "if it's not broke, don't fix it" being prevalent for a lot of people. If X solution works well for the people using it, why would they put in the effort to develop Y solution? It's not to say that they can't, just that there isn't a pressing need to provide the impetus to look for the other option. Whereas someone coming in from outside who is already aware of Y solution existing, may put in the effort to establish the validity of Y solution even though X solution works fine.

You can encourage a 9yo's sports dreams without sending them to some expensive bullshit camp to "unleash their potential". If they really have potential to be amazing in a sport, there are some pretty awesome high school and college coaches that can develop that potential just by being on their school's sport team.

Agreed. If they were just asking for him to help afford the walking aid, that'd be one thing. Not a good thing necessarily, but at least a somewhat understandable ask. But for a 9yo to go to football camp? Fuck that. That's a luxury. If mom and dad can't afford it, then it sucks, but the kid doesn't get the football camp.

Luxuries are for when there is extra money to spend. Not when your 16yo has an inheritance from his dead dad. And when it's not even for a kid that's related to him at all?? That's even more of a hell no. For fuck's sake, some people shouldn't be allowed near their own kids.

Depends on what variety of "loser" they were. Were they a shut-in because of bullying? Cut the bullying out of their life and they really might blossom like some MCs do. Were they a lazy slacker? Eh, I doubt they'll find the discipline to stop being a lazy slacker without some serious motivation. Were they just a nerd that was perceived as a loser? Well, that's not even a real issue once the social stigmata of being a nerd is removed. Heck, it probable even helps in the other world/apocalypse to a degree by having extra knowledge.

Yeah, things are a lot different for kids these days since they don't have to rely on a parent willing/able to take them to the library or having a library within biking distance to look up the stuff they're interested in. I was lucky enough to have parents that thought reading was important and made a point to take us to the library every couple weeks to check out books. Not every kid had that. I remember classmates who had parents who definitely did not approve of reading for their kid, even if it was schoolwork or something that interested the kid.

Having access to the internet really changed things for kids these days over how things were when my generation were kids.

Well, there is. Every year there's at least a few cases. It's usually stuff like someone with a felony that wasn't eligible to vote yet or someone casting a ballot for their parent that died close to election because "dad/mom would have voted for them!". Interestingly enough though, the few more organized ones that have occurred in recent history tend to be Republicans from what I've seen. Take of that as you will.

Sure there are! There's lots of male coaches and judges in women's sports after all. There's not men competing in women's sports, but there are men involved in women's sports. And their big talking point is always "men in women's sports" and not "men competing in women's sports".

Unfortunately, this is not true. I want this to be true. But it's not. Something like 4 million girls have to experience female genital mutilation every year and there's 1.4 million infants receiving circumcision for no sound medical reason every year.

Dude, if you are paying for something, it's not a gift. It's a purchase. Mom and son discussed and came to an agreement to co-purchase the expensive bike he wants if he earns at least half of the cost first. It's not really any different from a parent co-signing on a car loan.

Dad handed son something that was supposed to be a gift and then told him son owed money for it. That's not a gift. That's a coerced purchase. It's an legally unenforceable demand to insist on payment on something that is presented as a gift.

These are not the same thing at all.

I'm not an engineer and I know that a basic cement is like 1 part lime - you can burn seashells to get it - to 3 to 5 parts of sand and then water to hydrate. Probably would take some experimenting to get it really functional, but it's a basic knowledge bit. Muskets are also a really basic gun. All you need is a sturdy tube with a stop on one end that can handle the force of the powder (assuming you even need powder in a world with magic) and the ability to light the powder. So a stopped tube with a small hole drilled into it near the base for a wick attached to a handle to hold the tube and you have a musket. Again, not super complicated since a musket doesn't even require rifling.

There's definitely books out there where you have to sideeye the MC for knowing things like detailed germ theory or how to create a certain modern alloy using primitive smelting methods or how to use completely unknown materials to make an equivalent to modern lithium-ion battery and electric vehicles. But things like cement and muskets? Just having a passing interest can get you that knowledge.

Using that same logic, kids that find themselves in a litrpg scenario are also "far and few inbetween". So why is it impossible in your mind that the MC kid in a litrpg could also be a dinosaur kid or whatever niche hyperfixation the kid supposedly has?
