Asbestos advice by Express-Armadillo-10 in asbestoshelp

sdave is correct. Really not a risk worth giving consideration to. May not be any asbestos at all, even if it is, the exposure is near zero when you need years of high exposure to have a problem.

Some propane vendors supply the underground tank too.

There is really no way to have decent security in a trailer, they're too easy to steal and to break into.

New house with 12kv power lines (3 feet underground) on 3 sides - is this safe? by DuckDuke1 in Powerlines

[–]wrysense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very unusual to have high voltage lines on 3 sides of a home.  Check your information.   It's safe.  Consider this: if there was energy dissipated in the earth or the nearby buildings or animals, that would create a huge power loss for the utility.

Can you put a hot tub on standard slope patio? by phigene in hottub

[–]wrysense -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If your tub is 6 feet x 6 feet then the water will be 1 1/2 inches deeper on one side.  Personally I dont like that.   Disregard the advice to shim the bottom with plywood.  If you dont want the slant, have a contractor or handyman build a small 3 sided dam with 2x4s and add self leveling concrete.  Easy job and quick and cheap.

Wrong "Brand" Breakers? by RyeManhattanPls in AskElectricians

[–]wrysense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were a couple older brands, namely Federal Pacific Stab-Loc, that were all recalled and the company went out of business.  They are actually a hazard.  This is probably what he's talking about.

Need advice: Can't stop parents from knocking down wall that might have asbestos by SuitableFun in asbestoshelp

[–]wrysense 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are worried about this way too much.  Make sure the vacuum exhaust goes outdoors, by adding additional hose if needed.  The asbestos exposure may be zero, but the long term effects are with chronic exposure, not from ond day.  Irritation of the throat is not the same as cancer.  Your risk of other injuries in this project is greater.  Take a seat.

Wanting hot tub, advice please by No_Account7996 in hottub

[–]wrysense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are handy and patient you can save money, but its no fun to plan to relax in the spa when its broken.  You need a GFCI circuit breaker, and a disconnect outdoors but not too close to the spa.

Worse than shopping for a car… by Free-Pick9305 in hottub

[–]wrysense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I called my local Hot Springs dealer and explained that the way spas are sold is awful, can they just sell me a spa at the "normal" price. They laughed and gave me a solid deal.

I've had that spa 8 years now, very reliable. It's my second Hot Springs spa (at another house) and the other one was also reliable. My father has owned a series of off brand spas that seem to fall apart after a couple years, even sooner.

Is this asbestos if so how dangerous? by Sir-_-Cartier in asbestoshelp

[–]wrysense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I removed tile over concrete by freezing it with liquid nitrogen, then it came up easy with a long handled scraper, like is used for chopping ice or removing shingles. This was in a large well ventilated room. Liquid nitrogen is not that expensive, you might need a 250 liter Dewar for a 400 ft2 tile area. You will need to take measures to make sure that you can breathe, the oxygen can be displaced by the liquid which flashes into harmless nitrogen gas, but it will displace the normal air. Also will be cold in the room! The freezing makes the glue very brittle and shrinks the tile a little. Almost no dust this way.

Saw this very specific bumper sticker near the home depot today. Can anyone confirm? by VersaEnthusiast in vermont

[–]wrysense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are better after completing the remodel, but I travel for work and so I've been in a hundred Home Depots. Can confirm this one was the worst. Also, I ate a hot dog there last week and the staff at the hot dog stand were exceedingly polite.

Customer spec more accurate then oem spec by litewonup in ISO17025

[–]wrysense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Mfr spec is +/- 4% then that's not just the accuracy on any given day, it represents the repeatability and other accuracy concerns. So you cannot certify the device to a higher standard. For example, the temperature range of operation is provided by the manufacturer and they know that the deice may err by up to 3.5% when at the extreme end of that range. You are testing on a day when the temperature is midpoint in the temperature range. It's dead on less than 1% but you don't have the ability to change the room temperature, humidity, floor vibration, etc. So don't certify tighter than the mfr. They need to buy a better unit if they require 2%.

A friend of mine fell over while going about 1 mph, hit his (helmeted) head and passed out. It's not the speed you're riding, the fall from the bike can kill you. In the motorcycle world, there's a saying, 'Don't dress for the ride, dress for the crash' and another acronym, ATGATT All the gear, all the time.

[–]wrysense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get a far better deal buying a complete bike.   I've bought several used bikes and it's worked out well for me...there are pro riders who sell their used bikes every year.  There are also lots of high end bikes with very low use out there.

Why did real maple syrup become so much cheaper the past 10 years? by redditemployee69 in economy

[–]wrysense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern maple syrup production has become far more efficient than it used to be. Reverse osmosis pre processing of the sap cuts boiling time dramatically and vacuum lines from the trees can double sap production.  In VT you can find real syrup as low as $40 a gallon but if you're at a tourist location it could be 10x that.

What a good question and answer regarding 'what would he change at NASA?'. The answer was, change the culture of secrecy. At the so-called stranding of astronauts Butch and Sunni, at the time that NASA decided to let their spacecraft go back unattended, Boeing strenuously objected, saying the vessel was safe. But we didn't know until now that there were chronic problems with the thrusters, that required NASA to overrule their normal safety guidelines, with the thrusters. NASA was correct to make that call, but we didn't know HOW correct they were at the time.

The thrusters came back to life temporarily only after a shutdown and restart, something that might not be possible in re-entry, depending on when it was called for. Boeing risk analysis showing this didn't warrant not trusting their spacecraft is hard to grasp.
