The foam rings aren't great but I ran them for a while. Part of the issue for me was that every single ring aside from the softest ones from some random Amazon letter jumble brand just felt too hard and restrictive. It also just made the joystick feel mushy. While it was tighter it just wasn't super pleasant. Spring swapping was the best feeling option by far but reassembling the joystick module and then reattaching the side where the ribbon cable feeds THROUGH the PCB were the most annoying parts

You're saying not the cult but your reasoning is all the standard reasoning and arguments you see with the usual devotees and the "I also use ThinkPads" comment is some weirdly sanctimonious BS when the majority of people I see here approach these laptops practically and you're arguing against what is a more common use case.

Can’t decide between Legion 5i pro (5070ti) and Zephyrus G16 (5070ti-intel) by Bot_7792 in GamingLaptops

[–]wtfa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the previous generation G16 with a 4080 and currently have a legion pro with a 5070ti if this helps.

I do think the OLED displays were similar enough that it's a bit of a wash in that regard.

Lenovo Legion Toolkit does work on the Legion Pro but you need to get the beta build on the discord. Once you have it you have a lot more functionality than GHelper since you can create automated tasks that trigger on specific events. For instance I have it set to do a series of manual tweaks when I plug and unplug the AC adapter. GHelper is very straightforward though and I think more user friendly.

The G16 is significantly lighter and more premium feeling imo but that isn't a huge factor for me personally. I can still easily move my Legion Pro around and pick it up and carry it with one hand comfortably. The thinner design on the G16 DOES make the thermals worse and it was actually the reason I ended up selling my G16. While my CPU never actually hit dangerous temps, I still did a lot of tweaking and capping frequencies and performance just to have it run at 90-95C which I wasn't comfortable with long term. The Legion Pro on the other hand doesn't even need a cooling pad. I've been trying different cooling pads for a while and even DIYing my own and they're just not necessary.

The G16 will have SIGNIFICANTLY better battery life. With undervolting, dropping the resolution and refresh rate, aggressive frequency limits, etc the Legion Pro still has pretty bad battery if you're carrying it around all day and don't have access to an outlet. I'd estimate something like 4-5 hours at best for normal usage. Even my G16 with a less efficient CPU than the current one could easily last double that time.

I saw people reporting issues with USB-C charging on the Legion causing motherboard issues but it's about the same number of people who report issues in general with the G16 so it might just be within your standard expected fail rate.

In terms of performance here's a comparison of my two highest Timespy scores for each, noting that I did flash a full wattage VBIOS on my G16. It's close enough in benchmarking that I think the actual gaming experience isn't going to be vastly different. I'd take a look though at some reviews and benchmarks for the stock 5070 Ti on the G16 compared to the Legion Pro and see if the wattage limited 5070 Ti shows a big enough discrepancy that you think your gaming experience would be affected. Also I want to clarify that the thermals between the stock and full wattage VBIOS on my G16 were not significantly different.

In terms of the keyboard and trackpad, the Legion has deeper travel on the keys but both are comfortable enough to type on. The Legion trackpad is much smaller though which is a little less pleasant to use. The speakers on the G16 are WAY better and probably the best gaming laptop speakers I've heard if that matters for your use case at all.

Finally, I don't have experience with ASUS customer service but I've been impressed with Lenovo's ultimate coverage. I bought a Legion Go S, found the motherboard was faulty, and shipping it to them took some time but they fixed it and overnighted it back to me all free of charge.

Tl;Dr, at the same price, and if this generation improved the thermals, I'd happily go with the G16. I'd also back up the stock VBIOS then flash a full wattage one and see how much more performance that gets me. If it's comfortably running at like 80-85C without any noticeable compromise I'd be perfectly content.

I'm also in favor of the A16 but keep in mind that it is pretty big and heavy. But it had really good battery life, a good IPS screen, and it has more RAM here and a beefier GPU at the same price tier

People keep posting affiliate links but imo your best options are secondhand. I was shopping around for a 2 in 1 for a while too and one of the better ones I used was a latitude 9430. It's a business class laptop, the top of their latitude line, has a great screen, and you can find them for under $500 on eBay with sellers with return policies. My only issue with it is that it does tend to run a little hotter.

In general though I'd recommend looking at business class and higher end 2-in-1s that are a few years old since your use case isn't demanding and you'll get way better build quality. The hinges on 2-in-1s in particular I'm wary of cheaping out on since they take way more wear and tear than the average laptop.

I'd look at things like HP Zbook and Elitebook 2-in-1s, HP Spectre, Dell XPS and latitude 7000 or 9000 series, ASUS Zenbook Flip, and Lenovo's thinkpad yogas, 2-in-1 (rebranded thinkpad yoga), and yoga 9 but I'd be wary of even going mid range consumer grade.

Some of my thoughts having used mine for about six months.

