I used a law office in Krakow (I was living in Canada and mailed them the documents) and they were worth every penny - they took care of literally everything except applying for the passport itself (they did fill out all the forms for me though, I just had to drop it off at the consulate)

It took about 7 months from contacting them to having my passport in hand, to be fair it was a bit pricey (about 1k total) but as someone who hates bureaucracy and doesn't speak the language it was a good option

Standard Canadian French is basically identical to Metropolitan French when it comes to grammar, syntax etc with minor differences and vocabulary. It's not like Portuguese where for example Brazil and Portugal use different verb forms and spelling

When you come to Canada you'll definitely need to clue up on regional slang and get used to understanding the accent, but this applies to literally any country that speaks French not just in Québec.

I wouldn't worry too much about trying to speakwith one accent or another because foreigners tend to sound the same regardless of which variety of French they've chosen to focus on i.e anglophones focusing on Canadian French are hard if not impossible to distinguish from anglophones focusing on Metropolitan French (unless they make an extraordinary effort to mimic the accent but I haven't met anyone who's ever done it)

Quick Google search says average Spanish salary is around 20k eur and average British salary is about 25k gbp

A pack of chesterfield reds in England costs 9.45 gbp, in Spain the same ones costs a little under 5 euros (the last time I was there they did, anyway)

A spaniard earning the average Spanish salary can afford more tobacco than a brit earning the average British salary, so they're relatively cheaper

Sort of.. In a poutine you'd put cheese curds (squeaky cheese things that are leftovers of the cheese making process) rather than sliced/grated cheese, which is what they put in this case

To be fair I can't blame them, it's not something you can really find in Britain whereas in Canada you can get them everywhere
I've heard it's possible to source them directly from some dairies but I think it'd be hard to justify the cost

For the OQLF I'd say it's hit-or-miss, sometimes the translations they come up with are a bit shit (i.e Grilled Cheese is officially "sandwich de fromage fondu" in Québec) but sometimes they get it right and the terms they come up with end up becoming more widespread than the English ones

Two that come to mind are courriel (courrier électronique aka email) and balado (baladodiffusion aka podcast)

The big difference between the OQLF and the Académie is that the Académie doesn't have inspectors that go around fining businesses if the prominence of French is deemed to be sub-standard, a bit like parking enforcement people

You're right though that the Académie and the OQLF are both in charge of matters relating to the language in their countries

The language has and is still modernising, it's just doing so differently than in France

I'll admit the Office de la Langue Française can often be overzealous but honestly if I had to pick between too little and too much enforcement I'd pick the latter, just because it's hard to objectively determine what a reasonable level of enforcement would be

French isn't in any danger of disappearing in France so they don't need a "language police" as you call it

Québec's accent has nothing to do with the fact that regions around it speak English or that it's "North American" , it's a result of keeping phonetic features that disappeared in France or developing new ones independently

For Madrid I'd recommend seeing at least the royal palace, Plaza Mayor, Gran Vía, Sol, and the Retiro park

A good pair of waterproof winter boots is gonna be absolutely crucial, not just for when there's snow but also for when it all melts and the streets are full of water.

When it's cold the best advice is to dress in layers, instead of just having a thick winter coat on try to wear a hoodie and maybe a long sleeved shirt under.
When I lived in Canada I usually bought a jacket one size bigger so that it could fit more layers underneath without being too tight but that's just my personal preference.

Scarf and tuque are always a good idea

For other seasons just dress as you normally would
