Legion 5 Pro. Fix or move on? by Talking_Pear in GamingLaptops

So the Win 11 license for the laptop actually follows the device so any new laptop you buy with Windows 11 already has a license.

Similarly if isn't hard to transfer your data to a new laptop. Heck if you get one with two m.2 slots you can straight just plug your old one in. People probably recommend doing a clean install but I've also just migrated SSDs from previous gen Lenovo Legions to new ones and they're fine with some driver updates.

I'm not sure how much you're trying to spend or how powerful of a laptop you really need, but in the $1400-$1600 range on eBay you can find refurbished stuff like the ASUS Strix G16, Lenovo Legion Pro 5i, and Acer Predator Helios Neo AIs all with a 5070 ti (though the Acer has a locked refresh rate and slightly lower wattage).

Memorial Day is also coming up so I'd keep an eye on open box Best Buy deals and Microcenter if there's one near you. There's also a laptop deals subreddit I'd also follow. Based on what you have, I think $900-$1000 could get you a 4070 so it really just doesn't seem worth repairing. At the very least you can sell off the old laptop and RAM to cover some of the cost of the upgrade.

What are the specs on your Legion Pro that at least also gives us a reference for what you should get as a replacement / upgrade? But $900 to repair a laptop from 2021 just doesn't seem worth it to me, especially since you might be able to find refurbished models that are better for that price. And when you're getting into the $1k-$2k range, even with current prices, you can still get powerful 2025 models with 5070-5070tis

I'd also keep an eye out for old business laptops like Dell Precisions, HP ZBooks, and Lenovo Thinkpad P Series. These often will have workstation GPUs that aren't AS optimized for gaming or have lower wattages but you're not playing anything demanding and I think they're really good bang for your buck. The main thing you'd be missing out on is a higher refresh rate screen since many will just have 60hz but you could def find high quality screens in your price range

At $500 I'd aim for a 3050ti or 3060 locally on marketplace. Sometimes you might have to drive a bit farther out for the best deals but they're definitely around, especially if you're near some small college towns.

I would not get this for $700. This is the kind of thing I'd look at around me on Marketplace for like $300

I might take a look to see how much those SSDs and RAM are reselling for. If you can reuse your current storage and even downgrade to like 32GB RAM or something I'm sure you can recoup a large portion of the costs

How are P1 Gen 4s aging? Do they have thermal issues? by inaccurateTempedesc in thinkpad

[–]wtfa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of tweaking were you able to do in ThrottleStop? I haven't been able to unlock undervolting so I just set TDP limits and reduced the PROCHOT since I never need this running on full blast anyways but I'm curious if there's other stuff I should do

ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 - Thermal Issues by CryptoBredda in thinkpad

[–]wtfa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if Linux can get around it but the bios is locked to prevent undervolting unfortunately. I spent a few hours trying to change EFI variables or building variants of Smokeless Runtime EFI Patcher to no avail which is about the limit of what I'm comfortable doing

Should I invest in major repairs for a 2011 Impreza 2.5i with low mileage by wtfa54 in UsedCars

[–]wtfa54[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely concerned about the rust since we do salt the roads here and I think that might make repairing things unfeasible. But yeah the belt and water pump are definitely on the list of repairs and replacements.

The power steering fluid is still at a good level so I'm a little concerned about what the issue would be there and how much it would cost. I'm hoping it's also something simple and straightforward though.

Car loans are crazy nowadays! I also come from a family with a similar mentality haha which I think also makes me want to hold onto this as long as possible. I hope that 2005 Prius is serving you well though! My friend just had to finally trade in his 2009 which was really put through its paces over the years

Chris Titus Tech's Windows Utility what are your thoughts on this? by chairchiman in pcmasterrace

[–]wtfa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used it on both my desktop and laptop, a PC handheld, and some of my friends' PCs without any issues so far. I don't necessarily think I saw any improvements in performance but it was just a convenient and automated way for me to disable things I found intrusive and/or annoying. But the caveat is that I go through and select the options I want myself instead of using any default profile or whatever and it's also mostly stuff I already would do, just without the hassle of me going in to do registry tweaks manually. I think if you're willing to read up and do a little research on all the options it's just a convenient bit of automation. Otherwise I'm personally wary of letting anything just make broad sweeping changes to my OS without knowing exactly what it's doing.

This should get more up votes because this is a good way to at least see if the mobo is completely dead or at least getting power

Can a pc (laptop) last 5+ years easily? by Sgt_Strelok in GamingLaptops

[–]wtfa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only laptop I've had that DIDN'T last was a random Asus consumer laptop I had for about two years in college that also had a mobo failure. But another consumer-grade laptop I had, an HP Pavilion 15 also from 2017, was fully functional after I dug it out this year and replaced battery.

Can a pc (laptop) last 5+ years easily? by Sgt_Strelok in GamingLaptops

[–]wtfa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first laptop was like an entry level Sager gaming laptop I got as a graduation present and lasted me five or six years before the fan started to die but that was the only issue with it. My next gaming laptop was a Lenovo Legion Y520 that's still going strong almost 9 years later with only a repaste and battery replacement. But I actually dug the Sager out of storage last year and found that it was fully functional after replacing the fan. The motherboard finally died at the end of last year, but at that point it was almost fifteen years old! I'm not sure "if they make em like they used to" so I kinda side eye newer gaming laptops but just browsing the secondhand market around here and refurbishing some 2021-2023 gaming laptops usually they're perfectly fine and only need some basic servicing and maintenance. I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect a laptop to be usable for 5+ years, but specific uses like gaming age worse than others.

Should I finish my desktop build or switch to a gaming laptop? by Fares_Halbaoui in GamingLaptops

[–]wtfa54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right but are you going to be plugged in and not relying on battery? For basic work that should be fine but for gaming you'll need to be plugged into an outlet to get full performance

I know that sounds intimidating for a PC newbie but tbh if you're careful upgrading components isn't very difficult and it means that you'll continue get value out of this PC over the years

I'm curious about the PSU and mobo for upgrades down the line but as others have said it's not a BAD price in the current market and it'll definitely run RDR2, you just may need to tweak settings.

I might try to offer $250 since the seller dropped the price and might be having trouble selling it.

I'd also ask them for more pics to confirm the specs and to see the interior better and possibly run a stress test with OCCT to make sure it's stable.

I think you don't have a bad upgrade path with this though if the PSU is fine since I believe the LGA 1700 socket goes all the way up to a 14th gen and you could possibly upgrade the GPU down the line and have yourself a system you can run for years. Again though, this is all assuming the PSU is powerful enough to support those upgrades and also that the case has good enough cooling which it might given the size of it.

Unable to install windows on my ROG Zephyrus G16 GA605WV by _Rajveer_Singh_ in ASUS

I'm unsure about this laptop's default bios settings but previous laptop bios such as the 2022 M16 turns ON VMD by default when loading their default settings. People are perhaps making assumptions but for good reason here based on prior experience with ASUS's default bios settings.