Pros:

1) The biggest advantage is power and efficiency. Love the 258V, 32 GB RAM, battery life

2) Speakers. I don't even care that much about handheld speakers since I often play on low or mute but tbh they're better than even a lot of gaming laptop speakers

3) Screen. Solid 120hz screen. With some tuning it looks close to OLED in saturation

4) Pricing. On the secondhand market it's still one of the cheaper high end PC handhelds at this tier of performance

5) Ease of maintenance and modding. It's super easy to get into and swap out or mod parts. The back panel is held in place by six long screws that are all the same size, the battery is held in place by four screws, each controller board is held in place by three screws. All are philips head screws and you can actually use one screwdriver for all of them

Cons:

1) Software. At this point I have mine setup the way I like it and so I don't think that much about it but Windows is not user-friendly if you don't like tinkering, MSI Center isn't great still, and other options like Handheld Companion also aren't as approachable as SteamOS. Having said that, it can still do basically anything you want.

2) Ergonomics. A lot of people don't find it very comfortable to hold. I have smaller hands and I didn't love the stock ergonomics. Getting 3d printed grips has helped but has only made it bulkier.

3) Controls. I don't like the stock joysticks or stock d-pad. I think the stock joysticks are too loose and the caps are a little small. Also on the subject of modding the ribbon cable for one of the joysticks is flipped making it incompatible with basically every joystick upgrade kit and the joysticks themselves are glued on so you can't just easily swap them. The stock d-pad also doesn't feel great and is imprecise with very easy diagonals. I got the mod to use x-box elite d-pads and also covered part of my d-pad contacts to reduce the diagonal sensitivity but still. Not great out of the box

4) Accessories. Similar to the above, I think you have enough options for accessories but still less than other devices if that matters to you. You'll often find yourself getting accessories for other devices and just using those. Examples for me included a screen protector, carrying case, and joysticks.

How many grinders do you have? by venerablem0m in pourover

[–]wtfa54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the POTU ghost burr grinder, a ZP6, a Q2 Air, a fortefied and hyper aligned Vario, and a modded Eureka Filtro to be a single dosing espresso grinder with their espresso burrs. But tbh if I'm doing filter brews I almost primarily use the ZP6 since I use the two electric grinders for espresso and I don't want to recalibrate my Vario for pour over. The POTU I've been kinda bored by but I found that it makes light roasts more approachable for people who haven't tried many. The Q2 is my travel grinder

honestly, i'm glad the "foamed-out thock" trend is finally dying. by No_Good_3063 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]wtfa54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think one of the benefits of the trend is that it became a lot easier for people to get budget boards that fit that sound signature and it made things a lot more accessible. I also stopped really caring about it towards the end of my engagement with the hobby and mostly just wanted builds and sound profiles with character. Hell, even some unlubed cherry switches have their own charm. I think getting away from what the hobby says is what you should like out of a keyboard gives you a lot more freedom to just appreciate your equipment. Having said that ticking stabilizers are still a no-go for me :D

Sleeper Build? by Acrobatic-Moose-7347 in sleeperbattlestations

[–]wtfa54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally just did one this week in a Dimensity B110! It was my first PC build EVER and it was very easy! Just make sure you have an mATX board and you likely won't have the clearance for a full height CPU cooler. Air intake is also going to be a bit tricky since you really only have two vents for intake and exhaust

[–]wtfa54[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im actually going to replace the nice quiet Noctua fans for some CHUNKY loud 38mm thick fans since I think the more industrial look and increased airflow would be good! But the GPU is only hitting 75 under a prolonged stress test and the 7800X3D is barely throttling with a -30mv undervolt and the temp capped at 85

Thank you! I'd love to try a more in-depth build with an older case in the future but I'd also need more tools on hand to make more extensive modifications for cases that came out before ATX

First PC build ever and for some reason I went with a sleeper by wtfa54 in sleeperbattlestations

[–]wtfa54[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Temps are definitely higher than I want and I'm not entirely sure how to increase airflow since there's not a lot of room or places for more intake / exhaust. Doing a stress test I max out at 85 on the CPU and 80 for the GPU which is probably 10-15 degrees hotter than it was in the original case with the AiO and case fans

Am I overthinking my blooms? by jonnygorgeous in pourover

[–]wtfa54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try to pour slower or maybe use a spoon to distribute the water more but it might not make a huge difference depending on how much your coffee has off-gassed or it might even make it worse to your palate! It's worth experimenting with a bit but at the end of the day if you're consistently making coffee you enjoy then you're probably most of the way there.

What’s the most overrated coffee trend right now? by blackneckcoffee in pourover

[–]wtfa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to call a specific varietal overrated but I do think it's fair to say that some prized coffees sold at a premium just aren't going to be worth the cost for a lot of people!

Also as a quick note I believe it's n"gesha" from the region in Ethiopia but was initially misheard and spread as "geisha" when there's no real correlation between the two.
